[Vol. 6] Chapter 79: The Ordinary Yet Extraordinary Little Yokai

As mentioned earlier, both the Mole Spirit and most of the members of the [Mole Gang] were yokai originally living near Cangyun Mountain.

Although they didn’t belong to any of the twelve peaks of Cangyun Mountain, and were instead part of a loose group in the area at the foot of the mountain, such yokai were quite common. In fact, they were the true mainstream in Xiangshou County.

These were considered “ordinary beasts” or “unaffiliated wandering beasts.”

They didn’t work with humans to become spirit pets, nor did they rely on human power and resources to cultivate. They also didn’t have a path leading them to join one of the twelve peaks of Cangyun Mountain. Instead, they fought hard at the bottom of society, struggling daily for the meager resources they could gather.

Though life was tough, the Mole Gang was relatively united. With the protection of their powerful leader, [Mole King], other common wandering spiritual beasts didn’t dare to bully the Mole Spirit too much.

Moreover, Mole Spirits tended to be solitary and rarely interacted with the outside world. After nearly a century of hard work since they first became sentient, their lives had settled into a routine, albeit still difficult.

However, strange things started happening in the past few months.

First, for some unknown reason, the [Mole King] suddenly gathered the members of the Mole Gang and told them he would take them to Yangyuan County in the Western Origin Spirit Kingdom to handle something.

Yangyuan County was located in the southern part of the Western Kingdom, far from Xiangshou County, which was in the center of the continent. The journey would take nearly a month, and naturally, the spiritual beasts or yokai didn’t want to leave their homeland to go to an unfamiliar place. Many of them objected or asked what the purpose of the journey was.

However, the [Mole King] was unusually firm about this matter. He didn’t explain anything and even said that if anyone didn’t want to go, they were free to leave the Mole Gang.

Because of his established reputation and power, the Mole Spirits of the Mole Gang had no choice but to reluctantly agree. They then embarked on the long journey to Yangyuan County.

Once they arrived, the [Mole King] and several other powerful Mole Spirits became even more secretive. They often disappeared for days at a time, and no one knew what they were up to.

As for the task at hand, [Mole King] only instructed the Mole Gang members to spread out, use their burrowing abilities to gather important information from all over Yangyuan County, and report back regularly. However, he didn’t say what exactly he intended to do with this information.

The Mole Spirit, being a member of the Mole Gang, was naturally assigned the same task as the others.

It was during one of her information-gathering missions that she accidentally stumbled into the official guesthouse in Yangyuan City, where she found the spiritual flesh hidden underground. By a twist of fate, she was caught by Bai’er and Violet at the scene.

After that night, the Mole Spirit returned to the Mole Gang but didn’t dare to tell anyone about what happened. She kept it to herself.

Soon after the earthquake in Yangyuan County, the [Mole King] returned from somewhere and gathered the scattered members of the Mole Gang. He told them that the matter was settled and they were to immediately return to their base in Xiangshou County.

Thus, the yokai found themselves inexplicably making a round trip, and after a few days, they returned to the area near their old nest.

The Mole Spirit didn’t understand what the important figures had done, as she was just a small yokai. But going home was a good thing, and she was overjoyed by it.

She thought everything was over, but things got even stranger afterward.

Not long after returning to their base, a human arrived at the Mole Gang’s den.

Yes, a human.

For a clan made entirely of yokai that rarely interacted with humans, this was a very unusual occurrence. Although they didn’t exactly have hostility toward humans and occasionally cooperated with them, allowing a human into the clan’s headquarters was not something that would happen lightly.

But the human had been brought in by the [Mole King], and for reasons unknown, several of the clan’s key members didn’t object. The Mole Spirits, though puzzled, didn’t raise much of a fuss, and the human was allowed to stay temporarily.

This person’s appearance was unusual, clearly not an ordinary individual. According to the [Mole King], the human was a famous alchemist whom he had invited to help the clan’s members recover from their exhausting travels during the previous mission.

While some of the members found it suspicious, the [Mole King] had led the Mole Gang for over a century, so no one, including Little Mole, dared question him too much. With the support of a few of the clan’s leaders, the members began taking the so-called “Body Strengthening Pills” provided by the alchemist in the following days.

Whether her spiritual energy had truly been strengthened or not was hard to say, but it wasn’t long before the Mole Spirit encountered other problems.

Previously, she had consumed some of the spiritual flesh, which had allowed her to accumulate a lot of spiritual energy within her body. She had planned to use this energy to cultivate and try to reach the next level. Recently, she had secluded herself many times for meditation and practice.

For cultivation, the most important thing is to have a clear and calm mind, staying focused and at peace. But for some reason, each time she reached a critical point in her breakthrough, she would suddenly feel dizzy, and her spiritual senses, which should have been focused, seemed to be blocked by some strange force, causing her efforts to fail.

After several failed attempts, the Mole Spirit realized something was wrong.

If it had been before, the innocent little yokai would have assumed the problem was with herself, thinking she might have made a mistake in her cultivation or accidentally consumed something harmful. She wouldn’t have thought to look in other directions.

But when they had discussed the origin of the spiritual flesh back in Yangyuan City, she had heard Ling Feng and Violet talking about the [Yokai Controlling Sect] and their methods of controlling beasts.

They specifically mentioned that when infiltrating certain small yokai groups, they would first take control of some of the key members and then use them to expand their influence.

This had left a deep impression on the Mole Spirit. So, after repeatedly failing in her cultivation, she couldn’t help but suspect that something similar might be happening to her.

Moreover, when they discussed the spiritual flesh, which was made by the [Yokai Controlling Sect] but was still an unfinished bait, Ling Feng had asked if she had experienced any unusual symptoms recently, and the symptoms he described matched almost exactly with what she had been feeling.

This made her even more suspicious. Thinking back to the strange behavior of [Mole King], the leader of the [Mole Gang], she realized something wasn’t right.

She was scared, but didn’t dare speak out too much within the clan. After all, she was just a low-ranking yokai, and this matter could be related to the terrifying [Yokai Controlling Sect]. She didn’t know how many of her companions she could trust, so she could only try to cautiously ask a few friends she was close to.

As expected, everyone, to some extent, had experienced the same issue but couldn’t explain why. They just thought their recent cultivation had gone off track and decided to take a break and rest for a while.

This frightened the Little Mole greatly.

She carefully began to observe the human who was staying in their hideout, and she noticed that not only did the person rarely leave, but he would occasionally meet with one of the stronger yokai in the clan under the pretense of helping with body recovery. These yokai were usually high-ranking and powerful within the Mole Gang.

At this point, Little Mole could almost definitively conclude that this human was the mastermind behind the strange behavior of the [Mole King] and the other yokai.

But even if she knew this, what could she do?

The Mole Spirit was too weak, and her friends in the Mole Gang were also weak yokai. Forget about resisting, escaping would likely get her noticed and even hunted down quickly.

She had considered asking the powerful figures of Xiangshou County or the leaders of the Twelve Peaks of Cangyun Mountain for help, but those were not the kinds of beings a lowly yokai like her could easily approach.

Her social circle was made up of other small yokai, and the chance to act was slim. If the higher-ups in the Mole Gang had already been largely corrupted, any rash move could lead to her destruction. So, she had been hesitating, unsure of how or whom to ask for help.

At this critical moment, she unexpectedly spotted Violet and her group, who had come to the foot of Cangyun Mountain and arrived in Cangyun Town.

To be honest, the Mole Spirit didn’t know much about them, but these people were strong, extremely strong. That was her instinct as a yokai, and she trusted it.

Furthermore, from the tone in their discussion about the [Yokai Controlling Sect], it was clear that Violet and her group were definitely enemies of this organization. With just these two pieces of information, they were already good candidates for the Mole Spirit to seek help from.

However, Violet and the others were outsiders. They had just arrived, and the Mole Spirit couldn’t fully grasp their backgrounds or their purpose for being here. She had planned to observe them for a while before making a decision.

But who would have guessed that once again, she was easily caught.
