Chapter 4: What's Happening?

"What's happening...?" a female student asked, confusion and fear evident in her voice.

For the first time, Sky responded:

"Isn't it obvious? The United armies are running out of support and are now resorting to recruiting students to join. They're literally sending us to death's door, and I'm not interested in going there just yet."

With that, he walked out of the classroom, hands shoved deep into his sweatpants.

The students' faces fell in shock; they had never expected him to join the conversation, even if only briefly. The blonde glanced at Katie, who remained engrossed in her reading, seemingly oblivious to the turmoil around her.

"Fucking witch..." he cursed under his breath, storming out in anger. It was clear he hated her ten times more than anyone else in the class. She was the reason he had started to entertain the idea of throwing her off the top of the class—and him taking her place.

The whole class fell into an eerie silence after the outburst. Eyes darted around the room, each student exchanging glances filled with confusion and uncertainty.

Inside the principal's office, sunlight streamed through the open shutters. A ceiling fan whirred slowly overhead, while the air conditioner blew a cool breeze. The scent of lavender lingered in the air, creating a surprisingly serene atmosphere. The room was spacious, featuring two couches in the center, divided by a coffee table adorned with a vase of flowers.

The school's logo was prominently displayed on the wall, and a chubby man sat behind the desk, his back to the wall. He wore a suit, but with the coat removed, revealing a white shirt damp with sweat despite the cool air.

Two teachers, Ms. Airi and Mr. Mike, stood beside the door, their expressions tense. The commander of the troop that had recently arrived, along with a second officer, stood in front of the chubby man. The desk was cluttered with files and a desktop computer.

"...Y-you want to recruit the senior classes into the United Army?" Principal Gerald stammered, his voice shaking as he stared at the two military officers standing over him.

The two officers looked him dead in the eye, their seriousness making him feel small.

Ms. Airi tightened her grip on her phone, a few strands of her brown hair falling across her face. Her brown eyes shifted nervously, and her white office shirt was slightly wrinkled, revealing her modestly sized breasts. The black blouse she wore accentuated her straight body and subtly highlighted her curves.

Principal Gerald's eyes fell to the badge fixed on the man standing before him; it bore one silver stripe, indicating that he was a Corporal, not a commander. This also suggested he was quite young, likely in his mid-twenties.

However, this fact meant little. Regardless of his age, he was still a military officer in charge of a troop, and that sent shivers down Gerald's spine.

"I actually don't think we need to explain more. Can I have a chat with the kids?" the Corporal asked, his voice was cold and filled with a commanding tone.

Ms. Airi instantly interjected just as Principal Gerald was about to give his approval.

"I believe we should inform their parents before making any decisions. We will need their approval..."

Gerald and Mike were flustered by her outspoken nature. On their own, they would never have suggested such a course of action due to their fears.

The Corporal shot her a side glance; his blue eyes appeared lifeless and emotionless.

"Sure. But I would like to have a conversation with them first..." he insisted.

Principal Gerald swallowed hard and replied, "Yeah, sure... Go on. Ms. Airi, please lead them to the classrooms."

Ms. Airi obeyed, and the two officers turned to follow her out, while Mr. Mike remained in the office with the Principal. Sweat began to gather on his brow.

Outside, two students were eavesdropping on the conversation occurring in the office. As soon as they heard the conclusion, anxiety washed over them—they needed to escape before getting caught.

One student tapped the other, then urged him to run straight down the hallway toward the stairs, following closely behind. They sprinted as fast as they could to their classroom.

As they arrived at the classroom, Sky and the blonde quickly decided to inform their classmates about an exciting visitor. They had just returned from wherever they had been.

"Guys, the handsome Corporal is on his way here right now!"

With that announcement, everyone scrambled to their seats as they heard the sound of approaching footsteps.

Soon after, a pair of black military boots with a rugged, utilitarian look and sturdy build entered the room. The Corporal stepped in first, followed by Ms. Airi, and lastly, the second officer.

He moved to the front and scanned the entire class. The girls' faces flushed red at the sight of him, while the boys stood speechless; he resembled a fallen angel.

"Is he Sky's senior brother?" one student whispered to her friend, who nodded in agreement.

Sky locked eyes with the Corporal for a moment. He flashed a brief, fake smile that quickly fell away, rolling his eyes in annoyance. The Corporal raised an eyebrow in response.

There was an undeniable connection between them, hinting at a shared history.

With the class calm and silent, no murmurs to be heard, he began:

"Hello, students. I'm Corporal Levitt, and this is—" He gestured to the second officer, who was heavily built with a black short beard. His muscles strained against the uniform, and his rugged face was framed by intense black eyes that held an air of intimidation. The officer wore a plain white uniform with a shoulder patch, indicating his rank as a Private. He appeared to be in his late thirties. "This is Private Donald..."

"It's been 20 years since the rise of the Exiles, and we are nowhere near defeating them. They have evolved over the years to the point where our weapons are no longer as effective against them..." Corporal Levitt paused, allowing the gravity of his words to sink in. He scanned the room, noting the fear and confusion etched on the students' faces.

He continued, "Thanks to the newly developed serum, we finally have a chance to challenge them again. However—"

Sky scowled, sensing where the discussion was heading.

"However," Corporal Levitt resumed, "we have lost many warriors to these monsters. Therefore, the Defence staff will be launching a Worldwide Mobilisation Policy, recruiting 60% of senior students, each of whom will receive the serum..."

The students exchanged worried glances, and Ms. Airi looked equally concerned; she hadn't been informed that students would also be injected.

"It will ultimately be your decision," he added. "If you want to receive it or not."
