For a moment, Noah almost forgot the purpose behind checking his notifications. If this was indeed a game, then he had seemingly broken it on the very first day. The increasing number of skills was becoming difficult to manage. Comparing his current skills and stats to those from when he first awoke that morning gave him the impression of being a pay-to-win character.
Despite the unsettling details, especially concerning the ring, Noah came to accept them. Did he have anything left to cling to in terms of his humanity? Fleetingly, the thought of Ailetta crossed his mind, her image momentarily clouding his judgment. But as quickly as she appeared, she faded into the background, his bond with his creatures felt more genuine than anything he could have with her. He didn’t have to doubt whether they would stand by him or have any hidden intentions.
His shock lingered longer than he desired, especially when he saw the penalty for Grim’s death. It served as a depressing reminder of his purpose here.
Soon after, a determined glint flashed in Noah’s eyes. "If I had no guarantee of turning this around before then now at least I won’t let Grims death be in vain..."
He shifted his gaze to the stone ball still clenched in his palm. His initial impulse urged him to enhance his most trusted skill, Killing Instincts. Yet, a nagging doubt crept into his mind, would strengthening it hinder his ability to tame the wolf? And with his diminished stats, could an upgrade alone be enough to overcome the resilient beast’s tenacious regeneration, its wounds healing with each passing moment? Uncertainty clouded his thoughts; he would prefer a skill that would be reliable in any situation.
Noah suspected that he would have other opportunities to obtain another upgrade stone to enhance the skill after this encounter. His thoughts shifted to the mysterious shop keeper; with its wide variety of choices he could choose from, something told him that he would definitely find some there.
’This could work then!’ He thought to himself before he strengthened the grip on the stone, deciding to upgrade a skill.
[Immortal Body level up confirmed to Level one! The skills level up has increase the passive stat increase from 5% to 10%]
[Your spirit has reached 100 stat points, your skill ’Taming Proficiency’ has leveled up, providing you a 20% increase in taming a creature.]
’Wait...’ Confusion spread across his face. ’Skills gained this way can level up without the stones? Now it feels as if I’m actually being rewarded for choosing to throw away my humanity!’
"NO! Ailetta! Don’t go, there’s nothing you can do!"
"!"
The desperate cry shattered Noah’s deep contemplation, his head whipped around in response to see what was happening. He hadn’t expected to become so distracted, but thankfully the yells caught his attention.
When he looked over, at first, he didn’t see Arachne. His heart thumped loudly with fear, its pounding drowning out all other sounds, dreading that something horrible had happened to her.
He only saw the werewolf clutching Paul in its mouth, attempting to chew through his hardened ability and was slowly succeeding. But whenever it focused on the human in its mouth, two people with spears attempted to flank it while prodding their spears into its hide. The duo consisted of Bailey and Blake; Blake would only approach when Bailey grabbed the wolf’s attention, which she managed to do surprisingly easily. Each time she went in for a stab, her spear emitted a loud vibration before drilling into its target.
The two were coordinating extremely well together, but it was Blake’s tamed squirrel that proved to be the unexpected hero. Despite its larger size, to the wolf, it was still just a small rodent. However it didn’t expect for the squirrel to climb atop of its head and burrow its two huge knockers into its skull.
Though their efforts slowly inflicted damage, anxiety etched their expressions, betraying their concerns for Paul’s safety.
"Arrrggh!"
They heard another grunt, comparable to a scream coming from Paul within the werewolf’s jaws. Desperation fueled their efforts as the group increased the tempo of their attacks, but their attempts proved futile against the beast’s tenacious physique.
Bailey’s intense sweating and dilated pupils reflected her growing anxiety. With a frantic gesture, she looked up towards the ceiling, her action understood to all but Noah.
"Please help us! We are friends of Noah! Your tamer! What would he think if we died?" ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom
As she screamed toward the ceiling, Arachne, having escaped from the werewolf’s relentless attacks, pondered the words spoken by the female food that couldn’t be eaten.
Arachne didn’t know how her master would feel if they died, the only conflict she felt was the display of her own weakness. She should be a queen, commanding power and dominance, yet here she was, forced to flee. ’Maybe’, Arahcne began to consider as she eyed all the rest of the food. The idea of using human food to take down the beast entered her thoughts, at least then she could demonstrate to Noah how powerful she really was.
Meanwhile, the rest of the group stood by, paralyzed by fear as they watched Bailey and her small group struggle to save their friend. They weren’t close to Paul, and they were too afraid to die; Even Mark chose to stay back, using the excuse that he never got the chance to rest, so he wouldn’t be of any help anymore.
In the aftermath of Grim’s demise and Arachne’s retreat, the werewolf had managed to kill six more people from their group, leaving everyone too terrified to have thoughts of engaging the beast again. Had they not witnessed Noah fighting against such a formidable creature before, they might have truly succumbed to despair.
That’s when Jasmine saw Ailetta approaching the fight, panic surged within her, prompting her to scream for her to stop. Doubt clouded Jasmine’s mind; she couldn’t fathom how Ailetta’s skill could contribute anything meaningful to the fight, aside from perhaps reanimating one of the students’ corpses. But what good would that achieve?
Despite Jasmine’s frantic cries, Ailetta didn’t turn back. The way Ailetta continued to press forward made Jasmine unsure if Ailetta even registered her pleas.
Ailetta herself didn’t think there was anything she could do, but she felt the need to try, no...she ’had’ to try. She had witnessed Grim’s death and observed the impact it had on Noah. After Bailey pleaded for Arachne to help, Ailetta felt compelled to take action. While she didn’t particularly care if Arachne died, she couldn’t bear the thought of Noah experiencing such pain again.
With every step, Ailetta became more determined. The memory of her discussion with Jasmine resurfaced in her thoughts.
"That skill wasn’t a skill given to me by the system. It was one I was able to create, and afterwards the system gave me the option to integrate the spell with it or to advance it on my own..."
The phrase ’I was able to create’ replayed in Ailetta’s thoughts like a mantra.
She wouldn’t presume that just because Jasmine was able to create her own abilities despite her lack of fantasy knowledge then she could too. However, armed with the knowledge that it was possible, Ailetta believed that this was her chance.
Not only to prevent Noah from feeling any pain, but to also reaffirm herself that she too can become stronger.
As Ailetta halted before reaching Bailey, Jasmine exhaled a sigh of relief, assuming that Ailetta finally got cold feet and decided to retreat.
However, her relief was short-lived as she watched Ailetta spread her arms while clutching a simple small rod in one hand. The rod didn’t have any special characteristics besides increasing magic by two; Considering that, Jasmine just couldn’t understand what Ailetta was planning to do.
They all observed the familiar ritual of Ailetta activating her skill. A dark, tar-like substance materialized from thin air, hovering next to her. Jasmine anticipated the usual sight of the slime merging with another corpse, but to her surprise, Ailetta’s arms remained outstretched. Upon closer scrutiny, Jasmine noticed Ailetta’s body fidgeting while struggling to maintain her balance.
Traces of sweat emerged on Ailetta’s face, accentuating her visible frown, which deepened with each passing second as she attempted to activate her skill.
Ailetta pondered the nature of her skill. If zombies were considered undead, then theoretically, she should be able to control them as well. However, lacking practice with her skill, she couldn’t be certain. Despite her uncertainty, Ailetta proceeded with her skill, convinced that her thoughts were on the right path.
With determination fueling her, Ailetta drained her mana for everything she had, willing herself to force the continuation of her summoning. Normally when the slime was summoned, she would feel the disconnect from her mana supply. But instead of allowing that to happen, she focused on the feeling of her mana being drained, forcing herself to maintain the connection to compel the summoning to continue.
Gradually, the slime didn’t grow in size, but it began to emit a gaseous mist, enveloping it. With a sudden burst of energy, it darted toward the werewolf
As the gaseous mist emitted by the slime enveloped the werewolf, the creature briefly acknowledged the incoming threat. However, engrossed in the ongoing battle with the other attackers, it paid little heed to the seemingly harmless blob. When the slime made contact with the wolf’s fur and vanished, it went unnoticed by those unfamiliar with Ailetta’s skill, who deemed it a failure. The prolonged casting time and unassuming appearance of Ailetta’s summon left them underwhelmed, dismissing her efforts as a failure.
But then, something extraordinary happened.
"It....It stopped moving!!" Exclaimed a bewildered onlooker, their astonishment unmistakable as they watched the werewolf freeze in place.
Seizing the moment of distraction, Paul mustered every ounce of strength to crawl out of the werewolf’s grasp, collapsing to the ground in exhaustion.
"Paul!" Blake rushed to his side, offering assistance. Paul undid his ability, revealing a grim sight. The once pristine white scratches that formed from the werewolf’s merciless claws whilst his body was under the skill of his transformation; had now transformed into a multitude of small cuts, making him appear as if he went through a shredder.
Thump!*
With a heavy thud, Ailetta’s limp body collapsed to the floor mere moments after her exertion. The strain of manipulating a unique zombie proved too much for someone of her level and lacking in stats.
"Awhooooo!"
Jasmine’s heart constricted with worry for her friend, her eyes pleading for someone to come to Ailetta’s aid. She attempted to rush forward, but found herself held back by Mark’s firm grip. Mark was more than aware of the meaning behind the creature’s roar; he knew that the beast was no longer being controlled by Aietta’s skill.
"Ailetta! Somebody help her! Mark! We can’t let her die!" Jasmine continued to wail, her pleas dismissed by her brother whose only concern was for her safety.
Blake, meanwhile, focused on dragging the injured Paul out of harm’s way, determined to keep him safe. Bailey, torn between retreat and staying to assist, hesitated as she noticed the werewolf’s gaze fixed intently on the unconscious girl who had attempted to control it. Even as it howled, its eyes remained locked on Ailetta.
Bailey was prepared to give her all for the person that would sacrifice so much just to save her friend. However, her decision was abruptly interrupted when she noticed a bloody figure walking past her. For a moment she considered attacking, but only for a moment. As she met the gaze of those four dark, empty pupils, a wave of dread washed over her. She froze in place, her body tense, her voice caught in her throat. She felt a primal fear grip her soul, instinctively she feared that if she continued to look into his eyes that she would die.
Bailey released a sigh of relief as Noah passed by without acknowledging her, his attention seemingly elsewhere. No one else was conscious of Noah’s arrival until a loud domineering voice echoed in the room.
"Lay down mongrel!"
