Chapter 27: Chapter 27 She couldn’t understand him, couldn’t see through him.
Huating was brightly lit because Shen Zhiyi hadn’t eaten much all day due to the red carpet event. She had barely eaten during dinner and was then called to check out an auction. By the time she came back, she was dizzy with hunger. Seizing the opportunity while Pei Yu was changing clothes, she whispered to the housekeeper, “I’m hungry.”
The female housekeeper smiled, the fine lines around her eyes softening, “What would you like to eat?”
“Just something simple.”
“Simple?” The housekeeper chuckled, “Then I’ll cook. It won’t be as delicious as your aunt’s, but don’t look down on it.”
“How could I,” Shen Zhiyi said as she changed into a nightgown and leaned casually against the wall. She suddenly became curious, “Have you worked here for a long time?”
“Seven years.”
She wasn’t sure if it was just a casual question or if Zhiyi was curious about Pei Yu, but since she hardly knew anything about Pei Yu, the housekeeper deliberately guided the conversation to that topic, “I started working here when Mr. Pei took charge.”
The vast mansion was inhabited only by Pei Yu, creating an exceedingly empty atmosphere, which piqued Shen Zhiyi’s curiosity. She asked more questions, “Were there many people living here previously?”
“Yes,” the housekeeper said, “Mr. Pei’s father had five sons and three daughters. They all lived here, and Mr. Pei was the youngest.”
Pei Yu had so many siblings?
Shen Zhiyi remembered the stance Pei Yu had as he leaned against the car on the mountain that night, his desolation and solitude, and found it hard to imagine that he had actually grown up in a bustling family.
“Mr. Pei has had a hard time; it’s only gotten a bit better these past few years,” the housekeeper said as she brought over a bowl of small wontons. She noticed someone slowly descending the spiral staircase and lowered her voice, “Be a bit nicer to him, Miss Shen.”
Shen Zhiyi also saw Pei Yu. He was descending the stairs with a downward gaze, striding neither fast nor slow, his hair, not properly combed, hung loosely, and lacked that usual sharpness. However, the pallor of illness was once again apparent.
Watching him distractedly for a moment, Pei Yu already approached her, touching her neck gently, “What are you spacing out for?”
“Nothing,” Zhiyi, aware of her lapse in composure, hastily turned and sat down at the dining table, “Do you want to eat something?”
“No need.”
Pei Yu didn’t eat anything but sat down by the dining table, lazily propping his chin, his gaze settling on her without moving away.
After a while, he poured her a glass of water, “To cleanse your palate.”
Having eaten a bit, Shen Zhiyi felt much more spirited and smiled at him obediently, reporting her schedule for the next day, “I need to do a night shoot tomorrow, so I probably won’t make it back to Huating.”
Pei Yu already knew this without her saying so and didn’t show it, feigning ignorance, “How late will you be working?”
“Probably past ten,” Zhiyi was unsure herself and hastily added, worried that he would wait for her, “I really can’t make it back.”
But to Pei Yu, her words seemed like an emphasis, as if he would force her to return; his expression cooled significantly, “As you wish.”
Without further ado, he went upstairs to rest.
The high heels Shen Zhiyi wore on the red carpet today were slightly rubbing against her feet, so she didn’t rest right away and asked the housekeeper for a Band-Aid.
“Don’t you need a doctor?” the housekeeper looked concerned, “It’s bleeding.”
“No need,” Shen Zhiyi smiled at her, “It’s not that much trouble.”
She spoke lightly, but the pain was significant, especially when lifting her legs to climb the stairs, always pulling at the wound. She was constantly afraid of ripping it further. Moving sluggishly, she didn’t notice the door on the second floor had opened.
Pei Yu came out and immediately saw her moving like a tortoise on the stairs. His eyebrows knitted together, “What’s wrong?”
Startled by his voice, Shen Zhiyi hurried her movements, “Nothing, I—”
“Don’t move.”
Pei Yu had already seen, his brow furrowing deeper, his tone cooling down.
It was strange, the two were not particularly close, yet he noticed her immediately?
Shen Zhiyi stood still, and the next moment, he walked over, effortlessly picked her up in his arms using the way one would carry a child, his palm steadily supporting the bend of her legs. She was so frightened that she quickly wrapped her arms around his neck, her face flush with embarrassment, “I can walk by myself.”
“Shen Zhiyi,” he looked somewhat helpless, giving her a half-profile, “You really know how to make me angry.”
Saddled with an unjust accusation, Shen Zhiyi remained silent, yet internally, she didn’t accept this blame.
She hadn’t done anything after all.
Now, she somewhat agreed with the butler’s words; Pei Yu did seem to be often displeased. How could he have so much dissatisfaction to express?
After setting her on the bed, Pei Yu knelt down to closely inspect her ankle. The wound was covered, but there were still red abrasions around it, noticeably striking against her fair skin. The longer he looked, the worse his expression became, “How did this happen?”

“The high heels rubbed against it.”
With her ankle in his grip, Shen Zhiyi felt uncomfortable and quietly drew back, “It’ll heal quickly.”
Not wanting to dwell on this topic too long, she asked, “Why aren’t you asleep yet?”
“There was something I forgot to give you.”
“What is it?”
Pei Yu was still crouched in front of her and slightly looked up, beckoning her, “Come here.”
Shen Zhiyi leaned forward, and from the corner of her eye, she saw him seem to take something out of his pocket. Then she felt a cool, heavy sensation on her neck, and the lustrous gleam of the Blue Diamond necklace entered her line of sight.
She stared blankly, “You—you were the one who bid for the finale item?”
She lightly touched the pendant with her fingertip, and Pei Yu casually responded, asking her, “Do you like it?”
This wasn’t a matter of liking or not. This necklace was worth eight hundred million; even selling Shen Zhiyi wouldn’t cover the cost. How could she dare to accept it?
She was almost ready to refuse immediately, but Pei Yu was looking up at her from her knees, his gaze calm and focused, waiting for her response. The butler’s words “be nicer to him” suddenly echoed non-stop in her mind.
Shen Zhiyi didn’t know what she was thinking—perhaps she wasn’t thinking at all—as she looked into Pei Yu’s eyes, the words on her lips took on a different shape.
She nodded, “I like it.”
What was the harm in accepting it temporarily? After all, she could always return it.
Pei Yu didn’t seem satisfied with the answer. He still gazed up at her attentively, his finger hooking the necklace and giving it a few shakes, his tone slow and light, “Then why aren’t you smiling?”
He wanted to see her smile.
The warm yellow light reflected into his dark pupils, filled to the brim with her silhouette. His demeanor when asking seemed not much different from usual, yet strangely it made Shen Zhiyi feel utterly unaccustomed.
Unaware to herself, she really did smile at Pei Yu, a surge of impulse urging her to lean forward and place a gentle kiss on his lips, “Thank you.”
At that moment, she truly was happy, but it was not because of the necklace.
This man, having gone to such lengths, just wanted to see her smile.
Seeing her genuinely smile, the frigid look on Pei Yu’s face finally faded completely. The hand hooked around her necklace tightened slightly as he kissed her fervently, the innate dominance within him surfacing once more, not allowing her to pull back.
An overwhelming scent of Agarwood filled the air, much like his overwhelming presence. Shen Zhiyi clutched the hem of his shirt, feeling suddenly bewildered.
She couldn’t understand him, couldn’t see through whether he was a master of romance, adept in strategy, or if he was just so attentive to anyone when the mood struck him, based solely on his whims.
