Chapter 189: [Chapter - 189]

"Remember one thing Lord Aris!"

"Never fuck the woman of the man more powerful than you."

Leo grinned as he winked at Aris.

"You get your friends killed."

The room went silent as Leo finished talking. Both Remus and Aris looked at Leo with complicated expressions.

So basically he was saying he fucked someone’s woman and that man ended up killing everyone in the Bloody Dogs, but him? What sort of luck does this boy have?

"Hahahaha"

Aris could not stop himself from laughing. For him, Leo was the most interesting man he had come across.

"Spoken like a true man, Lord Leo. Very well spoken. I will keep this in mind."

"And don’t worry, your secret is safe with us, Lord Leo." Aris said quietly. He nodded his head in a gesture of genuine respect.

Remus nodded frantically. "Yes! Completely safe!"

Leo suppressed a smirk. Instead of playing games all day long, he could have tried his hand in writing a novelkiss. He wasn’t very bad at that.

Before they could ask any more questions, the heavy oak doors of Remus’s chambers creaked open.

Leo turned his head., and saw Ryana walk into the room. The Merchant Queen had changed her clothes and was wearing a mud brown dress, her hips swaying with every step. Her sheer black veil covered the lower half of her face, making her eyes stand out.

Right behind her walked Shadow. The loyal bodyguard was back to dressing in her tight, dark leather gear, every curve of her athletic body on display.

She wore a dark veil as well that matched Ryana’s.

"High Priest," Ryana said, her voice smooth and professional, "Lord Aris. I hope I am not interrupting."

"Not at all, Lady Ryana," Remus said, standing up quickly, "We were just finishing our discussion."

"Please, come in. We have much to discuss regarding the Temple’s supply lines and your proposed payment structures."

Leo leaned back in his chair, a relaxed, perfectly polite smile plastered on his face, and looked at the two veiled women standing near the door.

Ryana had already noticed Leo sitting there with Aris, but while she greeted everyone else, she conveniently ignored him.

And this did not go unnoticed by both Remus and Aris who could feel the tension between the two of them.

’This kid!’ They thought. What else was he expecting having three women and all of them in the same damn town where they met each other almost daily. He was asking for trouble, and was getting it.

Ryana noticed their reaction as well, and her eyes darted from Remus, to Lord Aris, and finally settled on Leo.

And Leo had to give it to the businesswoman, if she was still flustered from how close she had come to bending over her own desk just an hour ago, she hid it perfectly behind her black veil.

Meanwhile, Shadow stood silently by the door, her hands resting casually near the hidden daggers at her waist. She was the perfect, emotionless bodyguard.

Or so she tried to appear. Because unlike Ryana, the poor girl wasn’t that good at hiding her emotions.

When Leo’s eyes locked on to her, he felt her body tremble visibly under his gaze.

Her breathing became heavier and he saw her fingers tap nervously against the hilt of her sword as she tried to tear her gaze away from his.

’Oh this girl! She hasn’t forgotten it at all,’ Leo could not help but feel amused, ’But revision is important. Can’t have her looking for others.’

Leo stood up. He smoothed down the front of his dark shirt.

"I think this is my cue to leave. I won’t bother you guys while you discuss your boring numbers," Leo said, his tone entirely casual. He gave Ryana a polite nod.

And then he turned towards the men, "Lord Aris, High Priest Remus. Play nice with the Merchant Queen."

"You are leaving, Lord Leo?" Aris asked, raising an eyebrow over his teacup, "Why don’t I walk you outside?"

"Ohhh, No... No..." Leo put his hand on Aris shoulder and made him sit back.

"I need to stretch my legs," Leo replied, "The air in here is a bit too thick with incense for my liking."

He walked past the high-backed chairs, heading straight for the double doors. He stopped right next to the silent, veiled bodyguard.

"Shadow here can walk me out," Leo said, and his words left absolutely no room for argument, "We can also do a perimeter check of the Temple grounds. I want to make sure the holy men are safe."

Hearing him. Ryana turned her head with a snap. Her emerald eyes narrowed slightly behind her veil. She looked at Leo, then at her bodyguard.

Shadow hesitated for exactly one second. She was bound by her duty to Ryana, paid by the Silver Route’s coin. But the sheer, undeniable physical pull she felt toward Leo was overpowering. Her body still ached from what he had done to her.

"You won’t get scared without your girl for a few minutes, would you Ryana?" Leo looked at Ryana with his eyebrow raised. His voice carried that provocative taunt that Ryana could not ignore despite what she felt right now.

She gave Shadow a stiff, jerky nod.

"That’s why I like you so much Ryana. This decisiveness of yours," Leo clapped, then he looked at Shadow, "Come, your mistress has lent you to me."

"We need to make good use of the time."

And with that without waiting for Ryana to play spoil, he turned around and left, and Shadow fell behind Leo, following him out of the chambers and leaving Ryana alone to deal with the old men.

The corridors of the Temple of Light were massive, vaulted, and right now entirely silent.

Tall stained-glass windows cast long, colourful shadows across the polished marble floors.

White marble statues of the previous High Priests of the temple stood in alcoves every twenty feet, their hands clasped in eternal, blind prayer.

No one spoke between Leo and Shadow. With Leo leading the way, they just walked deeper into the labyrinth of the Temple, away from the main prayer halls.

Finally after a series of left and right turns Leo finally spotted what he was looking for.
