Unexpected Marriage With Mr. Leighton: Rebirth of the Villain-Chapter 289: IT WAS NOT US!
The first thing that Hazel did was to check on Ashlyn. She was whimpering, and her forehead was bleeding, but upon closer look, it was only a cut from the broken glass, which made Hazel feel a little bit of relief.
"Mama... hurt..." Ashlyn cried softly. She was trembling as she pressed her little face against Hazel’s chest. "Ash scares..."
"It’s okay, baby; it’s okay... Mama is here." Hazel wanted to check on her more, but she didn’t have time for that, because she could hear a few footsteps approaching the flipped car.
Hazel tried to move her legs; they were fine, though she felt a little stung. It must be because of the broken glass. She checked her arms. Her left shoulder was a little bit sore because of the impact earlier, but she could move both arms. The gun was still on her. There were only three bullets inside. She had to use it wisely.
Hazel checked on Logan. He didn’t move, but he was still alive based on the rise and fall of his chest. He was unconscious, but thankfully, his seatbelt and the airbag saved his life.
Meanwhile, those people were getting closer.
"Ssh... It’s okay, Ash. Don’t cry." But of course, Hazel couldn’t make her daughter stop crying.
She tried to stay still, holding onto her daughter and the gun tightly, when three people appeared at the door of the car.
"They are here! The baby is alive, but I don’t know about the other two!" One of the men informed his friends.
"Get them out! Get the baby; we need her most! Leave the other two there if they are dead!"
"Come here! The door stuck! I can’t open it!"
There was some back and forth before the other people came closer and yanked the broken car door away. One of them grabbed Hazel by her arm.
Hazel was holding Ashlyn tightly, so they needed to get Hazel out as well if they wanted to take Ashlyn.
By this time, Hazel played dead. She let them drag her out of the wrecked car and took Ashlyn from her arms.
Her daughter cried so hard when she was separated from her, and it took everything in Hazel to stay still and focus on her surroundings as they checked on her.
"She is still alive," one of them said, while the other tried to get Logan out as well.
There were three of them, probably more, but they were not close. One of them held Ashlyn; he was standing right behind her, because she could hear her daughter’s cry clearly, while the other was holding her, and the third man was with Logan.
"Should we take them all back?" The one with Logan asked.
"No, leave the man there. He is useless to us." The one who was holding Ashlyn replied. "These two will be enough."
Hazel breathed evenly. The man who was handling her managed to find the gun in her jacket’s pocket, and when the other man cursed at Ashlyn for scratching his face, that was her cue.
"Damn, this child! Stop scratching my face, or I will throw you!" The man grabbed both of Ashlyn’s arms. He intended to shake her so she would stop attacking him, but he didn’t have a chance to do any of that when, suddenly, he heard a gunshot.
Initially, he thought his man was opening fire in an attempt to kill their hostage, but then he realized that it was actually the other way around.
It was too late for him to reach for his gun, though, when the second gunshot rang through the night and he stumbled back with a bullet hole between his eyes.
Hazel moved quickly; she ignored the pain in her shoulder and grabbed Ashlyn before she fell along with the man, but this movement only aggravated the pain.
Hazel gritted her teeth when she held Ashlyn with one arm and then shot the last man. Now, she had no more bullets in her gun.
"Hiks, hiks... Mama..." Ashlyn clutched onto Hazel; she wrapped her arms around her mother’s neck, almost suffocating her.
"It’s okay; it’s okay." Hazel was still high on adrenaline as she scanned her surroundings and caught sight of a car that moved in her direction.
She squinted her eyes to see whether this was Desgar’s car.
However, good luck was not on her side tonight. It was the enemy’s car. Hazel cursed under her breath and started to climb the banks of the road to get away from there.
"Hold onto me tightly, okay?" Hazel kissed Ashlyn’s cheeks. Ranon would learn there was something not right if she didn’t call him right away. He would be able to track her with the tracker on Ashlyn.
And with that, Hazel started climbing as fast as she could, and when she reached the road, she ran across a field.
Around one kilometer away, she saw the lights from the houses. No matter how crazy they were, they would think twice before causing a scene in the crowded area with so many witnesses.
Hazel could hear the car stop, and a few people ran to cross the field as well to get to her. And then, she heard a gunshot, and the pain was immediate.
***
They lost her.
Lucian was in the hospital because Elric and Desgar had been shot, even though Desgar was not as badly injured as Elric. Alen and Lucian were fine.
They managed to get away from there because those people were more interested in going after Hazel and her daughter.
They couldn’t follow them, or else Elric would lose his life.
"I think she managed to get away. She will be fine. I guess..." Lucian was not sure what to say. Everything that happened had shaken him to the core. He had never gone through anything like that. "Hazel went in the opposite direction..." He added.
His words were jumbled up because his mind was a mess. It didn’t help when Ranon didn’t say anything at all for a long time, and it made Lucian anxious.
"Hey, say something. You have sent some people there, too, right? Is there any news?"
Ranon was staring at the dot on his phone and then hung up the call with Lucian to make another phone call.
His men found Logan. Near him, there were three dead bodies, but they couldn’t find Hazel or Ashlyn. It was an empty road; people rarely drive there. Thus, when his men arrived, they were the first people who witnessed the scene.
"We are taking Logan to the hospital," Cam informed Ranon through the phone. "Dunts is leading a few men to skim the area to look for Mrs. Leighton and Ashlyn."
Ranon then gave a few instructions to him and shared the location that he saw on the phone. It was at the same location Cam was, but they couldn’t find either Hazel or Ashlyn.
"Add more people," Ranon said. He then hung up the call when Arthur approached him.
"Something is wrong?" Arthur asked. He could sense Ranon’s mood shift into a dangerous one.
However, Ranon didn’t say anything. Ares just arrived at the Leighton family’s house as well, but before he could ask Ranon anything, the latter had gone to Daniel’s bedroom, where Issabella was still lying naked on the floor, while Daniel was panting heavily, as he was tied to the bed.
"Fuck you, Ranon! Cover her up! You don’t have any morals!" Daniel growled at his brother.
"I have no morals?" Ranon walked across the room and approached Issabella, who was laughing at him. "You are right."
Ranon was not only losing his morals but also his mind when he fished out his lighter and then grabbed Issabella’s hand.
Her nakedness didn’t bother him at all.
"What are you doing?! Stop it! Stop!"
And as Daniel was yelling at Ranon for what he was about to do, Issabella was screaming in pain when Ranon burned her palm.
"Ranon!" Ares was shocked to see him like this. He was going crazy. "That’s a woman! You can’t hurt a woman!"
Ranon couldn’t care less whether Issabella was a woman or a snake; she was one of the reasons why they were here. Losing her mind or not, she was responsible for this situation as much as Daniel.
It was amusing that Daniel held a grudge against Ranon when they worked together with Gayle Lennox by proxy, as the latter was also responsible for the death of Luciano.
After all, Ranon’s order at that time came from Gayle Lennox. 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺
"Ranon!" Daniel tried to break free from his handcuffs, which was impossible.
"Make the phone call, cancel the hit on me, and tell Gayle to bring back my wife and daughter." Ranon held Issabella’s hand tightly, despite her struggle to get away from him.
He was gambling on Daniel’s feelings for this woman.
At this point, Ranon didn’t have any intention to help Logan and his son. It was a pity that he had a father like him.
Logan had harmed his family.
"Fine! I will do it! I will do it! Stop it!"
"I will stop if you make the phone call."
Daniel screamed at Ares. "Release me! Release me, now!"
Ares didn’t have the key, so he rushed out of the room to find Paxton, and get the key from him.
Once he was free, Daniel went to get his own phone and made a phone call to Jack. There was some back and forth before he shouted frustratedly.
"I will double it! Return the two of them."
"We don’t have them," Jack replied. "It was not us."
