Chapter 439: Chapter 439 - Twisting Things To Fit Needs

Instead of seeming dismayed by her answer, I calmly began braiding three cleaned strands of intestine together. Twisting them into a rope that would dry into something tough and chewy when I put it in the dry air exchange floor.

> Should also make some strips of meat to turn into jerky. <

"If you want my help testing dangerous things like that, then let me be the one in danger."

"I can quite literally regenerate. What danger is there?"

Her voice up close and doubled over the earpiece is strange. Very slightly delayed so it sounds like it echoes from a distance, even though there is not really much between us.

"Fire isn’t poisonous to us like silver, but burn damage is not a laceration, Citra. Your body has to replace all of the tissue. Not just knit things back together."

"But my body can still do this and all it will be is transient pain. You’re being very informative today about matters, though. I take it by the tone of your voice, you’ve probably walked through fire in the past to test this explanation of yours?"

"Fire rescue is part of our pack’s mandatory training. Werewolves tend to dislike rushing headfirst into flames, like most beasts. Even Omegas. Which means we have to get them used to it for emergency situations."

Humming my understanding as I finish the first of three toys for Asha, I hang it around her neck before starting another. Without thinking too much about using her as a piece of furniture.

Normally, I might be a bit annoyed at being *protected* to the point I lose autonomy... but I’m actually not. Maybe it’s because I got another good look at how terrible it is to see someone you love hurt and recovering.

> I mean, like. Care for. Someone you care for. Yes. <

I think my regeneration is stronger than hers anyway. And there’s no guarantee the Lunar Goddess’s blessing didn’t give effects I haven’t figured out yet. If I’m to be testing how Tolerance works for the others, it would be better to have one of them that I trust do it.

One who is a werewolf.

Which limits my choices between her, a doctor I’ve annoyed but who owes me for granting her the Monitor ability, a teenage wolf I should check up on soon, and a turquoise-eyed tan-skinned native I’m not sure how to deal with now that she knows I really had ’magic’ powers.

Of all of those options, I’d rather feel guilt towards Kyrie. She’d be the most fun to... make it up to. Besides, if we test it soon... I can sneak my hand in the fire while she does it!

Teach her to tell me *no* so firmly. Either nothing will happen together - or we’ll burn together!

> ...Unless I’m immune to fire and she is not. Eh. I’d still rather no one know that but her, if that’s how it works out. <

"Lodestone: Alert Claire."

A few seconds after she speaks, that background tone in my ear shifts again. Back to how it was before. Must be something to do with electronics or technology when we are connected on the channel her assistant is monitoring?

"What’s up boss?"

"Can you send someone up to collect the hide from us? It needs to go somewhere warm for processing."

"Air exchange floor will work. Webber was talking to her about that already. I have some people in mind that can handle it."

"The brain is still in the head, whoever ’handles it’ will need to be able to deal with that."

"My list just got shorter. Uh... oh, he will work. Lou Gold. That visitor from the Goldtooth pack down in the bayou. Been asking about trying to reclaim leather from dead animals anyway. Excessively. Not creepy at all. Give me ten minutes to send a runner to his location."

I wasn’t entirely sure about entrusting the task to someone I’d never met, even if he had Claire’s... was that even a mark of approval? It didn’t sound like one.

"Make sure he knows that it is mine, for my son, and that if he messes it up I will be most displeased."

"What she said. For me as well. Word for word."

"...Don’t steal my words."

She stands after I rebuke her, knife in one hand and a cut of meat in the other. Holding them out wide, with corded gut still over her neck. While she leans down... in something of a grim curtsy.

"Understood, Mistress. I’ll endeavor to be original when I am agreement with you, henceforth."

"Alright, you two are back to flirting. Leaving the channel before I get diabetes. Or jealous."

> I don’t want to be known as the woman that makes the Alpha call her Mistress, either!

"You know what? Just the last part. Asha here is already too sweet he’s rotting my teeth, yes you are-"

Picturing my son reacting to her in that moment, now that he occasionally opens his eyes, I grow flustered for a different reason. Looking over our work, I tried to take stock and assess if we can just wrap it up for now. 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖

"That’s... a lot of products to store. I don’t think I’m getting my storage slot back."

"We could let most of the meat freeze. Or take the parts you care less about feeding to him down to the kitchens. Or... knowing you, you could probably eat half of it yourself in the next few days."

"...Why are you teasing me so hard today?"

Instead of answering immediately, she begins to push everything into a closer pile on the tarp. Begins folding the whole thing over into a ’bag’ and zip tying it together. Well, that’s one way to move most of it at once... and keep the wind off of it a little.

"Because I’m in a good mood and I’m trying to bring yours up too. Put this bag away. I’ll go down first. Into the executive kitchen, and take it out. We can try out your idea of relaying items over distance."

"Not your apartment?"

She smirks at me again. I swear, eventually I’ll get used to those. Without wanting to cover them with my own lips. Possibly. Someday.

"You’re already using my fridge and it doesn’t have enough space for all this. This room has multiple cooling and freezing units. And a blast freezer, if you’d like to use it."

"All of that sounds like a lot of valuable power being siphoned for the privilege."

"It wasn’t being used. I only turned them on this morning when I first went down, so that they would begin to reach safe temperatures for you."

That doesn’t change my thoughts! I’m not sure how to do it, but I’ll have to see about taking over providing energy for it. My powered container can surely handle a few more appliances, it’s still barely taking on any percentage of its potential.

"How thoughtful. Could you not have informed your assistant ahead of time so that she could tell me?"

"She knew. I told her she could tell you."

"Could. That *there* is the problem, Pyārī. You gave her the opportunity to ignore the order because she thought it would be more amusing this way."

"I’ll endeavor to-"

"Don’t. Just don’t. Go on, go down, leave me up here and alone for a few minutes. Your good mood is intolerable."

I watched her gather her military hardware by holding onto some sort of handle on the lower back section of the carrier vest. Then waited until she was almost out of sight, opening the stairwell door, before calling her name.

"Kyrie. After we finish moving everything... would you like to share a shower? To conserve water."

"That sounds very thrifty, Princess. Though the excuse is silly. The showerhead’s water can only hit so much surface area at a time, either way."

> Why is she applying logic to what I just said? I just didn’t want to be alone for *more* than a few minutes... <

"If you didn’t want to, then just say so. No need to be smart."

"Looking forward to it, actually. I’ll be back up as quick as I can."

A short salute and she literally... jumped through the doorway. Forcing me to grumble without heat into the earpiece that I know she can still hear me through.

"...Calling me silly, who is the silly wolf here?!"
