Just A Daoist Who Occasionally Kicks Ass-Chapter 25: The Undead Knight
Chapter 25: The Undead Knight
Head Constable Wang gave a bitter smile. “I was just as shocked the first time I read this letter.”
Li Yanchu’s reaction stemmed from the content of the letter itself.
The monk who had died in the mountains was likely Master Huaixin, and the one who had written to him was a man known as the Wuling Wanderer.
In his letter, Wuling Wanderer claimed to have discovered the whereabouts of an Elixir of Immortality, said to be hidden within Wei City and set to surface in the coming days. He had invited Master Huaixin to Wei City to assist him.
But unexpectedly, before the monk even reached the city, he was attacked and torn in half by some unknown beast, meeting a violent end. And now, the whereabouts of this Wuling Wanderer were also unknown.
“Daoist Master Yanchu, what do you think we should do about this?” Head Constable Wang asked. freewebnσvel.cѳm
Li Yanchu shook his head. “This concerns human lives, Head Constable Wang, why ask me?”
Head Constable Wang gave a wry smile. “To be honest, I’ve been dealing with so many ghostly entities and undead corpses lately that I’ve become unusually sensitive to matters like this.
“I have a feeling this might be connected to all the unrest in Wei City. The two missing body parts still haven’t been found, and now this monk dies mysteriously while pursuing the Elixir of Immortality.
“With the Qingyi Temple Festival coming up, I’m truly worried something will go terribly wrong.”
He felt like his hair was about to fall out from the stress.
Li Yanchu’s expression grew thoughtful. Head Constable Wang’s words had struck a chord. “Could all the strange events in Wei City lately be tied to this so-called Elixir of Immortality? Is it possible that news of it has spread, and that’s what’s drawn all these strange figures to Wei City?”
A sense of unease suddenly welled up within Li Yanchu. No matter what, it seemed that peace would be in short supply for Wei City in the coming days.
Regarding the apothecary, Li Yanchu felt it necessary to follow up again tomorrow. He had to refine the Qi-Booster Pill as soon as possible to improve his Daoist cultivation.
After chatting a little longer, Head Constable Wang rose to leave as curfew was about to begin. However, as Head Constable Wang stepped out, Li Yanchu glanced at him under the moonlight. And in that single glance, he suddenly sensed something was off.
He hadn’t noticed it before, but now... Li Yanchu let out a soft sound of surprise.
“Head Constable Wang, wait a moment.”
“What is it?” Head Constable Wang paused, caught off guard.
Li Yanchu frowned slightly. “It’s been a few days since we last met, have you experienced anything unusual during that time?”
Head Constable Wang’s heart sank. He asked, a bit nervously, “Daoist Master Yanchu, what do you mean?”
Li Yanchu spoke gently, “If I’m not mistaken, you may have been tainted by something unclean.”
In an instant, cold sweat poured down Head Constable Wang’s forehead. Zhao Wuzhu had died at the hands of a paper effigy. Was he going to be next?
Head Constable Wang grabbed Li Yanchu’s hand anxiously. “Daoist Master Yanchu, you must save me!”
Li Yanchu reassured him calmly, “If it were anyone else, they’d already be in mortal danger. But you’re a martial artist, full of rich blood and qi, and you serve the public office. Ordinary spirits wouldn’t dare come near you. Still, I can clearly sense a trace of evil qi clinging to you, which is strange. Think carefully, have you encountered anything unusual in the past few days?”
Head Constable Wang swallowed hard, then gave a bitter smile. “I serve in law enforcement, catching thieves and criminals... To be honest, just about everything I run into is unusual.”
Hearing this, Li Yanchu fell silent. “...”
Through his recent dealings with Head Constable Wang, Li Yanchu had come to see that the man was decent at heart. He upheld the law with fairness and integrity. For a good constable like him, Li Yanchu naturally didn’t want to see anything bad happen.
After a moment of thought, he returned to his room and took out a yellow talisman from his satchel. Then he handed it to Head Constable Wang.
“Keep this talisman on you,” Li Yanchu said seriously. “If you come into contact with anything unclean, the talisman will start to heat up. The hotter it gets, the stronger the evil presence. If that happens, get away immediately.”
Head Constable Wang accepted the talisman and replied solemnly, “Thank you!”
In that moment, he felt a sudden sense of relief. He felt lucky to have gotten to know such a capable young Daoist.
After Head Constable Wang left, Li Yanchu turned his attention back to the Jiaoslayer. The saber faintly shimmered with a cold gleam. Now that it was in his hand, it no longer felt icy.
“What a fine saber,” Li Yanchu murmured, giving it a few experimental swings. The weight felt just right.
He could tell at a glance: this was a weapon of slaughter, a saber soaked in death. It was not just knives; even swords, spears, lances, axes, and other weapons could all be called Sinreaper so long as they’d killed many people or animals.
Soaked in blood, such weapons carried an overwhelming qi of death and malice. Such weapons were often kept in homes as protective artifacts, believed to guard the household and ensure peace.
Some were even placed at city gates or hung beneath bridges, all in the hope that the weapon’s murderous qi would suppress and ward off evil spirits.
Take Li Yanchu’s own butcher’s knife, for instance. It was also a Sinreaper, though heavily damaged, and compared to the Jiaoslayer, its murderous qi was far weaker. They weren’t even in the same league.
The Jiaoslayer in Li Yanchu’s hand carried such a heavy qi of slaughter that it could already begin to affect the wielder’s state of mind. It was dangerously easy to become lost in bloodlust and hallucinations.
This sword was far more powerful than the Five-Emperor Coins sword, lightning-struck wood, cinnabar talismans, or even rooster blood. Its suppressive power against malevolent spirits was immense. If not for the fact that Head Constable Wang couldn’t handle it, this saber would never have ended up in Li Yanchu’s hands. In short, this was a weapon of serious origin.
With the Jiaoslayer in hand, Li Yanchu began practicing the Six Yang Saber Art in the courtyard. Its power was immense.
“With such a concentrated murderous qi, this saber must have claimed the lives of at least a hundred people, maybe even more,” Li Yanchu murmured, his eyes full of astonishment.
And not just any people. Ordinary folks wouldn’t suffice as their life force and resentful qi were too weak. It must be those ruthless and vicious types from the fringes of the jianghu, like bandits, horse thieves, murderers, robbers; basically ferocious and cold-blooded individuals with no regard for life.
Li Yanchu trained with great discipline, and now, with the Jiaoslayer in hand, he practiced diligently every day. He trained all three of the Six Yang Saber Art, Thirty-Six Divine Astral Hands, and Primordial Chaos Technique without rest.
By now, he had one foot firmly in the realm of second-rate martial artists.
Late at night...
Knock knock knock! Suddenly, someone knocked on the gates of the Daoist temple.
Li Yanchu had just gone to bed, but hearing the noise, he quickly got up, threw on his robes, and went out to unbolt the door.
Head Constable Wang pushed the door open and rushed in, his expression filled with panic. “Daoist Master Yanchu, please help me! You have to help me!”
Li Yanchu asked, “What happened?”
Head Constable Wang, still shaken, replied, “It was in my own home... That thing, it was right in my home!”
Li Yanchu’s brows shot up. He said gravely, “Explain everything.”
Head Constable Wang then recounted the entire story in detail.
It turned out that he had recently taken in a new concubine named Yue Niang. She was young, beautiful, and skilled in singing and dancing. She had once been a well-known courtesan in the entertainment district of Wei City. Head Constable Wang had spent a great deal of money to redeem her and bring her home as his wife.
It had originally been a very comfortable and peaceful evening. But tonight, after finishing his work late, he went to Yue Niang’s room and immediately felt the talisman on his chest begin to heat up.
