Chapter 554: Chapter 557: Reactions (Part 1)

Xiqiu went out to greet her, and Madam Jiang had already entered the courtyard under an umbrella held by Nanny Qiu.

"Sixth Lady." Madam Jiang walked over with a furrowed brow, full of worry: "How is Xing?"

Xiqiu stepped forward to support her. She was already nearly six months pregnant, her belly protruding, and although she walked steadily, Xiqiu’s heart was filled with fear: "It’s raining, and the road is slippery. You could have sent someone instead of coming yourself." As they entered the door, Xiqiu continued, "Xing hasn’t woken up yet. Sister Jingliu said we need to observe him for these three days."

"I was hesitant, but my heart was anxious and afraid that if someone else came, I wouldn’t be able to understand clearly, which would make me even more nervous." She paused for a moment and added, "Mother fainted when she heard that Xing was ill. We called a doctor, and he busied himself all morning, yet she hasn’t woken up." She wiped her tears as she spoke: "What is going on? Everything is happening all at once."

Xiqiu feared for her well-being and held her hand as they stood in the hall talking: "How is Mother now? You are the backbone of the family and with a child on the way; you must take care of yourself."

Madam Jiang sighed: "Mother’s situation..." She paused, "Take me to see Xing. We can talk more later."

Xiqiu nodded and escorted Madam Jiang into the side room. Since Xing was ill, they hadn’t dared to move him. Xiqiu had laid a thin mattress on the rose bed... The Grand Dowager was sitting beside, caressing Xing’s head. After a single night, she appeared much more haggard and lacked energy.

"Grand Dowager!" Madam Jiang entered and bowed to the Grand Dowager: "Thank you for your hard work."

The Grand Dowager saw Madam Jiang come in and was surprised: "Why did Grand Aunt come personally!" She added, "Help Grand Aunt sit down."

"No rush, no rush, I’m alright." Madam Jiang took a few quick steps to the bedside, seeing Xing’s pale little face and his weak breathing, she immediately burst into tears and choked: "Why is this happening when everything was going so well..." She paused and then asked: "You said three days, will he surely wake up and recover after three days?"

Xiqiu helped her sit down by the bed. The Grand Dowager sighed, her eyes full of bloodshot: "The medical woman said three days, yet it depends on the child’s willpower." As she spoke, she gently caressed Xing’s small face, which had become much thinner overnight.

"Amitabha Buddha, Amitabha Buddha!" Madam Jiang murmured, bowing repeatedly to the West: "I pray the Bodhisattva bless Xing to overcome this disaster and live a long life..."

The Grand Dowager looked at Madam Jiang’s belly and said worriedly: "Grand Aunt, don’t grieve; your health is important. Everyone has their fortune, and Xing’s fortune lies in her own destiny!" Even so, her tone was filled with unwillingness!

"Mother, Sister-in-law!" Xiqiu comforted both, advising: "Though Sister Jingliu said it’s up to fate, we must remain optimistic. Xing will know we are waiting for him to wake up and will surely get better soon." Though they were empty words, upon hearing them, both the Grand Dowager and Madam Jiang looked better. Madam Jiang nodded: "It’s certainly so. Our Xing will surely be fine."

As they were talking, Ruan Jingliu came in, saw Madam Jiang inside, and nodded. She had previously provided consultations for the Lady, so Madam Jiang recognized her and stood to greet her.

Ruan Jingliu walked over to take Xing’s pulse. Both the Grand Dowager and Madam Jiang tensed up again, and after a while, Ruan Jingliu calmly said: "The fever has lowered somewhat, and the pulse is steadier than last night."

The Grand Dowager breathed a sigh of relief.

Xiqiu watched her and said: "Mother, we are here. How about you go and rest for a while?" The Grand Dowager listened, paused, and looked at Xing worriedly.

Xiqiu looked at her with sparkling eyes; indeed, the Grand Dowager was growing suspicious of her!

Seeing this, Ruan Jingliu added: "Judging by the pulse, there’s little chance he’ll wake today. Rest assured and leave it to me, come back tomorrow morning." The Grand Dowager thought for a moment and finally stood up, nodding, "Thank you, medical woman." She looked at Madam Jiang, "Grand Aunt, please sit a while longer." She then looked at Nanny Wu, "You stay and lend a hand!"

Nanny Wu agreed.

Madam Jiang was taken aback, casting a suspicious glance at Xiqiu and then at the Grand Dowager, furrowing her brow but nodding after a moment of contemplation: "Back home, my mother-in-law’s condition worsened after hearing about Xing. I have to return after seeing him, or I won’t be at ease." The Grand Dowager asked with concern: "How is she, will she be alright?"

Madam Jiang bowed her head and sighed, "The Mrs. said her phlegm clouded her mind. A few days ago, she could speak a few words, but today... she doesn’t even recognize people."

Xiqiu, only just hearing about this, was also taken aback that she couldn’t recognize anyone anymore—it seemed indeed very serious.

"Alas, she’s had a hard time being sick for so long. Upon hearing about Xing, how could she not be distressed!" The Grand Dowager shook her head: "You, as the younger generation, must show filial piety before her." She added, "When you go back, don’t say Xing hasn’t woken up, just say he’s fine to ease her mind."

Madam Jiang nodded continuously: "Precisely what I intended!"

Xiqiu was curious as to how the Lady found out.

Could it have been someone from the Shaohua Courtyard bringing the news back? But the Shaohua Courtyard was cleared out this morning. The Grand Dowager had people gather Tong Xihua’s belongings, and it was now completely empty, so who sent the message?

Could it be that the Lady had sent maids to watch outside the Marquis Mansion so that as soon as people were sent out from the Shaohua Courtyard, they diligently inquired about the news?

She couldn’t help but sigh; the Lady was too hasty. The saffron that Qiu Ping used to poison the Second Madam was likely given by the Lady. If so, she was harming others and herself.

Ziwei escorted the Grand Dowager out, with Xiqiu, Ruan Jingliu, and Madam Jiang seeing her off.

Ruan Jingliu said, "Old Madam Lou’s situation is stable now; I will go over at 3 p.m. to check her pulse again. If all is well, she’ll be able to return home today."

In a stroke of misfortunate fortune, the Grand Dowager nodded, "Thank you for your hard work." With that, she descended the steps, supported by Ziwei.

The three turned back inside, and Madam Jiang pulled Xiqiu into the Warm Pavilion opposite. Looking at Nanny Wu at the side room’s door, she said, "Sixth Lady, I heard it was Qiuping who poisoned; is it true?"

Xiqiu looked at Madam Jiang and nodded, "Qiuping was granted death just this noon!"

Madam Jiang’s face was filled with horror, unable to settle: "How could it be her!" clearly in disbelief.

Xiqiu did not elaborate further.

Madam Jiang, however, pondered over the Grand Dowager’s earlier attitude. With Xinqing being cared for by Xiqiu and Nurse Zhang, the Grand Dowager left behind her personal maid... her demeanor toward Xiqiu was not as it had been; it was as if a rift had grown.

Worrying about Xiqiu’s feelings, she feared asking anything that might hurt her and, after some thought, swallowed her words.
