Transmigrated as Cannon Fodder — I Rise to Female Lead Through Hard Work-Chapter 182: Hupozi’s Transformation
When Yi Roujing and Ding Ancheng arrived at the Dingping Production Team, it was already half past two in the afternoon. They had a bamboo basket with a rabbit inside, covered with a green mesh bag so that the rabbit was out of sight. As for the wild chicken eggs, Yi Roujing wrapped them in a large leaf, carrying it by hand. Others who saw were curious but didn’t ask about it.
As soon as they reached the doorstep, they were greeted by three people walking towards them: Hupozi, Ding JianShe, and Wang Qiushuang.
"Mom, we brought you a piece of pork fat. Jianshe got up early to line up and buy it. Don’t be frugal, use more oil in the dishes. The double harvest is coming up, so you need to nourish yourself." Wang Qiushuang spoke pleasingly, which Hupozi appreciated.
"Roujing, you’re here too. It’s been a while." Hupozi greeted Yi Roujing warmly upon seeing her.
"Yes, it has been a while, so we thought of coming back today to see Mom and Dad." Yi Roujing replied with a smile. For such a reasonable greeting, there was no need to stay aloof or have a cold face.
"You all work in the same factory, and we’re all from the Dingping Production Team, so you should support each other." Hupozi said with a warm smile, her eyes showing a hint of ingratiation.
Hupozi’s change in attitude was due to hearing about the accident involving the transport workers at the food factory. At that time, Yi Roujing had been in the operating room as well. It was heard that she had been transferred to the operating room as a nurse, which indicated her capability.
Everyone’s family has their own illnesses, more so when Yi Roujing works at the employee hospital of the food factory. Her son and daughter-in-law both work in the food factory, and there might be times when they’ll need her help. Moreover, the employee hospital also caters to employees’ families, so Hupozi might end up relying on Yi Roujing in the future. Isn’t it better to speak nicely?
"Auntie, you overestimate me, but I will certainly help where it’s within my duties." After saying this, Yi Roujing nodded and entered the courtyard.
Wang Qiushuang pouted, "Mom, I’ll go render the pork lard and make dinner."
"Oh, no need, no need, I’ll do it myself." Hupozi couldn’t trust Wang Qiushuang in the kitchen since the grain and oil were rationed and she would feel distressed if too much were used.
Not far away, Yi Roujing obviously overheard the conversation between the two, sighing inwardly. Luckily, Ailing’s life is good now; otherwise, it would have been so not worth it.
Ding Ancheng started working immediately upon entering the house, chopping wood and fetching water, while Yi Roujing wasn’t idle either. She began tidying up the room, airing the bedding outside, ventilating, wiping and cleaning. The mats were washed and dried as well.
Ding Ancheng fetched several loads of water, filling all the water tanks in the yard. This was for the family to bathe in the evening, just warm enough.
After finishing up the chores inside, Yi Roujing began picking vegetables from their own plot, gathering cucumbers, bitter melons, and eggplants. She washed and sliced them, so her mother-in-law would just need to stir-fry them upon returning.
The rabbit was left to Ding Ancheng to skin and gut, which ended up with just two or three pounds of meat.
The pig feet and pork belly brought from the city were also cleaned and placed in a wooden basin. With most of the ingredients prepared, Yi Roujing rinsed the rice and soaked it in water, job done.
The fierce sun dried the mats in about two hours, which were then laid on the rattan bed, and the quilts were brought back inside, perfectly.
Sweating, Yi Roujing ladled some water to wash herself in the room, changed clothes, and felt entirely comfortable. She waited with a palm fan in hand for her parents-in-law to return from work.
"Ding Ancheng, I’ve prepared your change of clothes. Wash up after you’re done with the chores." Yi Roujing, feeling content herself, didn’t forget to care for Ding Ancheng.
"I’ll boil water first and then come." In the kitchen, Ding Ancheng prepared water as he knew Yi Roujing only drank boiled water, using a whole pot every day.
Such consideration warmed Yi Roujing’s heart as she sat on the chair, chuckling.
Upon seeing that the woodpile had grown higher and the water tanks were full after returning from work, Ding Weihuo and Li Hongying entered the house, grinning from ear to ear when they saw Ding Ancheng and Yi Roujing emerging from the room.
"Why didn’t you inform us in advance of your visit, so we could’ve prepared better dishes?" Li Hongying gently chided.
"We bought some things on the way and even caught a rabbit and found a nest of wild chicken eggs." Yi Roujing whispered.
"I’ll take care of it right away." Li Hongying happily went into the kitchen. Seeing the neatly sliced vegetables and clean meat, she felt a warmth in her heart. By the cutting skills, she knew it was done by Yi Roujing.
Her own family life was getting better, and this daughter-in-law was truly blessed, bringing prosperity to the whole family.
Li Hongying was humming a little tune while cooking.
During dinner, Yi Roujing talked about her visit to her parents’ home. This was also the reason for her visit. Li Hongying was very pleased, knowing the family’s child had settled down. No more worries since it was Yi Roujing who secured the permanent job quota for Anguo.
Li Hongying inquired about Ding Anmin because their daughter was currently dating.
Yi Roujing explained everything. The Huang Family was very warm to Ding Anmin, often visiting and valuing her greatly.
Li Hongying actually had her concerns as their family was so different from theirs. She didn’t expect such a family to marry a rural-born girl, but hearing their kindness to her daughter, she felt touched.
Due to the mountain trip planned for the next day, Ding Ancheng didn’t pester Yi Roujing that night, instead helping to fan her. Only when she fell asleep did he put the fan down and go to sleep himself.
The next morning, Li Hongying had already prepared breakfast: green bean porridge, meat baozi, and four wild chicken eggs, one for each person.
"Mom, after the double harvest, why don’t you come live in the city? Our wages and ration tickets are enough for all of us," Yi Roujing proposed. She couldn’t bear to see them laboring at home when they could enjoy life in the city while they had a place to live.
"Oh, don’t worry about us. We’re strong and able; working makes us feel good. We know you are filial, and when the farm work isn’t busy, we’ll go to the city to stay, just like before." Ding Weihuo waved his hand. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶
"During the National Day holiday, let me take you out for a trip," Ding Ancheng suddenly suggested. "Nearby, we could visit the provincial capital, or maybe further to Jing City."
"What would we do in those places?" Ding Weihuo wasn’t interested. "Isn’t it just eating and sleeping? Home’s much better."
"Dad," Ding Ancheng called softly, making Ding Weihuo understand his elder son’s intentions.
"Do as you see fit. If you must go, go somewhere close." Ding Weihuo grinned.
"Alright," Ding Ancheng nodded.
Li Hongying laughed happily beside them.
"Oh, by the way, the Li Family has been over a few times asking for help finding Li Xipei. The kid seems to be missing." Ding Weihuo changed the subject.
Li Hongying remained silent at the side. "You handle it yourselves, don’t worry about me. You know what kind of people they are. They might have sold him themselves, but still, if you can find him, it’s better to do so."
