Chapter 42: Chapter 42: Gratitude

Ivy and Silas turned to look at Freya.

Just from the impatient expression on Freya’s face, they can understand just how much in a hurry she was.

"Mom, at least let us..." Silas began, but Freya cut him off, "I know, you both still haven’t eaten anything, right? Don’t worry, I have prepared food, just follow me. You can answer my question while eating. Or just eat in front of me, while I brief you both about the situation."

Silas: (ᵕ—ᴗ—) This is my mom. She was more worried about her discovery than her son.

"Alright." Ivy agreed before Silas could intervene. Freya shot a glance in Silas’s direction, then she said in a seemingly casual tone,

"You both have come here because of my work. No need to think you are freeloading. If you take out your own food, it would be equivalent to insulting me."

With that, she walked away.

Ivy’s eyes widened. Was this the same Freya who glared at her every time she saw Ivy?

"Let’s go." Silas’s voice broke Ivy’s daze, and she nodded with a complex expression.

Soon, both of them arrived inside the lab. The laboratory was huge, there was various equipment, and many of the researchers were busy with their work.

Freya led them to a group of researchers who were examining a young man.

Ivy stood at the entrance, and various memories flooded her mind. Her feet and hands turned cold. Her heart turned heavy.

Pain... the pain she had suffered before started to haunt her.

’Ivy, get a hold of yourself... You are not in your past life. Please...you can’t let others see how different you are...’ She reminded herself.

Silas paused, seeing Ivy not moving, and asked softly,

"Ivy? What happened?"

Ivy mechanically turned her head toward Silas and shook her head,

"Noth...Nothing...I... I just... feel a bit cold..."

"Cold?" Silas was worried and touched Ivy’s forehead.

When his warm hand made contact with Ivy’s scorching forehead, she flinched a little. Ivy quickly masked her reaction by standing still, but Silas had already noticed it.

"You are indeed cold." He concluded and swiftly took Ivy’s hand. Interlocking their hand, he stared at her,

"Ivy... if you are scared... just rely on me. I am here."

The warmth seeping out of Silas’s hand made Ivy’s panic vanish. Silas was the soothing balm to Ivy’s every injury.

Ivy didn’t pull away her hand. She was a human, not a machine, who could shut down her instincts.

Maybe she will gradually get over it... But she needs help before she reaches that stage.

’Just this once... I won’t get close to him ever again.’

Freya watched the interaction from the sidelines, her brows furrowed.

Once inside the lab, Silas felt Ivy’s body turning even colder.

"Ivy... you..." He began, but Ivy shook her head.

She was there to help Freya. If they left now, the entire trip would become a waste.

Nearing the group, Freya called out,

"Martin, I am back."

Martin Baker had silvery white hair, his faded blue eyes held wisdom he had accumulated during the 50 years of his life.

He nodded at Freya before glancing at Ivy, who squirmed under his gaze. Sensing her discomfort, the old man tried to put away his serious expression and... failed miserably.

Taking a deep breath, he said in his authoritative voice,

"Miss Ivy, can you please see this young man and tell if you know anything? His name is Oliver."

Ivy’s eyes followed the direction Martin was pointing, and when she saw Oliver tightly strapped to the bed, her eyes widened.

Her fear overtook her rationality, and she immediately moved to open the straps,

"What are you doing? You can’t experiment on humans! It’s forbidden! Release him now!"

Ivy’s furious voice stunned all the researchers. Ivy couldn’t care less about anyone’s opinion at the moment; she could only imagine just how much fear the young man named Oliver with platinum blonde hair and deep black eyes may feel.

"Hahaha!" Oliver’s laughter broke the tense atmosphere and froze Ivy in her tracks. She wondered if he had lost her mind due to all the experiments he might have gone through.

"Oh my god... I never expected Miss Ivy to be this interesting. Please calm down, I am doing everything voluntarily. In fact, I am a part of this research team." Oliver’s explanation made Ivy back away.

Silas, with a leisurely pace, reached Ivy’s location, interlocking their hands, making Ivy’s heart skip a beat. He said in a calm and steady voice as if he didn’t see Ivy’s intense reaction before.

"Mr. Baker, what were you saying?"

Martin knew it was Silas’s hint not to make a scene to question Ivy, and hence, he followed the lead.

"So as I was saying before, this young man here is Oliver. Just a week ago, he had brown hair and brown eyes, but now his hair color and eye color have changed. Do you have any idea?"

Silas frowned, "How can Ivy help you in this aspect? She is not a researcher."

Freya held her forehead and explained,

"Last time, Ivy had informed us to sleep during the rain, and we followed the instructions. I also had informed others to do the same. Turns out it became beneficial.

The rain was abnormal, and we call it Power Rain. If weak-minded or weak-bodied humans get drenched, they end up becoming zombies.

If any strong-willed humans get drenched, they might end up awakening a superpower. The people who didn’t let water droplets near them weren’t spared.

However, among them, only 30% became zombies. 35% of them remained ordinary humans, and 35% awakened superpowers.

What was even more surprising was the data we collected later. Almost 95% of the superhumans had minute to huge side effects.

Some after using their superpower felt extremely sleepy, or irritated. Some had headaches while some had acidity. The side effects varied.

5% Superhumans who remained unscathed were the ones who had slept in a warm environment and stayed away from the rain."
