Chapter 239: Good night

Opening the door to his room, Brandon glanced back at Charlotte "Are you sure? We can get another room for you..."

Charlotte shook her head gently "No need to, I will leave tomorrow morning, so it’s a hassle to book another room... Or do you not want to sleep with me?"

Hearing this, he chuckled "It’s not like that... come in."

She stepped into his room and looked around for a moment.

Brandon casually removed his shirt and placed it in the basket before removing his pants.

Then he took a pair of shorts from the cupboard and wore it.

Charlotte looked at him for a moment before she began to remove her cloak and the heavy garment slipped off her shoulders, revealing the fitted clothes beneath.

Piece by piece, she stripped down until she was left standing in nothing but a matching blue bra and panties.

As Brandon turned to look at her, he saw her well-defined body and the curves of her feminine body.

His gaze lingered on the genesis mark on her abdomen and smiled faintly.

Charlotte noticed his gaze but didn’t say anything and took a tank top and shorts from her storage ring.

Bzzzz.

Brandon’s phone lit up on the nightstand, and his eyes flicked to the screen. The name glowing across it made him instantly soften.

"Eira," he murmured with a small smile, reaching for the device.

Charlotte’s fingers froze mid-adjusting her top and her gaze condensed upon hearing the name ’Eira...’

Brandon opened the balcony and stepped out "Yeah... I reached safely. Don’t worry, it’s just for a few days. I’ll be careful."

Charlotte sat down on the edge of the bed and the faint night breeze from the open balcony door brushed past her.

She knows he has a girlfriend called Eira in the Academy.

She knows how his power works, as he needs to absorb energy from women and he can also copy their skills.

She closed her eyes for a moment ’I should not let that third personality out, or she will again ruin his relationship with another woman.’

This is the reason she acted like she hated him and stayed away from him.

Because whenever she is close to him, her other personality tries to resurface.

Her green eyes dimmed as fragments of memory resurfaced.

Back in his university years, he had a gentle, loving girlfriend who truly cared for him.

Brandon was happy, genuinely happy.

But the third personality of hers never wanted to acknowledge another woman in his life.

And before Charlotte realized it, she was standing in front of that girl with blue eyes.

She spoke harsh, cutting words to Brandon’s girlfriend, poisoning her with doubt and fear.

She made sure that girl broke things off with him.

And Brandon was left hurt and confused, wondering why someone he loved so much suddenly turned away.

’All because of me...’

One self that loved him protectively like a sister, one self that loved him obsessively like a woman, and one self... the real her, torn in between.

Her gaze quivered ’If he knows this truth.. he will surely hate me...’

She inhaled deeply and turned her head toward the balcony, and through the open door, she caught a glimpse of him leaning on the railing.

The faint moonlight softened his features, his short hair rustling gently in the breeze as he listened to Eira’s soft voice on the other side of the call.

Brandon chuckled lightly at something Eira said "Alright, alright. I’ll call again tomorrow."

After ending the call, he entered back into the room and placed the mobile on the nightstand.

"Nothing much, Eira was just worried about me..."

Charlotte gave a soft nod and only then Brandon realised something. "I never introduced Eira to you, I will introduce you to her next time..."

Hearing this, Charlotte gave another nod "Hmm..."

He tilted his head and asked "Is something the matter? You are awfully silent."

With a soft chuckle, she shook her head and replied "Nothing..."

"...Alright," he said with a faint smile. "If you say so."

He stretched his arms overhead, letting out a soft yawn "Let’s get some rest then."

Charlotte quietly slipped beneath the covers as she lay on her side, facing the wall for a moment, as if debating whether she should keep some distance ’It’s just one night. Don’t think too much about it.’

Brandon joined her and slipped under the blankets on the other side of the bed.

As they lay there, silence stretched between them.

Brandon rested on his back for a while, staring up at the ceiling, before turning his head slightly toward her.

Her back was still to him, her long hair spilling over the pillow in soft waves.

"Charlotte, thanks for coming all the way here. It’s... nice to see you again."

Her shoulders stiffened "It’s nothing. I just wanted to see how you’re doing."

A faint smile curved his lips in the dark "I’m doing better than before."

Charlotte closed her eyes and her heartbeat subtly quickened.

Brandon shifted slightly, adjusting himself to lie more comfortably.

Then, as if guided by instinct, he turned to face her back.

Without thinking much, he reached out and gently pulled the blanket to cover her shoulders a little more snugly.

The small gesture made Charlotte’s chest tighten and she kept still, not wanting him to notice how her breath had subtly hitched.

"Goodnight, Charlotte," he murmured softly.

"...Goodnight."

He looked at her for a moment, wanting to sleep while hugging her but he held back and closed his eyes.

For a while, they stayed like that...

Then, slowly, Charlotte shifted just slightly, turning halfway so she was lying on her back now, facing the ceiling.

Out of the corner of her eyes, she could see Brandon beside her and noticed he is sleeping already.

She stared at him quietly in the dark ’Why does it feel so much harder to keep my other self at bay when I’m this close to him...?’

Her hand twitched slightly under the blanket... just for a moment to reach out to him.

But she stopped herself, curling her fingers into the sheets instead.

Eventually her breathing slowed and she closed her eyes.

And just like that, the two of them drifted into sleep on the same bed, holding back the words and feelings neither could bring themselves to say aloud.
