Chapter 22: Chapter 22: Blaze Fairchild Is Just for the Child

On the day of Jenna Axton’s surgery, Luna Axton had no classes in the morning.

The classes had been arranged by Blaze Fairchild. After he and Kyle Joyce confirmed that Jenna Axton was having her surgery today, he agreed to let Luna Axton go to the hospital first and make up the class in the evening.

Luna Axton sat across from Blaze Fairchild, her head lowered as she chewed her food over and over.

She was waiting.

Waiting for Blaze Fairchild to leave for work so she could head to the hospital.

But Blaze Fairchild didn’t seem to be in a hurry to get to work today. After finishing his breakfast, he propped his hands on the edge of the dining table and asked her casually,

"Why didn’t you tell me about your mother’s surgery?"

’How was I supposed to tell him? Blaze Fairchild already paid the medical bills. I...’

Luna Axton realized what he meant. Blaze Fairchild was asking why she hadn’t *reported* it to him.

She immediately complied. "I’ll be more mindful in the future."

Blaze Fairchild said nothing, just watched her. He waited until she had drunk the last of her milk before speaking again. "Are you finished?"

She put down her glass and nodded. "Yes, I’m done."

Luna Axton felt that something was off about Blaze Fairchild today, but she couldn’t put her finger on what it was. She just sensed he was different from before.

"Let’s go."

Blaze Fairchild grabbed his jacket from the back of the chair and headed out.

Luna Axton couldn’t guess what Blaze Fairchild was planning, so she had no choice but to follow.

Mrs. Creed was standing at the door, holding Blaze Fairchild’s laptop bag in one hand and Luna’s canvas tote in the other.

Just as she reached for the tote bag, Blaze Fairchild swept up both bags with one hand.

Blaze Fairchild’s strides were as long as ever. ’What can you do when someone has such long legs?’

Luna Axton followed behind, replaying yesterday in her mind, trying to figure out the reason for Blaze Fairchild’s change in behavior.

But yesterday was the weekend. She had spent the morning at the hospital with her mother and the afternoon studying and reading at the dining table.

Blaze Fairchild had been busy in his study the entire time. The two of them hadn’t exchanged more than ten sentences all day.

’So why is Blaze Fairchild acting so different today?’

Her confusion persisted right up until he told her to get in the car.

"I’m going to the hospital," she stressed. "My mother is having surgery today."

Blaze Fairchild replied, "I’ll go with you."

Luna Axton had never imagined he would accompany her to the hospital. She froze for a few seconds before getting into the car.

Blaze Fairchild followed right behind her. The chauffeur closed her door, walked around the back of the car to the driver’s seat, and started the engine.

As soon as Blaze Fairchild got in the car, he started making calls.

"The ribbon-cutting ceremony this morning, have someone else go in my place."

"The eleven o’clock meeting, change it to a virtual meeting."

"The afternoon schedule remains unchanged for now."

Luna Axton sat on the other side of the center armrest, keeping her gaze fixed ahead, feigning perfect calm.

’So this is what happens when I don’t report to Blaze Fairchild in advance. It messes up his work schedule.’

’A ribbon-cutting ceremony and a meeting all in one morning... It seems Grandpa Fairchild was right, Blaze Fairchild is a very busy man.’

Blaze Fairchild put down his phone, pulled out the small tray table from the seat back, and set up his laptop.

Luna Axton glanced at his laptop screen. It looked like stocks, and the trend was upward.

Blaze Fairchild was working. Her gaze shifted to the view outside the car window.

It was Monday morning rush hour. A dense swarm of electric scooters crowded the service road, inching along slowly.

Every face was etched with anxiety, a stark contrast to Blaze Fairchild’s composure inside the car.

Luna Axton couldn’t have been more familiar with the route the car was taking. It was the way to the Hepatology Hospital.

When they arrived at the hospital’s inpatient building, Luna Axton finally couldn’t hold back any longer.

She called out, stopping Blaze Fairchild in his tracks.

Blaze Fairchild glanced at her coolly. "What is it?" His tone held a hint of impatience at her dawdling.

Blaze Fairchild was much taller than her. When he looked down at her, the pressure was immense, like Mount Tai bearing down, making her feel flustered and nervous.

"You’re busy with work. You don’t need to spend the whole morning waiting outside the operating room."

What Blaze Fairchild was doing went beyond the scope of their agreement.

’She didn’t quite understand. Why was Blaze Fairchild doing this?’

Hearing this, Blaze Fairchild’s gaze drifted to the pedestrians around them.

He wasn’t in the habit of explaining his actions to others.

But for the sake of efficiency, he explained with forced patience.

"My sole motivation for everything is the child."

Blaze Fairchild paused slightly, rephrasing to make himself clearer.

"Can you guarantee that you won’t panic if there are... complications with your mother’s surgery?"

’You’re the one who’ll have complications!’

’The surgery hasn’t even started, and Blaze Fairchild is already being a jinx.’

"I’m spending half a day here simply to ensure my child’s safety. You’re still in the early stages of pregnancy. Any emotional fluctuations could cause irreversible damage to the child."

His words, so blunt and merciless, were the truth.

After all, one of Blaze Fairchild’s reasons for getting a marriage certificate was the child.

She was merely the vessel for Blaze Fairchild’s child to enter this world. Her marriage to Blaze Fairchild was just to legitimize that vessel.

This vessel could be her, or it could be any other woman.

For Blaze Fairchild, the only thing that mattered was the birth of a healthy, sound child. Nothing else was important.

Hearing this, Luna Axton felt a pang of sadness. The feeling of being disrespected was all too clear.

But she quickly accepted it and adjusted her mindset.

’Blaze Fairchild wants a healthy child. She wants a healthy mother.’

The only link between her and Blaze Fairchild was the child.

"Do as you please, Mr. Fairchild."

Blaze Fairchild strode toward the elevators. He stood before the button panel, at a loss, and asked Luna Axton, "What floor?"

"Nine." Luna Axton’s reply was just as concise. She wouldn’t say a single extra word.

Blaze Fairchild was incredibly tall and straight-backed, with a distinguished air. Dressed in a crisp suit, he walked past the nurses’ station.

In just those few short seconds, the young nurses and doctors at the station all noticed Blaze Fairchild’s figure.

"Who’s that?"

"He’s so tall!"

"Jenna Axton’s family."

Someone called out to Luna Axton. It was Dr. Wyatt.

"Dr. Wyatt, is something wrong?" She had already signed all the various pre-surgery documents.

"If there’s an issue, address it with me. She’s in a delicate condition."

Blaze Fairchild, who had already walked ahead, reappeared just as he spoke, positioning himself half a step in front of and to the left of her, shielding her from Dr. Wyatt.

Blaze Fairchild’s build was so broad that he almost completely hid her from view.

Luna Axton stared at the texture of the fabric on his suit jacket.

Dr. Wyatt looked at the impeccably dressed, cold-faced man before her. "And you are the patient’s...?"

"Son-in-law."

That one title drew countless stares.

Blaze Fairchild was used to it, but Luna Axton wasn’t accustomed to being stared at. She lowered her gaze to the heels of his shoes.

’Such a refined man. Even the cuffs of his trousers are perfectly straight and tailored.’

"President Fairchild, I’ve heard so much about you." A middle-aged man with a beaming smile extended a hand and introduced himself, "I’m the department head. My name is..."

Blaze Fairchild didn’t extend his hand or acknowledge the department head’s words. His cool gaze remained fixed on the female doctor. "What is the matter?"

"Uh, well, the patient, she..." Under the immense pressure, Dr. Wyatt forgot what she was going to say and just blurted out an excuse. "Her surgery is scheduled to begin at nine this morning."

Blaze Fairchild understood perfectly. He gave a slight nod and turned to leave.

Luna Axton didn’t dare to just turn and walk away. Her mother was still a patient here.

She said politely to Dr. Wyatt and the department head, "Thank you for your hard work."

The department head looked honored. "It’s our duty, Mrs. Fairchild."

She gave a small smile without replying, then quickened her pace to catch up with Blaze Fairchild and push open her mother’s hospital room door.

Only after they had walked away did a buzz of conversation start up at the nurses’ station.

"Director, who is President Fairchild?"

"The president of Evergrow Group. The young master of the Fairchild Family."

The Fairchild Family!

All the medical staff sucked in a sharp breath, frantically searching their memories for any professional mistakes they might have made.

Dr. Wyatt’s face turned ashen as she recalled all the times she had been impatient with the patient and her family.

’They aren’t going to hold this over my head, are they?!’
