Chapter 243: Kiss (II)

"I know it sounds scary, but I just did what I thought was right."

Ruan Chanchan knew that the dangers that she took were really risky. But if she didn’t take those risks, she was worried that there was a very good chance that they might have never gotten another chance.

"And that is the problem." His thumb brushed against the inside of her wrist, right where her pulse was betraying her.

Once.

Twice.

Thrice.

Ruan Chanchan swallowed hard. "Xie Daiyu." She sucked in a breath and said, "What are you doing?"

"I am trying to calm myself down." His mouth curved faintly as he raised his hand and brushed the locks of Ruan Chanchan’s hair off her face. "I am actually very upset, Chanchan. It’s bad enough that you didn’t listen to the command of the chief. But what is even worse is that you actually ran out without telling me. What were you even thinking, Chanchan? When my mother tied me to you, she was not joking. She truly wanted us to be together. If you continue acting like this, what will happen to me, huh?"

He closed his eyes and tried to restrain his emotions that were surging in a manner one couldn’t even explain. He said to her, "Is it because you don’t take me as yours? Were you lying when you told me that you were willing to accept me?"

Ruan Chanchan sighed. She did feel a bit guilty when she heard the mer say that she was not willing to accept him. She stepped close to him. With Ruan Chanchan stepping close to him, there was no space left between the two of them.

"If you are upset, then you can say what is on your mind," she told him. "There is no need for you to hold it in."

Xie Daiyu lowered his head and looked down at her.

"You scared me," he said. There was no blame in his voice. He simply looked at her and relayed the simple, honest and unavoidable truth that he couldn’t ignore.

Ruan Chanchan’s breath got caught.

"It was never my intention," she told him in a whisper.

"I know, you didn’t want to, but that is what hurts me even more," Xie Daiyu explained with a pained expression. "The fact that you didn’t even think of me. Not even once, when you were aware that what you were going to do was dangerous, did you even tell me, nor did you leave a word behind. Tell me, if something happened to you today—which was highly possible since the task you took was dangerous—what would have happened to me?"

"Have you ever...even for a second thought about it?"

Xie Daiyu didn’t want to blame Ruan Chanchan but he could not stop himself. His destined one didn’t seem to understand the importance that she held in his life.

If she had died today, Xie Daiyu would have followed her right away. In the past, he wouldn’t have cared, but now that he knew that she was his destined one, there was no way he could have survived the pain of losing his destined one. Not even in a million years.

His hand slid from her wrist to her waist. His fingers were firm and grounded. Like if he were to let her go, the world might just take her away from him.

Ruan Chanchan sighed and raised a hand to place it on his chest. She could feel his thunderous heartbeat as his heart was racing at that very moment.

"Xie Daiyu, there is no need to worry," she told him. Her voice was softer now as she realised that the mer was truly scared. "I am not dead. I am here, in front of you."

"And that’s the only reason I have not gone crazy," he closed his eyes and pressed his forehead against her. "It’s a good thing that you are here; if you had died, then I am afraid that I might have lost all my rationality."

He didn’t kiss her, and yet his warmth alone was enough to ease their strained nerves."

"If you had died... I have no idea what I would have done," he said in a voice so quiet that Ruan Chanchan would not have heard him if she were not paying attention.

Xie Daiyu was not lying; if Ruan Chanchan had died tonight, he would have never forgiven Yuan Ni and Ruan Zeqiu, those two idiotic mers. Ruan Chanchan was reckless, and she had never gone out of the tribe; thus, she didn’t know the severity of the dangers that were lurking outside the tribe. But those two were aware of what was happening. How could they even bring her to this place just because she asked them to? Had they gone crazy? They must have because if they were not, then why would they have accepted Ruan Chanchan’s crazy demands?

Ruan Chanchan had no idea what the mer was thinking about. She patted him on the cheek and said to him, "Then it is a good thing that I have a wretched life. There is no way that I am going to die any time soon." 𝑓𝑟ℯ𝘦𝓌𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝑐ℴ𝓂

Xie Daiyu listened to her remark. His gaze darkened and so when the woman turned to pull away, he didn’t let her; instead, he pulled her close.

"What?"

Ruan Chanchan asked. Her eyes flickered with unease as she looked at the mer. She thought that he was still angry with her but then the mer leaned in. his actions were slow and deliberate, as if he was giving her time to pull away. She knew that she should but Ruan Chanchan didn’t. She stood where she was and allowed the mer to kiss her.

Their lips met – at first the kiss was brief and restrained, but slowly it became charged. There was so much hunger and desperation in that fleeting kiss that Ruan Chanchan didn’t know what to make of it. She couldn’t say that the kiss was wild but the mere touch was filled with such heat that her mind went blank.
