Chapter 352: A Dirty Little Secret Uncovered

Edward called his assistant on the intercom and had her clear his morning schedule, once that was settled, he sat legs apart on his seat, his questioning gaze pinned on Sloane.

"What do you know?" He asked, in a way that made Sloane feel that he too knew something.

She pursed her lips, "Enough to give Malcolm and his family a bigger edge over the inheritance."

He let out a groan. "You found out about her, didn’t you?" He ran his frustrated fingers through his hair, "You found out Mallory isn’t Godfrey’s actual daughter."

Sloane took a swig of the alcohol, "How long have you know?" She flipped the question to him.

"I’m not a fool. Anyone with eyes could see how he treated her. It was suspicious to say the least. I didn’t need to probe too much to find out she wasn’t his kid." He stated, reaching for her wrist. "I have the resources, but you, how could you have known about it?"

She flattened her lips, "I have the wits." She stood in-between his legs, her fingers pinching at his jaw, "And, I just so happened to be lucky too. It was strange that Amanda would let a kid she hate own the Rosamund family heirloom."

Edward didn’t even seem to know that.

"I got suspicious, and found out something interesting about those sisters, Amanda and Rachelle. And about that Vance too..." her thoughts drifted back to the report she got from her private investigator.

*Flashback*

Staring at the DNA report she secretly conducted, she laughed. "It was worth it inviting those bastards to lunch." She recalled inviting Godfrey and Amanda for a catch up lunch.

The pair arrived thinking she had business to discuss, but she derailed the conversation to talks about the upcoming wedding, hiding her intentions.

After they left, she had the glasses they used confiscated and taken for testing. Getting Mallory’s DNA wasn’t hard, she tipped off one of the maids to acquire both hair samples and saliva.

She had tested it on a whim, but was glad she did.

"So, Godfrey and Amanda took in a runt that wasn’t even theirs." She frowned, "But whatever for, I wonder." Now that was the real mystery. 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂

Why her?

And why were they so desperate to get her married off?

At first, she imagined they wanted a share of the Grayson fortune, but she was seriously starting to doubt that.

"Ma’am, I’ve tracked down all the people who were in contact with the Rosamunds at around the time Mallory could’ve been conceived, and this is all I could find." He said, taking out another envelope.

Sloane carefully examined all the profiling.

"Vance’s dead parents, Godfrey’s late Uncle...and Rachelle, Amanda’s sister." She pinched her chin, trying to draw the link.

Mallory couldn’t have fallen out of the sky. Well, Godfrey and hidden her from the world for years, but still, she doubted he’d do that over a stranger’s kid.

"And this Vance kid-" she was saying, only to hold her tongue back when she saw his date of birth.

She tensed up. "Wait a second," she stared back at the date of the accident his parents had. "These numbers don’t add up."

The private investigator nodded. "That’s because the date of birth you’re seeing is the one I found from the hospital he was born at. Not the altered one on his identification card and driver’s license."

Now Sloane was greatly interested. "Vance is younger, younger than the accident. Godfrey’s cousin couldn’t have had him, not when they were already dead." She pointed out.

The private investigator reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded piece of paper, "Well, maybe that’s because his real parents are actually Godfrey and Amanda." He pushed the copy of the birth certificate he took off the hospital’s database.

Sloane twisted her lips into a devious grin. "Now, why would Godfrey go through all this trouble?" She picked up Rachelle’s picture, her eyes fixed on her eyes.

Her green eyes, the ones that mirrored Mallory’s.

The private investigator lectured in a monotone voice, "According to a testimony from a former maid, Rachelle apparently stayed at the Rosamund mansion longer than Amanda."

Sloane nodded. "Yes, I heard similar gossip before." She recalled Tara’s mother saying something about the same time she got her hands on the family heirloom. "She stayed even when Amanda and Godfrey were away on their honeymoon trip."

The private investigator went on, "Actually, I found out something that isn’t out for public disposal about Rachelle." He pointed at a piece of paper buried under the rest.

Greedily, Sloane picked it up, her heart racing at the information she paid a steep price to acquire. "A nursing home?" She raised a brow, "Rachelle used to be a care taker?" It sounded strange, that the popular designer whose bags were so hard to acquire used to work in service.

The P.I went on, "She was transfered from the nursing home to the Rosamund mansion, and assigned to the late Gareth Rosamund."

Now things were much more interesting than she imagined. "So Amanda’s sister was actually the one who introduced her sister to the Rosamunds, I would’ve thought it was the other way around."

"And what’s more, she only left the Rosamund household, after the death of Gareth." He pushed the timeline he had drawn closer to her, as if nudging her to realize something. Particularly of the picture of Rachelle wearing the pendant Mallory now owned.

Sloane squinted her eyes, trying to make sense of what was happening. And then, in the inkling of a second, her eyes lit up with recognition!

*Present*

Now sitting on his desk, her legs crossed, she said, "Mallory was born, around the same time Rachelle left, and the old man died." She said.

Edward nodded. "Since Godfrey is Gareth’s nephew, he took over the Rosamund business once his cousin and his wife died in an accident."

Completing his sentence, she went on, "He posed his kid as theirs, so Vance could have some claim over the Rosamund inheritance."

Edward smiled. "And as for Mallory, they hid it from her, that her actual father was none other than that sick old pervert, Gareth."

Sloane laughed, "Now I get why they wanted her gone as quickly as possible. Those bastards are trying to covet the wealth for themselves." She swirled the canister in her hand a bit.

"Godfrey must’ve planned the fire that killed his cousin to get the inheritance. I can’t even imagine the shock he must’ve felt when he learned that Gareth had a kid with his caretaker. That’s why he hid her from everyone, so no one would be none the wiser." Sloane went on to say.

"Well," he leaned in closer, his hands on her thighs, keeping her in place. "Just how far do you intend on blackmailing me for this?" His tone dropped, a maniacal look painted his eyes.

"And why shouldn’t I just kill you right here and now?"

But Sloane traced her fingers up his arms, and held the sides of his face. She leaned in gracefully and whispered softly into his ear.

"You’d kill the mother of your son?"
