Chapter 348: Chapter 348: Why Are There Poisonous Insects Here

The courtyard was quiet, eerily quiet. How could such a large courtyard be devoid of even the sound of an insect?

May Morgan looked around warily, feeling something was amiss. Though it was late autumn, the courtyard was lush with plants. There was no way they wouldn’t hear a single bug sound, right?

"What are you looking at?" Victor Grant turned to see May Morgan scanning the surroundings with a grim expression and asked worriedly.

May didn’t want to scare Victor; after all, nothing unusual had been discovered thus far: "It’s nothing, shall we go inside and take a look?"

She took a few steps ahead of Victor and was about to push open the redwood door when Victor quickly grabbed her arm, indicating for her not to move: "Don’t go in, those two people died in the living room!"

"Oh!" May casually shook off Victor’s hand and gently pushed open the living room door with her hand.

Sure enough, there were two broken bodies lying on the ground.

To call them bodies was generous; they were more like skeletal remains. The gruesome corpses were stripped of almost all flesh, leaving bare white skeletons lying there, with tattered clothes clinging to the floor, faint bloodstains on them, and beyond that, nothing more could be discerned.

May pointed at the two remains on the ground and asked Victor, "How do you know these are the people we’re looking for?"

Victor leaned in closer with his flashlight and gasped in shock.

"It doesn’t make sense. When I arrived, they were still covered in flesh, not like this!" Victor stared at the skeletal remains, already devoured by something unknown, and panicked: "Something’s not right, May, let’s get out of here!"

He clearly remembered that when he had first arrived, the bodies still had a lot of flesh on them. Now they had turned into these corpses after they left, consumed by something.

What could have devoured two whole people in such a short time? Nothing but that horrifying thing.

Victor grabbed May’s hand and started to lead her out. This place was too eerie; who knew if the insects that devoured the bodies hadn’t left yet? Why else would the courtyard be so silent?

However, just as Victor reached for the redwood door, something bit him fiercely, causing him to retract his hand in pain.

"What the hell?" Victor withdrew his finger to see a large piece bitten off his middle finger, blood gushing out, and the flesh torn away.

May gasped in surprise, quickly pulling out a tissue to cover Victor’s wound and pulling him behind her.

"There are poisonous insects outside, you got bitten by one!" May clenched her fist and cautioned Victor.

It was Victor’s first time encountering poisonous insects, and he said with some tension, "Had I known, I wouldn’t have let you talk me into putting down my gun. Now what? How do we get out?"

May turned to Victor and sighed in resignation: "You think the gun will solve it? There are only a few bullets in your gun. Who knows how many poisonous insects are out here now; how many can you handle?"

"So what do we do? Wait for the police to come?"

Victor asked again, feeling a bit frustrated.

Waiting for the police was one thing, but would the insects outside wait for the police to arrive before attacking them? Obviously not, for the moment Victor reached out and got bitten had already explained everything.

"We can’t wait." May sighed and suddenly pulled open the wooden door in front of her.

As soon as the wooden door opened, Victor clearly heard the hair-raising rustling of insects crawling outside. When they arrived, the courtyard had been silent, but now it was filled with the sound of insects creeping, making one’s hair stand on end just thinking about it.

"Look at your feet!" May directed the flashlight at the ground ahead, revealing it swarming with black insects.

There were many insects gathered on the bright path, not just poisonous insects, but other types as well, for unknown reasons joining the swarm.

Victor licked his bitten finger instinctively and abruptly pushed May behind him protectively: "Get behind me, I’ll make us a torch and cut a path through these bugs."

Saying this, he took off his coat, grabbed a stick nearby, wrapped it, and pulled out a lighter from his pocket to ignite his makeshift torch.

May looked at Victor gratefully. Truthfully, to stand in front of her in such a critical moment showed he truly was a man.

Once the torch was lit, Victor waved it towards the scattered poisonous insects outside, and surprisingly, those insects recoiled in shock at the sight of the bright torch, scattering quickly.

"This works, stick close to me." Victor turned and glanced back at May with excitement, motioning for her to follow.

May silently watched the poisonous insects retreat from the torchlight, sensing something amiss. These poisonous insects tonight weren’t fiercely aggressive, and it seemed no one was deliberately controlling them. Otherwise, they wouldn’t fear fire and retreat so easily.

"What are you waiting for? Let’s go!" Victor urged, seeing May still standing there, pulling her quickly outside.

The path outside was crawling with many insects. It was frightening, but under the torch’s attack, they quickly moved aside, not daring to approach.

Luckily, the courtyard was not large; in just a few steps, Victor and May reached the doorway. To avoid the possibility of insects on the door, Victor kicked open the dark wood door, surveyed the area, found the alley relatively safe, and hastily led May to the car.

They had just reached the car when the sound of police sirens echoed outside the alley. Seeing the police arrive, Victor quickly opened the car door and shoved May inside: "Stay inside and hide; I’ll handle this."

Two people were dead inside, and Victor, being the first witness, couldn’t avoid involvement. But May was innocent; he didn’t want her dragged into this.

The police quickly arrived, and Victor explained the situation inside to them. The officers had never heard of such a thing and thought Victor was joking, so they immediately entered with their guns drawn.
