Her Rebirth.-Chapter 39
Chapter 39: Chapter 39
The ten-story glass building stood proud, its sleek structure reflecting the golden hues of the setting sun. Two bold letters, ED, were displayed at the top, a name that had become synonymous with innovation, power, and ruthless efficiency.
In just three years, ED Technologies had taken the world by storm, rising from obscurity to become a billion-dollar empire. The world saw it as an upcoming tech giant, but only a select few knew the truth. Its roots lay deep within the underworld; otherwise, how could it have grown this fast without unseen hands pulling the strings?
On the top floor, inside a vast, elegantly furnished office, a cold figure sat behind a large glass and wooden desk.
"Sir."
Secretary Wen placed a thick file onto the desk. Kai picked up the document and scanned through the pages. Everything was there. Every dirty secret the BlackBourne family had tried to bury, corruption, hidden debts, backdoor dealings.
It would take just one well-placed leak, and their entire empire would crumble.
Secretary Wen watched as his boss’s lips curled into a small, almost imperceptible smile, and he shivered.
He still remembered when he first met Kai Blackwood. The young man had seemed warm, his smiles felt warm and reassuring.
But three years under his command had taught him otherwise.
That smile... was not a good sign.
Beneath that charming exterior lurked a man who took pleasure in violence and found entertainment in watching his enemies fall into ruin. A man completely mentally unstable.
Secretary Wen swallowed hard. He could only light a candle for the BlackBourne family.
The BlackBourne family was doomed.
---
Amelia came home first.
Seeing that Kai was not around, she felt a little pang of loneliness that she didn’t dwell on. Kai was a lively person, and she appreciated his presence. But after that confrontation with his father, he didn’t come home as much anymore. And even if he did, he looked so busy, not sparing any time to even speak to her. If she weren’t trying to avoid overthinking, she would have believed he was avoiding her.
Amelia sighed and walked up to the guest room. Once she took a shower, she wore her nightgown, fell onto her bed, and within seconds, she was asleep.
Click. Clang. Clack.
A frown creased Amelia’s brows.
What the hell was making so much noise this early in the morning?
She forced her eyes open, only to immediately squint as sunlight streamed into the room.
Morning?
Amelia scowled. It felt like she had only slept for five minutes.
Suppressing a yawn, she lazily made her way downstairs, following the source of the noise. But the moment she reached the kitchen doorway—
She froze.
Kai stood in the kitchen, his sleeves rolled up, an apron tied snugly around his waist.
He was cooking.
As if sensing her presence, he turned, flashing her a smile that left Amelia completely dumbstruck.
"Did I wake you?" he asked.
She shook her head.
"Oh, that’s good."
She watched as he went back to stirring the chopped beef.
He looked... nice.
And really handsome.
Too handsome.
Her gaze lingered on the way his fingers moved, the way the muscles in his forearms flexed slightly as he handled the pan.
Kai suddenly glanced at her, his gray eyes filled with amusement. "I feel like I’m going to be eaten by you if you keep on staring at me like that."
Amelia blinked.
She hadn’t realized she’d been staring.
Flustered, she quickly looked away. "I was just... surprised."
Kai smirked. "Do you want to join me?"
She hesitated for a moment before nodding. "Sure."
He reached over, placing an onion and a knife in front of her. "You can chop this."
Amelia took the knife and began cutting, but her movements were awkward, uneven. She didn’t even hold the knife properly.
Why did she agree to do this in the first place?
Kai, watching from the side, let out a soft chuckle.
Amelia’s cheeks flushed.
"Here," Kai said, stepping behind her.
Before she could react, he gently took her hand in his, guiding her fingers into a proper grip.
His body was close. Too close.
His voice was smooth as he spoke, his breath brushing against her ear. "Hold it like this. Don’t press too hard. Just let the blade do the work."
Amelia tried to focus, but—
He smelled really good.
A mix of clean soap, spice, and something distinctly... Kai.
And his hands, his hands were big, strong. They completely covered hers.
"Are you listening?"
His deep voice was right in her ear.
A warm shiver ran down her spine, her entire body tensing.
Her ears turned faint pink.
Kai’s smirk widened. "Your ears are pink."
"They are not," Amelia denied immediately, and despite having a calm expression, the heat coursing through her betrayed her as her ears became beet red.
Kai chuckled. It was low and teasing. For a brief second, he had the overwhelming urge to nibble at her earlobe just to see how much redder she could get.
But he knew his limits. Going further might just scare her.
So instead, he simply murmured, "That’s how you chop an onion."
And then he stepped away.
Amelia exhaled sharply.
It was only then that she realized her heart had been racing the entire time.
Kai casually plated the food as if nothing had happened.
As he set the dishes down, he spoke casually. "There’s a charity event happening soon. You should come with me."
Amelia glanced up. "A charity event?"
Kai nodded. "One hosted by the Blackwood family."
Her fingers twitched slightly at the mention of his family. If the Blackwood family was holding it, then there was a high chance she might meet the Cosgrove family, most likely Lilac and Ace Blackwood.
Kai, catching the slight movement, smirked. "I have to attend, being a Blackwood son and all. And since you’re my fiancée, it’s only right you come with me."
Amelia hesitated for only a second before nodding.
"Alright. I’ll go."
