Chapter 253: The first slice of cake

Romeo was a bit shy, getting called like that and the adults around him chuckled.

"Oh, isn’t he adorable?" Jane snickered and Romeo poured.

"I’m a big man so don’t call me adorable." He glared and she laughed, waving her hand.

"Alright, adorable big man. You don’t want to keep the princess waiting, do you?" She said and Romeo got down from his chair with Paige’s help.

He adjusted his suspenders, put on his confident face and walked towards the podium with his little legs and his head high.

Rachael giggled as she watched him. She was happy she could at least share this moment with a true friend.

Romeo reached the podium and stood next to Rachael who giggled.

Then, Raymond glanced over at Alexa. It was like he was getting approval from her and she smiled, waving them to continue.

He smiled and turned to his daughter.

"Let’s cut it together."

Romeo leaned to whisper in Rachael’s ear.

"You did great." He said and Rachael tittered.

"Hehe, I’m just so great. I was a bit nervous because there’s a lot of people but I didn’t want to let daddy down so I sucked it up." She once again raised her head high in pride and Romeo laughed.

"You’re funny."

Raymond held both Romeo and Rachael’s hands on the cake and together, with the count of the guests, they cut the cake.

"Cake! Cake!" Romeo excitedly called out and Rachael followed, raising her hands in excitement as well.

"Let’s eat the cake already."

"Yes." They stepped aside as the servants came up to cut the cake. The first slice was given to Rachael but she simply stared at it, causing Raymond to ask, "What’s wrong?"

She looked at him with sad eyes and then at the crowd of guests, her line of vision looking directly at Alexa’s table. Then, she beckoned Raymond to lower his head and she whispered,

"I want mummy to have the first slice."

Raymond was surprised but his surprised face fell into a sweet smile and he nodded.

"I think she’ll like that." He said, "But if you go down now, everyone will look at her. Do you want them to know it’s her now?"

Rachael lowered her head, thinking for a while and then she came up with an idea.

"Romeo." She called and leaned in to whisper in his ear. His eyes widened and he nodded, excited.

"I’ll do it." She gave him the cake and he slowly walked back to his table and sat down like nothing happened.

Everyone’s attention was actually on him, wondering what children of this generation were planning to do and to get their attention away from Romeo, Rachael took the mic and announced,

"Let’s all enjoy the cake. Thank you for coming." Rachael said,

They clapped as Raymond fed Rachael her the cake.

Alexa, who was watching them, caught Romeo sliding the plate of cake to her through her corner eye and she turned to him.

"What’s this? You want me to have your cake?"

He shook his head and said,

"It’s not mine." He smiled brightly. "Rachael wanted you to have the first slice, so she asked me to bring it to you and not let the guests find out it’s for you." He said.

Alexa stared at the cake and then at Romeo. Compared to the first time they met, he was more gullible and child-like than he was then. She didn’t know what changed him but maybe maybe he just wanted to be a cute dependable younger brother to Rachael.

But honestly, is that what she should be thinking of right now? She stared at the cake, and then her daughter on the podium, smiling brightly and her eyes teared up.

She had such a caring and loving daughter that she couldn’t stop herself from tearing up.

"Hey, why are you crying now?" Jane asked, causing everyone at the table to look at her but she shook her head. "Is it because of the cake? Well, if you don’t want it, I’ll eat it for you."

She wanted to take the cake but Alexa smacked her hand away.

"As if." She said, picked up a fork and took the first bite. The cake was so sweet that it immediately melted in her mouth and more tears rolled down her cheeks.

It wasn’t the sweetness of the cake that was making her, but rather, it was the sweet feeling she was getting from being loved so dearly by her daughter. She felt proud, happy and filled with satisfaction.

There was always this wish she had in her heart. It was for her daughter to keep smiling, laughing and never know pain. Pretty much the same wish every mother would have but aside from that... It was a feeling that was deeply engraved in her heart as she knew the feeling of suffering more than anyone.

Though she didn’t have her memories, she knew deep down that her childhood wasn’t filled with roses. Especially when she thought of all that scar on her back. There was no way she wouldn’t feel the suffering at heart.

Though the mind may forget, the heart could never forget.

The party had started off well and the guests started exchanging little talks with one another. Though they didn’t dare to gossip, they still went ahead to talk about business and family related topics.

Rachael was seated at a table filled with kids and listened to them yapping with a smile on her face. She laughed at their jokes occasionally and looked like she was having fun but that was fake. She was so good at fooling the adults with her smile, of course she could fool a few kids who were still wet behind the ears.

She glanced at Raymond who was exchanging talks with some big figures and then returned her gaze to the kids in front of her. She was bored.

Even Romeo was talking with the adults. He seemed to be having more fun than she was and she felt envious. She would rather sit next to her mother at a time like this.

Then, from behind, Alexa approached with her wheelchair and said,

"May I borrow the time of the little princess?"

As soon as Rachael heard her mother’s voice, she turned around in excitement. But before she could say anything, one of the kids tsked and remarked,

"What is a cripple doing here?"

As soon as Rachael heard this, her head turned to them in the motion of a robot and she glared at them, her eyes screaming terror.

"What did you just say?"
