Chapter 290: THE UNEXPECTED HELP

The first thing that came to Hazel’s senses was Ashlyn’s cry. Her little hand shook her body and patted her cheek. She kissed Hazel now and then while calling her with a broken voice.

"Mama, wake up... wake up. Mama..." She nuzzled Hazel’s neck and hugged her. She also climbed on top of Hazel’s body, lying on her chest, which made Hazel have a hard time breathing.

Hazel grunted and tried to move her body, but it was only then that she felt the pain. It almost felt like her body was being bulldozed by a truck, but the sharp pain in her shoulder jolted her and made her alert to her surroundings.

"Mama..." Ashlyn patted Hazel’s cheeks again, sitting on her chest.

"Ugh, you are heavy," Hazel complained. "Get down, Ash, I can’t breathe..."

However, Ashlyn cried even harder as she buried her little face in the crook of Hazel’s neck. The little girl screamed her ear off.

"Why are you crying even harder when I am awake?" Hazel grimaced. She felt her eardrum was going to explode.

Gently, while holding back the pain, Hazel put Ashlyn down from her chest, and she pushed herself into a sitting position. The pain was almost blinding her and took her breath away, but she pushed through.

Sitting down, she cradled Ashlyn in her arms and looked at her surroundings. She was in a room, and she recognized it.

It was the McKennas.

She was in the McKenna family’s house. She had been here a few times when she worked together with Lyle and Kyle in the past, and this was one of their guest bedrooms.

So, the third party that ambushed them was the McKennas. Those men who attacked her must be from the Denver family or newly recruited, because Hazel didn’t recognize any of them. 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞

Shit. She didn’t expect things to turn out this way. Their focus was on Gayle Lennox and the Barlowes, but for that reason, the McKennas managed to sneak up on them.

It was not good in the slightest.

"Shh... shh..." Hazel gently rocked Ashlyn back and forth until her cries subsided, and she finally fell asleep, worn out from her distress. Despite this, Ashlyn continued to cling tightly to the front of Hazel’s dress.

Carefully, Hazel put Ashlyn down on the bed; she bit her lip to stop herself from groaning in pain. They had shot her in the shoulder and knocked her out. Hazel was sure she got a light concussion from it.

Good thing they didn’t separate her from her daughter.

"Your grip is ridiculously tight for a baby." Hazel frowned when she tried to pry herself out of Ashlyn’s clutch. Why did the baby have a strong grip?

Ashlyn sobbed softly in her sleep, and Hazel put her cheek against her to calm her down while still struggling with her daughter’s grip.

Once she managed to be free of her, Ashlyn grabbed her hair instead.

"No, no, no.... Ugh."

It took Hazel a whole three minutes to be free from her daughter without waking her up. Once she could get away from Ashlyn, she checked her condition.

The wound on her shoulder had been dressed. The bullet had been taken out, and the bleeding had stopped.

But the pain still lingered. Hazel checked her legs. She could walk, though she felt a little bit sore on her left ankle.

Aside from her left shoulder that was shot, she was fine.

Once Hazel was done inspecting herself, she walked around the room. The windows were barred, and the room was nearly empty, containing only a bed, a table, a chair, and an empty cabinet.

There was nothing that Hazel could use as a weapon here.

She tried the door, even though she knew it would be locked. It was indeed locked. She skimmed the room and found what she was looking for.

There were CCTV cameras at the corners of the room. They didn’t handcuff her and let Ashlyn be with her, so she guessed they must have monitored her somewhere.

Hazel pulled the table and stacked a chair on top of it before she climbed it to reach the camera and yanked it. She destroyed all the cameras that she could find.

With this, someone would come to check on her sooner or later.

And she was right; it was Lyle who came into the room. Hazel didn’t expect he would be the one who came to her.

"So, it is indeed the McKennas..." Hazel clicked her tongue in annoyance. "What do you want? We know the person behind the hit. I can pay you double for it."

Hazel knew that was only a desperate offer, because if the problem was simple enough to be solved with money, they wouldn’t be here in the first place.

"I am afraid you will not be able to do that." Lyle glanced at Ashlyn, who was sleeping on the bed. His expression was unreadable, and this made Hazel feel uneasy. "Whoever that person is, they have withdrawn their offer."

So, until now, the McKennas still didn’t know that Daniel was behind it. The person who ordered the hit was still unknown to them.

Well, this was not their strong suit to gain the client’s information.

"Good, then I can walk away from here, right? This whole event has never happened, and I will not seek revenge if you let me out of here with my daughter."

So, Ranon’s plan indeed worked. They managed to get Issabella and Daniel to yield. All was good then.

However, things were not that simple, because Lyle shook his head. He glanced at Ashlyn again and then shifted his attention back to Hazel.

"I am afraid it is not that simple. The plan for you has changed." Lyle crossed his arms. A habit he always did whenever he was under pressure.

Hazel didn’t need to use her brain to know who had given him the pressure. Kyle must be behind all of this.

"This situation became very personal. You have offended the wrong people," Lyle said.

"Maybe they are offended because they are in the wrong." Hazel subtly checked on Lyle. She saw his holster. Earlier, she had checked Ashlyn, but her rings had gone. They must have gotten rid of it. Even her earrings were removed, and the dagger on her leg.

Hazel hated the thought that they had touched her and her daughter when they did the searching. Damn those men.

"The way you talk reminds me of someone," Lyle said, as if he were talking to himself.

"What are you doing here? Do you only come here to tell me that?" Hazel narrowed her eyes. She was not sure she would be able to take Lyle down with her current condition. She had to think about her daughter as well.

No matter how she thought about it, she wouldn’t be able to escape.

"No." Lyle frowned. He then reached out to his gun and pulled it out.

Hazel tensed up; she was ready to make a gamble with her life, but instead, Lyle stretched out the gun toward her.

"Take this. I will let the door unlock. You can take the back door. There were not many people there."

Lyle then explained to Hazel how to reach the back door in detail, but little did he know, Hazel knew the layout of this house like the back of her hand. He still could not believe that he did this.

"The CCTV cameras will be off for fifteen minutes, so they will not know your movement. After that... good luck."

He could only help her this far; if she didn’t make it, at least he had tried and paid his debt.

Hazel frowned. She took the gun and checked it; the ammunition was full. "Why did you do this? Is this another trap?"

When Hazel shot him in the stomach, he knew that she had a chance to end his life right there and then, but she showed mercy on him. That was another debt that he had to pay.

"I am out of this mission," Lyle said. Kyle had freed him from this mission since he failed to carry out his ridiculous plan. Therefore, he had no obligation for its success. "You don’t know what their new plan is for you. You will wish you were dead if you get caught."

Moreover, Olivia had been breathing down his neck when she learned that they managed to catch Hazel. She had been making a fuss, and Lyle was having a headache because of it.

"With this, I have paid my debt." Lyle turned around, and he looked at his watch. "Five minutes. Go out in five minutes."

Hazel looked around and saw the clock on the wall. Five minutes.

"Good luck." Lyle then went out of the room and closed the door behind him softly. Hazel checked on it, and it was unlocked, just like he said.

Hazel then went to Ashlyn and woke her up. "Baby, listen to Mama, okay? Do what I say, okay?"

"Hm?" Ashlyn rubbed her sleepy face. Her forehead was swollen, but the cut had been treated. The wound was not so deep.

Ranon went to the hospital.

But he didn’t check on Elric; instead, he went to visit Logan. He just woke up. The car crash left him with a concussion.

He was still dizzy, but soon enough, he was alerted to Ranon’s presence. He walked alone, but Logan felt like he had met his end.

"Ranon, I am sorry. Mr. Leighton, I didn’t..."

Ranon walked toward him calmly, but when he was close enough, he yanked out Logan’s IV drip. The syringe ripped his skin open.
