Alpha's Hidden Precious Luna-Chapter 31
Lily POV
Celeste walked up to the car, and my eyes lit with hope as I reached for the door of the car.
“You can come sit here,” I offered.
“Don’t worry,” she scoffed with an amused smile “I just wanted to stop by for a second to greet my caring brother,” her lips twisted with sarcasm as she turned around and went to the driver’s side of the car.
“Since you don’t think it’s necessary to check up on you... let me do that for you. How are you, Alpha Kai?” she asked.
“I’m not taking you,” Kai responded coldly. “You have your car,”.
“For a moment, I thought you had changed,” Celeste clucked her tongue... “I guess, Lily is an extra special girl,”.
My cheeks turned red in embarrassment as I played with my fingers. I didn’t think of myself as that but it felt so nice to be referred to as that. After Celeste left, Kai tried to start the car again while I sat tersely, my mind racing.
I could still feel Briella’s cold eyes on me, and now sitting beside Kai, the tension only grew thicker.
“Hi,” Briella called out in a sing-song manner as she leaned over the car, her gaze meeting with Kai whose expression had turned cold. “Can I join you home? I don’t have my bus card on me – didn’t know I was supposed to get one. I’m still getting used to this place, she sighed,”.
“No, Briella, you cannot come with us. I am working right now, and having you is a distraction I cannot afford... so... find a way or call a cab. You know about that right?”
“I don’t and I don’t care,” she rolled her eyes. “You know, I’ll be delighted to spend the rest of your day with you. Not like I have anything serious to do at home anyways and your mother said we should spend as much time as we can,”.
Her gaze locked onto mine; her displeasure was obvious.
For a moment, I thought Kai might refuse, but he simply nodded, a resigned expression on his face. “Fine, get in,”.
“Thank you dear,” she squealed in delight before turning to me, displeasure written all over her face. “Can I have the passenger seat? It has a lot of room space and just now, my legs were cramping really bad. I would have loved to go to the back seat... but I can’t now,”.
I opened the door, willing to give up my seat when Kai’s voice reached us.
“What do you think you’re doing? Briella, Who told you you can sit anywhere you want? This is my car, not yours. If you won’t go to the back seat, then leave already, I don’t have all the time in the world,”.
Briella sighed and reluctantly went to the back seat of the car. When she had settled in, Kai leaned over and clasped my seat belt for me before he eased the car onto the road. I could feel Briella’s eyes shooting daggers at me.
After a few minutes, Briella broke the quiet, her tone clear and inquiring. “So, Alpha Kia... what exactly is this work you said you’re doing today?”
Kai’s eyes stayed focused on the road as he gritted his teeth in annoyance, I could tell he wasn’t enjoying being questioned. “Just helping a new member of our pack get adjusted to things,” he replied finally, his tone clipped.
Briella leaned forward slightly, her tone laced heavily with sugar and sarcasm.
“Oh, how considerate of you. It must be important if you’re involved personally,”.
Kai didn’t respond immediately, his gaze still straight ahead, his expression unreadable. I could feel the tension between them and wished I could disappear into the seat.
“By the way, we need to plan another date as soon as possible, Kai,” Briella continued rubbing it in my face with the casual way she was saying his name. “I was thinking we should go to a Chinese restaurant this week, I’ve been craving something spicy or there’s this couple’s retreat camp I saw online – something about making to-be mates bond better. The price is fair and I know it’ll be totally worth the money,”.
“We’re not married, Briella,” Kai said coldly “And I’m too busy to plan any retreat with you,”.
“But we’ll be married soon!” Briella said breezily, “You’ll see that we’re the perfect fit. Everyone would want to be like us and ... you know, Lily, it must be incredibly hard not having a wolf... how would you find your mate?”
My heart sank, surprised that the conversation had turned to me.
Suddenly, Kai marched the brakes of the car, bringing it to a screeching halt. Then he turned to face Briella in the back seat.
“Can we just have a moment of silence? If you cannot do that, you’ll have to get out of my car and find a way yourself. I hate it when someone talks too much,”.
“But I was just trying to ...” she trailed off, seeing the cold stare from Kai before she sighed with a pout. “Fine, I’ll stop talking,”.
Finally, we arrived at Kai’s office. Kai parked the car and got out, moving around to open my door for me before Emily could even unbuckle her seat belt. I caught a brief flare of irritation in Briella’s eyes before she schooled her expression into something more neutral.
Immediately, Kai’s assistant showed up.
“Welcome Alpha,” his assistant said.
“Tony, take Miss Briella to the waiting room and Lily,” Kai turned to me “Go wait for me in my office, I’ll join you shortly,”.
Briella’s eyes narrowed. “Surely, I can join you in your office, Kai. I won’t be any trouble, you won’t even notice, I’m there,”.
Kai’s expression remained impassive. “This is official pack business, Briella. It requires privacy,”.
For a moment, I thought Briella might argue but instead, she plastered on another dazzling smile.
“Of course, Kai. I understand completely,”.
“I’ll go to your office then, Alpha,” I murmured and Kai nodded.
I turned in the opposite direction and began to walk towards his office. Kai’s assistant immediately moved to Briella “Miss, if you’ll follow me, I’ll show you to the waiting room,” he said, his tone polite but firm.
As I walked away, I heard Briella mutter under her breath. “I don’t understand why a wolfless pack member deserves the Alpha’s attention,”.
The words stung, and for a moment, my steps faltered but I kept moving forward, refusing to let Briella’s words get to me. I quickly opened the door and closed it firmly; I didn’t hear Kai’s response... I didn’t think I would be able to take it.
