I Am An Illegitimate Child With A Legitimate Reason For Revenge-Chapter 221: The drawing was... my wish
As soon as they walked in, Paige caught sight of Serena and almost lost her shit but Maxwell held her back and said,
"Now is not the time, wifey. Everything must follow its course of action."
She gave out a sigh to relieve herself and touched his face.
"Thank you." They made their way to sit at a different row, far from Serena but Raymond went to sit right next to her.
Taking his seat next to her, he said,
"Long time."
"No see." She completed and his eyes glowed hatred as he stared at her. He badly wanted to rip her skin by skin.
"You seem well." Raymond said and crossed his legs.
"As I should be." She also said and grinned. "Although, I can’t say the same for you. You look terrible, little brother."
"Really? I think my skin has improved quite a bit these days. Unlike before," his eyes bore into her soul before trailing away to the stage in front of them. "...I am pretty much at ease these days."
Serena was silent. Of course, why wouldn’t he be at ease? He had his beloved in his hands but how much longer would that be for?
"Let’s hope you stay at ease past tonight, dear little brother." She remarked and focused on the stage as well.
The opening of the event, as well as welcoming speech were all said by Moses.
Just as well as how he had been performing so far, his performance that night did not disappoint and exceptionally exceeded the expectations of everyone present.
"Hm, if only I had someone as competent." Serena remarked as the rounds of applause filled the air. "Oh wait, I do but he is currently nowhere to be found." She turned her head to him. "Do you perhaps know where I can find him? Hm, little brother?"
Raymond silently and slowly glanced at her and then his lips curled up in a cruel smirk.
"I wonder."
Meanwhile, Steve’s car finally got to the venue. Though he said they were almost there over thirty minutes ago, he couldn’t help it as he was delayed by the suddenly packed road.
It would seem the appearance of Raymond’s sister, Serena Stein, the only person he did not bother to wipe out of existence, caused a massive stir.
People wanted to be close to the venue, even if they couldn’t be inside. They at least wanted to know what was going on and if a fight between two half siblings would ensue in this event of the year.
"Are you tired, Rachael?" Jane asked Rachael who shook her head. She was in Jane’s arms and Steve had wanted against the camera flashes. It was best to keep her away from it since it was her first time.
As they walked in through the red carpet, the flashes would not stop and Jane felt uneasy with them. She could only imagine how Rachael, known as experiencing such a thing for the first time, would respond to them if she had been faced with those reporters head on.
"I’ll have to speak to the guards so you two go in first." Steve instructed and Jane nodded.
She made her way to the inner hall and Rachael asked to be placed down. They peeped into the hall and like people who had never been to such events before, wondered how they would get in.
While they were still contemplating, Romeo came out. He saw Rachael and his face lit up.
"You made it." He said and she nodded.
"But, how do we get in without attracting attention to ourselves?" Jane asked. "Do you have any idea, little prince?"
At being called little prince, Romeo blushed a bit and then cleared his throat.
"I’m afraid not." He said. "But, we can hang out here together. Inside is so boring. I’d rather have snacks here than go back inside."
Rachael gave it a thought. Being outside with Romeo was great and all but she wanted to go in and sit next to Raymond, if she could.
"Not yet inside?" Steve asked as he approached them and Jane shook her head. He looked at them for a while, then at the door and then darted his eyes aside while thinking.
"Hm, I think it would be wise to stay outside here than go in. Rachael." He directed his words to her, as if reading her thoughts.
He knew that Serena was inside. It would be best if Serena did not spot Jane and then give orders to have her family members endangered and it would also serve best if she didn’t see Rachael as well.
Rachael examined Steve for a while and then at Romeo. The little boy knew nothing but was clear his father did.
Anyway, there was no harm in listening to advice.
"Alright. Let’s go to the snack table." She said,
The outer hall was practically empty as everyone had gone into the inner hall for the first course of the event.
"Can I talk to you for a moment?" Steve called Jane aside.
Rachael watched them and then looked forward. Though the hall was empty of its guests, there were guards stationed close by in case of any emergency.
"Are you sad about the drawing?" Romeo asked, out of nowhere but she shook her head and turned to the table, thinking of how she was going to get the strawberry cake without Jane.
"Should I claim the chair?" She wondered. 𝕗𝚛𝚎𝚎𝐰𝗲𝗯𝗻𝚘𝚟𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝕞
"You can’t say you’re not sad." Romeo said. It was like he was imposing it on her when she said she wasn’t but this little boy knew what he was talking about.
He, for one, noticed the expression she had on when her mother cried and then complimented the drawing. It was like she didn’t get to show what she really wanted to show.
He watched Rachael lean on the table and sigh.
"You keep looking at me like that." She said, "You really want to know?"
Romeo’s eyes were filled with curiosity as well as concern. Whereas hers was filled with longing. She lowered her head.
"It’s just that... compared to making a wish on a shooting star or birthday candles, praying that they come true, that drawing was... my wish." Rachael confessed. "It was the message I wanted to send across to them and also my wish. I wish that we... will become one happy family."
Romeo suddenly placed a hand on her shoulder and she raised her head. He was smiling at her like he was proud of her when he was just a little dimwit.
"I’m sure they got the message, loud and clear." He said.
"You think so?"
"I know so."
He sounded so confident that Rachael decided to think positively and take his word for it.
"Alright." She raised her head, only to see Jane overreacting while speaking with Steve.
Even when dolled up so prettily, she could still act all wild.
"Stay with them, I’ll go in to see how things are going." Steve said made his way to the inner hall.
Jane watched him leave and then sighed. She never knew things were as dangerous as this.
Steve had told her that Serena was in the building and her people would try to catch her, thinking she was Alexa so she had to remain in plain sight.
Though she was not that worried about herself, she was worried about Rachael.
She knew how much Alexa would flip if something were to happen to the little girl and she had pretty much already done more harm by asking that weird question, causing her to feel bad before Raymond’s return.
"Okay, I can do this."
"Do what?" Rachael asked after creeping up on her.
"Agh." Jane exclaimed in fright. She didn’t expect them to come up to her so suddenly. "Phew. Forget about it."
"Hm." Rachael tilted her head to the side and then pointed at the dessert table. "Then, could you help me get a slice of cake? I’m too small to reach it." She nicely requested.
"Of course."
They happily had their fill of the dessert and though Rachael was gradually feeling a few strange eyes in them, she ignored them since it was quite inevitable that there would be eyes on them, seeing that there were guards all over the place.
"Hm, if only there was ice cream." Rachael muttered a bit out loud after finishing her cake.
"Right? That’s the same thing I thought about." Romeo said and chuckled.
"Romeo, if something bad suddenly happens, how will you contact daddy?" Rachael asked and Romeo showed his wristwatch.
"There’s this alarm here and..." she suddenly closed his mouth and glanced around. It would be bad to show his emergency material out to suspicious eyes.
She just wanted to confirm if there was indeed a way to call her daddy in case of an emergency.
"The enemy could be watching." She muttered and let go.
Romeo, though oblivious to all that was going on, found it thrilling and his eyes shimmered.
Well, Rachael didn’t know much either but the intuition of this child was so great that they were almost never wrong. Sometimes, she wished they were.
