Why Am I a Priestess When I Reach the Maximum Level?-Chapter 81[Vol. 6] - The Eve of Action
[Vol. 6] Chapter 81: The Eve of Action
The [Yokai Controlling Sect], as a vast and influential organization, has survived and grown even while being rejected by the secular world. Such success indicates that they must operate with extreme caution and well-established rules.
Much like hunting, no prey willingly allows itself to be captured or slaughtered. Yokai, being as intelligent as humans, can often sense danger and attempt various ways to resist the sect’s control.
It was clear that cases like the Mole Spirit’s were not unique. Since there had been similar incidents before, the [Yokai Controlling Sect] must have developed countermeasures. Violet had anticipated the possibility of someone lurking in the shadows.
That was one reason she had deliberately lured the Mole Spirit to this secluded spot, not just for the reasons she had previously stated, but also to confirm the location of any trackers more conveniently and precisely.
After all, while Violet couldn’t immediately distinguish who among them belonged to the sect, it was unlikely that any ordinary person would wander deep into an uninhabited forest at night for no reason.
As the hood was lifted, the figure’s true face was revealed. The creature, shrouded in a black robe that blended seamlessly with the night, was now exposed to Violet and the Mole Spirit.
The one who had been monitoring the Mole Spirit in secret turned out to be another Rat Spirit.
This Rat Spirit, however, was clearly more powerful. While it shared a small stature, its humanoid features were far more developed. Aside from the whiskers at the corners of its mouth that hinted at its origins, there was little left of its original form.
Although it hadn’t yet achieved the status of a fully transformed grand spirit, by cultivation standards, it was likely at the [Peak Ascension], equivalent to the so-called Earth tier on another continent.
Compared to the Mole Spirit, who hadn’t even reached Level 20, the difference in power was overwhelming. Sending such a strong spirit to track a Mole Spirit showed just how cautious the opposition was. But still, a Rat Spirit…?
“Little Mole, take a closer look. Do you recognize it?”
As Violet spoke, a glowing orb of light appeared in her palm, illuminating the figure’s face in the dim forest.
“This…”
The Mole Spirit stared at the Rat Spirit, whose throat was still firmly gripped. It twitched and struggled like a fish out of water, unable to utter a single word. The Mole Spirit’s already pale face turned even whiter.
“That’s… that’s Third Brother Tian! He’s one of the senior members of our Mole Gang, a Rat Spirit. His strength is easily among the top five in the gang, and he’s highly respected.”
“But… but Third Brother Tian has barely interacted with that human! Back when the Mole King wanted to take us to Yangyuan County, he was the one who led the opposition to the plan.”
“Even Third Brother Tian… I had actually considered asking him for help,” the Mole Spirit muttered, her voice tinged with disbelief.
Violet shrugged nonchalantly. “This is what you’d call a good-cop-bad-cop routine. The fact that you even thought of relying on him proves that their tactic works. It seems the extent to which your Mole Gang has been infiltrated is far worse than you realized.”
As Violet tapped her chin in thought, the Mole Spirit’s face grew increasingly uncertain, her earlier resolve replaced by confusion.
“Great Immortal, what should we do now?”
“Don’t worry. It’s a small issue, leave it to us.”
……………………………………
Time passed, and soon it was the next day.
A soft knock, so faint it seemed to hesitate in disturbing anyone inside, echoed from the door.
“Knock, knock, knock.”
Violet opened the door from within, revealing a petite girl barely over a meter tall, her short, black-gray hair framing her youthful features. Violet looked her over, then smiled as she gently patted the girl’s freshly changed, clean, and simple dress, nodding approvingly.
Little Mole, though diminutive in stature, wasn’t entirely childlike. Her short height was partly due to her nature as a Mole Spirit. In truth, her features were more mature than her small frame suggested, outshining her height in maturity. She almost resembled the kind of small dwarves found in old tales.
“Good morning,” Violet greeted warmly. “You’re adjusting quickly. Have you stayed at human inns before?”
“Good morning, Great Immortal…” the Mole Spirit replied timidly.
Violet reached out and lightly patted her shoulder, correcting her again with a patient smile.
“I’ve told you not to call me ‘Great Immortal.’ Didn’t we go over this last night? Have you already forgotten?”
Instinctively covering her mouth, the little yokai’s face, now clean and lightly groomed to reveal a delicate charm, showed a brief flash of panic before she quickly corrected herself.
“Miss Violet, um… I don’t usually spend much time in human living areas. I’m not really used to those soft, squishy beds humans sleep on. But if I have to, I can manage. I’ve slept on them a few times before…”
“Is that so? Then where do you usually sleep?” Violet asked curiously.
The girl scratched her head awkwardly, smiling sheepishly. “Haha… Mostly in burrows or on piles of straw. I like to rest in places where my whole body can be hidden. It makes me feel safer.”
“I see.”
No wonder, Violet thought, remembering how she had first found the Mole Spirit half-buried in a bush, awkwardly hiding everything but her rear.
Violet nodded, deciding not to dwell on the topic, which was clearly embarrassing for the girl. She led the Mole Spirit, now a temporary companion, downstairs to the main hall of the [Welcome Guest Residence].
The culture of the [Ancient Spirit Realm] was far more traditional and practical compared to those of the other continent. Without the convenience of magic or its various derivatives, lighting relied on simple candle flames. Walking through such surroundings often gave Violet the uncanny feeling of being transported to a society from Earth’s ancient past.
Like now.
Yet, unlike Earth, there was a fantastical scene unfolding beside her. A real, live little yokai walking by her side. The sheer impossibility of such a sight on Earth struck Violet as wonderfully surreal.
Though it was still early morning, the inn’s main hall was already bustling. Guests staying at the [Welcome Guest Residence] were preparing to depart, while others came and went, stopping for breakfast. The crowd was lively and diverse, some accompanied by their various spirit pets, while others were humanoid yokai moving freely among the people.
In Cangyun Town, humans and spirit pets seemed to coexist in remarkable harmony.
Bright sunlight poured into the hall through the windows and main door. Steam rose from freshly baked buns, blending with the cheerful chatter of customers, the loud calls of the inn’s staff, and the clatter of porcelain dishes. It was a lively, chaotic scene, yet it didn’t feel overwhelming or noisy.
At a table nearby, Ling Feng, Bai’er, and Murong Yun, who woke up early, were already waiting. Violet confidently led the Mole Spirit over to join them, taking a seat at the spot they had saved for her.
Two seats had naturally been saved at the table.
“Come, have a seat as well,” Violet said.
“Miss… Miss Violet, I wouldn’t dare…”
“When I tell you to sit, you sit. Don’t make me lose my patience, got it?”
“Ugh…! Y-Yes, as you wish…”
Seeing the Mole Spirit nervously perch on the edge of the chair like she was sitting on hot coals, Violet couldn’t help but feel confused.
Why was this little one so uptight? What was she so afraid of? Hadn’t everything been made perfectly clear last night?

Sensing Violet’s thoughts, Ling Feng, sitting opposite her, gracefully swallowed a spoonful of porridge before looking up with a gentle smile.
“Violet, the world of yokai is quite straightforward. They naturally equate strength with status. Think about it, if you asked an ordinary citizen to dine at the same table as their ruler, most would instinctively feel overwhelmed and terrified, wouldn’t they?”
“Such fear isn’t something that can simply be erased with a single ‘Don’t worry’.”
“You speak like someone with personal experience,” Violet remarked, though she didn’t press further.
Instead, she casually waved down a passing server, ordering two bowls of plain noodles. While waiting for the food, she got straight to the point.
“So, what’s the situation?”
By “situation,” she was referring to Third Brother Tian, whom she had caught last night.
Violet wasn’t particularly skilled in interrogation. Since Ling Feng and the others were much more experienced in such matters, she had left the task to them. After all, not everything could be handled by Violet alone.
Besides, Third Brother Tian was quite different from the [Black Mamba Venom] they had encountered previously in the [Tidal Deep Valley]. Although he was closely tied to the [Yokai Controlling Sect], he hadn’t been stripped of his consciousness and turned into a mindless combat puppet like the serpent had been.
Instead, Third Brother Tian seemed to retain his original intelligence or perhaps even all of it. Otherwise, there was no way he’d be entrusted with such a complex and adaptable task as surveillance.
