Echoes of the Wild: Tales of a Beast Tamer-Chapter 26: The Evolution (1)
Chapter 26 - The Evolution (1)
(Chris's PoV)
To compete in the academy exam and come out with better results, I need to upgrade my rank to bronze as soon as possible.
To make that possible, upgrading Snow to Bronze is the only way. Even after that, I may not reach Bronze rank but I would be close enough to reach the rank.
The reason I needed to be at Bronze was that it would facilitate me to bond with another pet.
The skill that Snow gave me was a weird one. At first, I thought that it was useless but it was already late when I found out how useful that was.
Like Snow's talent, I too can improve while sleeping but unlike Snow, the improvement is minimal.
For Snow that was a talent but for me it was a skill. So, there are a lot of differences in what we gain from that. Also, before I sleep, I need to cast that skill.
I didn't understand that skill back then. So, I didn't pay much attention to that and even forgot a few times to cast that. Only when I saw that my growth was better than it should be, I understood that the skill was the reason but by that time a lot of days were gone.
If only I knew that from the first.
Snow could have told me but she can't speak, at least not human language.
She can understand my commands whether I speak directly or mentally but she can't speak back. I can understand what she was trying to say to me from her actions but how can she show in her actions what she wanted to say about the skill?
There was no way to know that.
So, I have to learn about that in my own way and that wasted a few days.
---
Anyway, though that skill was useful, it was neither an attack skill nor a defence skill. So while fighting, I would be a sitting duck, an easy target for the opponents.
Snow can't attack the enemy and protect me at the same time. I need to find a way to protect myself. I can dodge again and again but with attack or defence skills that would be very difficult as the opponent wouldn't let an easy target go.
Since Snow is my tamed beast, as long as I was dead, the fight would end after.
It's not like the tamed beasts die after that, but the death of the beast tamer would cause damage to the beasts similar to how their deaths would cause damage to the tamer.
So it is best to avoid death.
The best way for me is to get new skills to contribute to the attack or at least be able to defend myself.
To get new skills, I need a new pet to bond and that would only be possible for me if I reach the Bronze rank too. For that to happen first Snow has to be upgraded to Bronze Rank, which is not all difficult for me.
---
When a pet reaches the peak of Iron rank, they would be eligible to upgrade to Bronze. It can happen naturally or tamers can help them to fasten that.
Out in the wild, beasts have no way but to upgrade naturally which takes a long time.
With the help of tamers, the tamed beasts upgrade faster than beasts in the wild.
To help them upgrade, a lot of resources are needed. Moreover, when they upgrade they would go through evolution, which is a painful process.
A beast with a strong soul can go through that and come out unscathed but a beast with a weak soul may fail, sometimes even die in the process.
This is the reason why so powerful beasts who attained greater intelligence would bow to humans to become their pets.
When bonded with tamers, the soul of tamer would be considered as a part of the beast. It would help the beast to achieve success during evolution to a higher rank and also increase the chances of mutation.
When beasts upgrade their ranks, they go through evolution. Their bloodlines would get purified every time they go through these evolutions. It was because of these evolutions that they had to go through, that they had to face a lot of pain.
During some of the evolutions, they may mutate.

The mutation may be good or bad, it depends on the situation but to many mutation is good. It means a new path is open for them to traverse through.
Through mutations, the beasts would get skills that normally that race of beasts wouldn't possess.
For example, let's take Snow.
Snow is an Ice Fox. So, usually, the skills she would get would be related to Ice or Water elements as Ice is considered as a mutation of water element.
If Snow undergoes mutation, it can get other elements or skills that Ice Foxes wouldn't get normally.
Also, mutated beasts would sometimes get more than one skill after ranking up if they mutate during that rank-up, but that would be only for that time. After that, either skill belonging to the original self or mutated self, only one would show per every rank up.
Unless they mutate and mutate again whenever they rank up, there would be only one skill for every rank up. It was almost impossible as it was something that no one ever heard of.
Of course, there is a saying, "There would always be a first", and one day there could be a beast that mutates every time it ranks up, but the chances of happening are very low.
---
Anyway, mutation may happen or not and a mutation every time, it entirely depends on luck. I can't influence that.
So, for now, I should only concentrate on upgrading Snow as that would give her one more skill and also a chance for me to get another pet soon.
So, it's better to do that tonight after having dinner.
It would burn a lot of energy. So doing the evolution on an empty stomach is not a good idea. Also, I need to stack up some food reserves before I start the evolution.
