Chapter 193: Chapter 193: The Truth of That Night

Vivian Quinn asked curiously, "What leverage?"

"You’re The Phantom Healer, aren’t you?" Austin Grant stated with conviction. "You never actually lied to my father or to Rachel. You *are* The Phantom Healer. They just never imagined The Phantom Healer would be such a young girl, so they thought you were lying."

Vivian Quinn remained noncommittal. "You figured that out because I used acupuncture to save Rachel Quinn’s life yesterday. So, are you going to use that to threaten me now?"

"Vivian, I love you. I just want to be with you again," Austin Grant insisted. "I’m begging you, please give me another chance. Since you’ve never publicly revealed this identity, you must want to keep it secret. I’ll definitely help you keep your secret."

"Snap out of it, Austin Grant!" A cold glint flashed in Vivian Quinn’s eyes. "If I was brave enough to save her so openly, I’m not afraid of my identity getting out. If you want to repay my kindness with ingratitude and expose me as The Phantom Healer, go right ahead. I’d love for everyone to know. It’ll be a nice slap in the face for all those people who say I’m not good enough for Jett Sterling!"

Austin Grant froze. He had assumed Vivian Quinn needed to keep her identity secret, which was why, at the end of his rope, he had resorted to this threat. But now, it seemed he had lost even his last lifeline.

"Vivian, you’re so heartless. It’s like you’ve saved all your cruelty just for me..."

Vivian Quinn scoffed. "Don’t flatter yourself. I’ve told you before, you’re a stranger to me. I won’t waste love or hate on you. If you ever dare to approach me with this nonsense again, don’t blame me for what happens next."

With that, Vivian Quinn turned and walked away.

"Vivian!" Austin Grant started to chase after her but was immediately blocked by bodyguards who rushed forward.

"President Grant, please show some restraint."

Austin Grant shut his eyes in anguish, then had no choice but to leave.

"Vivian, what did he say to you? And why was he kneeling? Don’t tell me he proposed?" Joy Chase asked, her curiosity piqued.

"He’s a psycho with no moral baseline. Just mentioning him leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Let’s drop it and just have a good time."

"Okay."

Vivian Quinn got a thermos and poured two cups of homemade herbal tea. "Joy, the doctor says you’re recovering remarkably well. You can be discharged next week after one last full check-up."

"Really?" Joy Chase said, pleasantly surprised. "Can I finally get out of the hospital and live a normal life?"

"Yes." Vivian Quinn squeezed her hand. "Joy, I’ve rented an apartment downtown and hired tutors to help you catch up on your schooling. You’ve been in the hospital all these years and haven’t had a proper education. It would be awkward to start high school now at your age, so you’ll have to study at home. When the time is right, I’ll ask Jett Sterling to help arrange for you to take the college entrance exams."

"Okay, I’ll follow your lead."

"Good girl."

...

Soon after, Joy Chase was discharged from the hospital and moved into the apartment Vivian Quinn had prepared for her.

Vivian Quinn bought a cake and brought Elle over for a small celebration.

They hadn’t even finished the cake when Vivian received a call from Rachel Quinn.

"Vivian, I’ve been discharged from the hospital. Thank you for saving my life the other day. I’d like to treat you to a meal to show my gratitude."

Vivian Quinn thought for a moment before replying, "A meal won’t be necessary. I’m free this afternoon. We can meet, but I’ll pick the place."

"Okay."

After lunch, Vivian Quinn took Elle back to Sycamore Bay. Once she had put him down for his nap, she headed out to a private club.

Rachel Quinn had arrived early and was already waiting in their private room.

Vivian Quinn ordered a drink and looked across at the plainly dressed Rachel Quinn. "Feeling better?"

"Mhm," Rachel Quinn said gratefully. "The doctor said that if it weren’t for your incredible skills, even if I had survived, I likely would have been left infertile. I’m considered incredibly lucky. As long as I rest and recuperate for a while, I’ll still be able to have children."

"That’s good."

"Vivian, I don’t know what to say..." Rachel Quinn whispered, her hands wrapped around her water glass. "I was basically pulled back from Death’s Door. Lying in the hospital these past few days... not a single person from the Grant Family came to see me. I’ve had a lot of time to think, and I’ve come to see many things clearly. I truly know I was wrong. I stole our parents’ love from you, and I stole your position as the heiress of the Quinn Family."

"Vivian, I was just so scared back then. I had lived with the Quinn Family for over a decade. I couldn’t bear the thought of going back to the countryside, couldn’t accept having a father in prison. That’s why I resorted to such unscrupulous means."

"I’m an incredibly selfish person. A bad person. I didn’t deserve for you to save me. I’m just not worthy..."

Vivian Quinn’s expression was impassive. "Doctors don’t refuse to treat a patient just because they’re a bad person. Even a death row inmate is entitled to medical care. I’m a doctor. Naturally, I’m not going to stand by and watch someone die."

"Vivian, I’m so sorry." Rachel Quinn suddenly stood, walked over to Vivian Quinn, and dropped to her knees. She knocked her head hard against the floor, sobbing. "Hit me! Even if you beat me to death today, I won’t have a single complaint!"

Vivian Quinn looked utterly baffled. "You two are really something else. A few days ago, your husband came and proposed to me. Now you’re on your knees begging me to hit you. What is wrong with you two? Are you both cursed or something?"

Rachel Quinn froze. "Austin Grant proposed to you?"

"He did."

"You can’t accept his proposal! He’s a complete and utter scumbag!"

"Of course I wouldn’t. Who goes digging through the trash for scraps?"

Rachel Quinn wiped away her tears. "Vivian, I’m already planning to divorce Austin Grant. After I lost our child, he didn’t visit me in the hospital even once. A man like that is a curse on any woman who gets involved with him. I have to cut my losses as quickly as possible."

Vivian Quinn was skeptical. "You went to such great lengths to steal him away. You’re giving up that easily?"

"Vivian, I wasn’t in my right mind before. I was obsessed. I know I was wrong now. Please, can you forgive me?"

"Get up, Rachel Quinn. Saving your life doesn’t mean I forgive you," Vivian Quinn said coldly. "I can let go of the fact that you stole my place as the Quinn Family heiress. I can even let go of the fact that you stole our parents from me. But what happened on my eighteenth birthday... that, I can never forgive."

"Vivian, I..."

"You don’t need to say anything else." Vivian Quinn cut her off, taking a sip of orange juice to compose herself before continuing. "Rachel Quinn, whether or not you’re truly sorry has nothing to do with me. If you really want to thank me for saving your life, then tell me the truth about that night. I want to hear every single detail, no matter how small."

Rachel Quinn wept uncontrollably. "Vivian, I’m so sorry..."

"Just tell me the truth, and we can consider our score settled."

"Okay." Rachel Quinn stood up and returned to her seat across the table. "That year..."

"Wait." Vivian Quinn pulled a laptop and another device from her bag. "Sorry, but I don’t trust you. So, I’m going to use a lie detector."

Rachel Quinn looked wronged, but she still nodded. "Fine. To prove that I’m being sincere, I’m willing to take your lie detector test!"

Vivian Quinn didn’t waste any time. After hooking Rachel up to the device, she got straight to the point. "Who was the man from that night?"
