Chapter 59: Jealousy

The feeling was dark and slimy, creeping down his bowels, he did not like the feeling nor could he understand it. He was not being jealous, Ravi did not believe that he was capable of that.

He had dated Alya for more than 200 years and she had a harem of lovers. Unlike some of her lovers, Ravi did not feel it, feeling that desire that she should be his alone.

"Jealousy is unbecoming of an immortal." She would always say and would encourage him to try other lovers.

He did not, bearing her already took all he had, how could he have the strength to stray?

He looked at Arlen who was still talking to Lisa. They were not even lovers, they were still borderline friends who had only exchanged two sentences in their chat. How could he be jealous?

That was simply impossible.

"Where did you go again?"

Ravi blinked and looked up at Arlen.

Arlen just chuckled, "Let’s go and interview a few more people."

"Are we going together?"

Arlen paused and looked back, "Is there another person that you would rather do the interviews? Lisa, I could call her back." There was something in his tone that Ravi could not tell but the light smile on his face was missing. Why did he feel like he was upset?

He had just been smiling just a few seconds ago and now he was already upset. Could it be, what was that sickness that he had seen in Blue Bloods a few days ago...

"No need. Let’s go, Captain." He said and the light smile returned.

See?

They walked down the path, the fire had just affected the Michaels Grills and Bar and nowhere else. This was a fairly new neighborhood, It had been built twenty years ago and was modeled more like the Estate houses in the Capital.

Aside from the shops and the restaurants, all the residential buildings were one-storey buildings with cream and blue paintings, a small black gate, and a small yard. Aesthetically, it was pleasing to the eyes, but Ravi’s focus was on Arlen, the moment that thought took root, it was almost impossible to be rid of.

"Just say it.." Arlen said, looking at him. That expression of should I, should I not was endlessly entertaining but he was concerned that if Ravi continued to swallow whatever it was, he might just burst.

"Do you have Bipolar disorder?"

Arlen almost bumped into the gate as he did a 360 to face Ravi.

"Bipolar? What...Why would you come to such a conclusion? Wasn’t that such a wild throw?"

Ravi licked his lips, bringing Arlen’s attention to the pink, full lips. If you bite it, it would swell up, it would probably turn as red as Ravi’s cheeks when he is embarrassed. He blinked, forcing his gaze from those lips.

Wait, those lips had been moving.

Arlen felt a rare emotion of embarrassment and he scratched his head, "Just now, what did you say?"

"Your mood is a little erratic."

Arlen chuckled, "Everyone’s mood gets erratic at times, it is not one steady stream. Besides, mood swings are not the only thing that characteristics Bipolar disorder, it..."

"Excuse me, Officers. What are you doing here?" A middle-aged woman greeted them as she opened the door. She was petite, with brown hair and a pair of black obsidian eyes.

"Good morning!" Arlen was smiling again, the woman visibly relaxed and smiled in turn.

"Good morning, Officer..."

"Sinclair. Arlen Sinclair. I just want to ask some questions about the fire. Just routine, you don’t have to worry."

The woman nodded, "Okay, do you want to come inside, I just whipped up some cold watermelon juice. The sun is hot today, you can have some."

Say No.

"Sure." Arlen smiled and entered inside.

"Beautiful house." Arlen said as he took his shoes off, leaving just black socks.

"Oh my! How mannered."

It did not take five minutes for him to charm the rocks off the woman. Within ten minutes, she was confiding in him about all her problems and all the gossip. It was not just the woman, the old man next door had claimed that Arlen reminded him of his grandson and even talked about leaving him in the will.

He helped a young girl ride her bike and gave another woman tips on repairing her leaking sink.

"I think that the second Mary did it for the insurance. When we were growing up, she had always talked about going to the Capitol. Her older brother and father ended up leaving her to run the grill by herself. She must have been jealous and I heard that she is the only one that survived. She is a mean girl, that one. She even fought with her older brother all the time and they said that.." The man moved closer to whisper to Arlen, "That she kicked her sister-in-law in the stomach when she was pregnant. Everyone here hates her."

Arlen nodded his head, "Is that so?"

"Yes." The man said while he delved into some gossip.

Ravi had lied.

It was not that he did not feel upset about Alya’s harem. In the beginning, he had been but he had learned that people like Alya could not belong to just one person. He was not just enough for her. So he had taken that emotion and buried it so deep in the creases of his heart that it might as well not exist.

"Jealousy is unbecoming of an immortal."

At times, he wanted to say that he was not an immortal, he was a human. He was only human. A human who wanted his lover’s affection to be only on him.

He looked at Arlen. They were not lovers, they were barely friends, what was so wrong with him that he wanted this person’s warmth to be on him? He smiled so easily at everyone, Ravi wondered if, to Arlen, he was just a nameless face in the ever-moving trade of people that he was kind to.

He did not want it. He clenched his fist. Something was really wrong with him. How could he be so absurdly selfish?
