Becoming a Monster-Chapter 49: You’ll always be Remembered
Chapter 49: Chapter 49: You’ll always be Remembered
At point-blank range, the webs Noah shot out connected with the King’s arm just as Noah dodged. The webs not only covered its arm but proceeded to travel to the King’s body, enveloping around its torso, linking it together.
Though not enough to fully impair its arm, unfortunately for the King, they weren’t taking turns to attack. A flurry of more webs made its way, encasing its upper body in webs. No amount of strength it possessed would help it release itself after losing its legs, especially when Noah’s own strength had seen a qualitative change.
With only one functioning arm and leg and a sword it could no longer wield, the King continued to struggle as it roared for help. But it forgot one important fact: a King is no longer a King when it has no one to lead.
As the group behind him were struggling just to stay alive, Noah was in the process of putting the king to rest.
The two stared into each other’s eyes for a moment that seemed like a lifetime to the ones fighting for their lives.
"Grrrrwww-"
The King roared one last time before its eye was pierced, the blade continued its merciless advance, piercing through bone and flesh until it reached the King’s brain.
The King’s eyes dimmed before the glow diminished, leaving behind two hollow sockets that were soon filled with blood.
In any other circumstance, this would have been the opportune moment for Noah to lend assistance to the werewolf. However, his skill wasn’t that easy to cancel out at will. There was a goal in mind that he had while he activated it, and before the skill can end, he must finish the goal that was set.
And so, he feast!
—————
The full extent of Noah’s struggle against the two monsters became apparent only when the others had to face one themselves.
The four groups from earlier, who had defended against the King’s minions, along with Mark’s group, stood together to potentially take down the werewolf. However, reality can be brutal.
"Nooo Kelsey!" A scream sounded among the clatter of heavy steps and screams.
A woman attempted to pry into the wolf’s face with her sword, underestimating the werewolf’s prowess. She Assumed the wolf was only as fast and powerful as the minions before it, but she soon learned otherwise. A massive claw, half the size of her body, slammed into her with a force that sent her hurtling across the room. The sickening sound of her body skidding across the rows of seats left her nearby friend frozen from shock. As she struggled to regain her bearings, the darkness closed in around her, and the scent of unfamiliar liquids filled her senses.
Confused and afraid, she moved about before she smelled something so abhorrent that she couldn’t help but gag in response. Before she could comprehend the source of the foul odor, she felt space around her being constricted. By the time she realized she was in the werewolf’s jaws, she was already being swallowed whole.
Jasmine, witnessing the tragic fate of the girl in the distance, couldn’t help but wonder about the terrifying power the monster Noah was confronting alone wielded. ’If this beast is this powerful then....how powerful is the zombie Noah was fighting all alone?’ Originally, she had tagged along despite not being able to utilize her magic, believing she could at least contribute by taking on the regular zombies.
However, seeing the werewolf outnumbered yet still running rampant around them, alongside with witnessing the girl being devoured; Jasmine found herself unable to muster the courage to risk her life.
Mark wasn’t any better. He didn’t have the mana to contend against it. His sword could inconvenience it, it was no better than a mere toy against the towering werewolf. Without his aura to sharpen the blade, he had no hope of actually inflicting any significant wounds. The situation would have been dire if it weren’t for the three formidable fighters holding their ground against the creature.
"Everyone....behind...me..." Paul stepped up again, with a battered shield in hand and his axe in the other. Unlike his appearance before, something seemed different about him. His entire appearance, from his rugged shield to his very form, seemed to have transformed into jagged stone. It was as thought he had become a living statue.
Screeeeech!*
The sound of claws scraping against stone echoed through the gym as the werewolf launched itself at Paul. With a deafening screech, it raked its claws against his shield, sending sparks flying and leaving faint, white scratches on his rugged stone figure. To the amazement of onlookers, Paul stood firm against the werewolf’s ferocious might.
Clang clang clang!*
His tenacity nearly led to his downfall as the Werewolf relentlessly rained down attacks, seemingly using him to sharpen its claws. Paul’s demise seemed inevitable until Grim and Arachne intervened.
Grim seized the opportunity, leaping onto the creature’s back and viciously striking its bladed arm into the wolf’s spine repeatedly, mirroring the mad image of his master. Meanwhile, Arachne attempted a tactic she had previously failed to execute against the king, sinking her fangs into the wolf’s hind leg. This time, before leaping, she left a strand of her webs tethered to the ground while ensuring a firm grip around the wolf’s legs.
She learned a lot from watching her master’s fights. Being a jumping spider, she couldn’t instinctively use her webs as a form of attack like Noah could. But that didn’t stop her from trying to become more innovative. Arachne just hoped her poison would prove more effective this time. Unfortunately, the werewolf’s robust healing ability nearly nullified the venom’s effectiveness, unless administered in a larger dose.
Roaring in agony, the werewolf momentarily ceased its attack to confront Grim. With arms nearly longer than its body, it effortlessly reached behind to crush Grim like the bug he was.
This was the moment Arachne waited for.
Whoosh!*
Arachne, utilizing all her strength, leaped back and harnessed the power of her webs to yank the werewolf’s back foot, forcing it to dig into the ground for resistance. Despite her efforts, she couldn’t drag it far before the creature tore through the ground to anchor itself before trying to free its hands to tear Arachne apart.
While this went on, the rest of the group hesitated to assist. They felt inadequate to do anything in the face of danger. Tragically, this hesitation resulted in a loss of life.
Grim, fearless and undeterred by the werewolf’s menacing presence, couldn’t resist the temptation of the exposed neck when he saw the creature pulled to the ground. With an impulsive leap, he went in for the kill.
With no other targets to divert its attention, the werewolf’s gaze fixated on Grim like a hacker’s aim assist, its mouth widening to clamp down on Grim’s body.
"!"
The scene unfolded in chilling silence as everyone watched in terror, seeing Grim’s lower half protruding from the werewolf’s jaws before disappearing in its jaws. The sound of crunching echoed in their ears, instilling a haunting realization that they were one step closer to losing their lives.
"UUURRRRGGFHHHHHH!"
Suddenly, a cry so painful and agonizing grabbed everyone’s attention. When they looked in the direction of the cries, Noah was holding his head while he continued to wail in pain. His body collapsed onto the lifeless form of the King he had been feeding on just moments before.
Grim’s death inflicted a profound shock upon Noah’s soul, catching him unprepared. The abrupt severance of their mental bond left him feeling as though his mind had been torn in two. The pain awakened him from his trance, consumed by agonizing pain and confusion. With one eye tightly shut while the other half opened, his two usable pupils searched for the cause, for some reason there was a blinding light obscuring his vision, making it difficult to see. He attributed it to the pain and slight dizziness he was experiencing. Squinting harder, Noah eventually discerned Grim’s remaining limbs and the ominous sounds of the werewolf feasting.
The pain was still there but the sense of loss numbed Noah to whatever painful experience he was inflicted with. Gradually, the grief he was being overcomed by was being replaced by a rising inextinguishable anger.
It wasn’t anger towards the werewolf, it was actually directed to the group of people who watched everything happen, the people who were ’still’ watching! Their continuous uselessness, which resulted in Grim’s death, is what truly incited his resentment."
Grim died, his death felt utterly meaningless, yet Noah held onto one certainty. Although he didn’t bear witness to Grims final moments, Noah was sure that Grim faced his fate with the expectation of winning. But what about them! Although he knew it wasn’t their fault and understood they couldn’t be expected to risk their lives for his creatures, but to him, they were directly responsible for Grims death.
Impulsive thoughts circulated through his mind, the act of helping the werewolf kill everyone here was slowly winning over his inner consciousness. However, Noah faced another problem: the werewolf was unsatisfied with just killing one of his creatures, now he was going after Arachne!
Despite this, the group still seemed content to merely observe. Noah tried to stand, but he felt sluggish. His movements were a lot slower than before, while his strength diminished greatly. If he was once a super being, he now felt as ordinary as any human. He didn’t like this feeling, but at the same time he couldn’t let that stop him. His body came to this state after Grims death, how would he feel if Arachne died? Would he become weaker! Would he die?
Struggling to his feet, a sense of desperation engulfed Noah as he brainstormed ways to aid Arachne. Initially, his eyes flickered with greedy ambition, a subtle desire to replace grim for the werewolf entered his thoughts, but his weakened state forced him to think of another alternative? Instinctively, his body started to move, motioning towards a weapon. He found himself approaching the side of the king’s corpse, eyeing the deathly sword that ominously radiated a subtle aura reminiscent of the king after its transformation.
As he took a step toward the King’s sword, a sudden thud brought him to a halt. Noah kicked something heavy, looking down, the blinding light intensified. He was astonished to see a chest glowing brighter than any he’d encountered before. Without needing a closer look, he recognized its superior grade.
"Maybe...just maybe..." Glancing back towards Arachne, who was dodging the werewolf’s attacks. He abandoned the impulse to perform his ritual of slowly opening the chest, despite it being the first platinum chest he had received so far. A chest of such rarity would normally lift Noah’s spirits above the clouds, but now he could barely feel a hint of that excitement when he had so much at stake.
As he opened the chest, he saw the contents resting above the largest pile of gold he had ever seen in any of his previous loot. Among the gold, he spotted a sword bearing a resemblance to the bone wielded by the king, the aura emitted was just as sinister but lacking in intensity. This sword looked extremely sharp to the touch, contrasting with the dark gray tone of its bone-like material. Whether it was truly bone or not was irrelevant at the moment.
His attention shifted to the three shiny objects within the chest. One was an obsidian black ring engraved with dark green alien writing, faintly glowing. Though unaware of its purpose, his desire for a power to overcome his current odds allowed him to unhesitantly place the ring on his finger.
When he equipped the ring, the ring melded into his finger, unleashing a rush of foreign energy that invaded through his entire being, for the shortest time, all the veins in his body glowed bright green at once before returning to normal.
’But what did it do??’ He didn’t care what the ring actually did as long as it could help him. With no clue of what the glow signified unless he checked his stats, he reached for the next shiny object; a white orb, notably larger than the one he had obtained before.
[+10 spirit]
Instantly, he was rewarded with a surplus of attributes. However, despite the more than acceptable increase, a frown lingered on his face. While the loot from his first platinum drop could be deemed satisfactory, it wasn’t enough to overcome his situation.
’Come on, I need something big!’ Noah obsessively muttered as he reached for the last object emitting a glow.
What he picked up was a small, round, grey metal ball, about the size of a billiard ball. Etched into its center was the number one, sparkling with a white aura. Noah didn’t know what the ball was or what it did, but he had a strong feeling that it must be special.
He tried squeezing it, but nothing happened. Even using both hands produced the same result. Just as he was about to consider putting it in his mouth, he became aware of the blaring prodding in his head separate from his pain and dizziness.
’Right...if this doesn’t have anything then I don’t know what to do.’ Noah resigned himself, taking one last deep breath before checking the reason for his notifications. Hoping it held the answers regarding the mysterious ball in his hands.
