Transmigrated as Cannon Fodder — I Rise to Female Lead Through Hard Work-Chapter 181: Choices
Weng Hefeng is straightforward, but she has her own standard when it comes to important matters. She previously said she would send her two kids to study in the city purely because she heard Pan Kexia say it. She deliberately said so to thwart Pan Kexia’s plans.
It’s the same logic as sisters-in-law competing; everyone is a daughter-in-law, so fairness is a must. Mother-in-law Liu Huilan is fair enough, but if Pan Kexia wants to stand out, she can’t blame Weng Hefeng for disliking her.
With Weng Hefeng backing her up, Pan Kexia was fuming, but she had to keep her mouth shut after Liu Huilan spoke one sentence.
"If my son can’t even handle matters concerning his own child, what right does he have to be a father or a husband? I’d say he should get divorced and only marry again when he matures."
Pan Kexia is truly afraid of her mother-in-law suggesting her son and daughter-in-law divorce. While most families advise reconciliation, her own mother-in-law is the one suggesting separation. Pan Kexia even complained about this to her family, only to be scolded by her own mother for being ungrateful despite her blessings.
With the matter settled, Yi Roujing completed her task and then sat on a bamboo chair under the shade of a tree, fanning herself with a bamboo fan.
The weather is getting hotter. There’s a slight chill in the early mornings and late evenings, but midday is truly scorching. In such weather, going to work in the fields is unimaginable. It’s said that in mid-July, there will be a period of at least two weeks of intensive work. Although Yi Roujing has not personally experienced it, her original body’s memories of this period are vivid, even if they’re not memories of actually working.
Still, during the intensive work period, delivering meals was her original body’s job. She witnessed firsthand work such as cutting rice in the fields and digging peanuts all day... This kind of work is done daily for at least half a month, and many people are noticeably slimmer and darker after this period.
"The electric fan should arrive next week," Ding Ancheng said, bringing a piece of watermelon to Yi Roujing. "This time, I had someone buy several, and we’ll give one to both my parents and mother-in-law."
"Are electric fans so easy to buy?" Yi Roujing was a bit surprised.
"Of course, they’re not easy to buy, but I have connections," Ding Ancheng smiled. "Just can’t manage to have one in every room."
"Having one per household is already considered a treasure; there’s no way to have one in each room," Yi Roujing said, becoming more aware of the reality of those times. "We’ll get more for them when there’s a chance in the future. For now, they can take turns using it."
Yi Roujing took a bite of the watermelon slice; it was so sweet, and without any seeds, proving that the very center of a watermelon is the most tempting part.
Seeing Yi Roujing enjoying herself, Ding Ancheng offered her the piece of watermelon he was holding, "You can have the tip."
This guy sure knows her well. Yi Roujing glanced at Ding Ancheng, smiled, and took a bite from the tip of his watermelon.
Nearby, Pan Kexia suddenly found the watermelon she was eating wasn’t sweet anymore. Even though her husband was good to her, he had never given her the seedy top part of the watermelon. Indeed, people shouldn’t be compared to others; it’s infuriating.
Liu Huilan saw this and smiled in satisfaction. She originally thought her daughter’s forced marriage would be unhappy, yet it was going so well, and it could only get better.
When Yi Shunyin and his two sons returned, hearing about the apprenticeship matter, everyone was very excited. The brothers, Yi Weimin and Yi Weijun, happily patted each other on the shoulder.
"Brother, where do you want to go? You choose, and I’ll take the other one," Yi Weijun said seriously to his older brother, Yi Weimin.
"Both jobs are good, each with its own skills. Younger brother, you choose what interests you; I’m okay with either," Yi Weimin replied humbly.
"Weijun, I think the transport department suits you. You also have a brother-in-law there, and if you don’t understand something, you can ask. Since your older brother is more mature, he can handle the power plant even alone," Pan Kexia chimed in eagerly.
While Yi Weijun naturally agreed with his wife’s words, he still felt uncomfortable with her trying to stand out at such times. He once thought his wife was better than his sister-in-law because she spoke gently and seemed more competent; now he felt troubled when she always wanted to be first.
"Weijun, then why don’t you go to the food factory?" Yi Weimin genuinely didn’t mind and asked.
"Okay, brother," Yi Weijun nodded, "After all, we’re all in the same county. If any issues arise, we shouldn’t hide them from each other; we can always solve them together."
After replying, Yi Weijun glared at Pan Kexia. She had already made the decision for him, leaving him no choice but to agree. Luckily, the sister-in-law hadn’t voiced any objections.
"When the time comes, you three brothers can stay at our place," Yi Roujing spoke up. "Workers’ housing usually accommodates eighty to ninety people per room. Some may not have got a couple’s room, and they stay with their families there, which can be inconvenient. We have an empty room."
"Jing is right; let the three brothers-in-law stay at the County First Middle School," Ding Ancheng quickly supported, showing his opinion.
"County First Middle School? Did you apply for a house, son-in-law?" Pan Kexia’s eyes lit up upon hearing this.
"It’s about time to apply. Son-in-law has a brother, a sister, and parents, so having a slightly larger couple’s room would make it more spacious for them," Weng Hefeng interjected.
"But didn’t I hear from my younger brother-in-law that you don’t live at the County First Middle School?" Pan Kexia beamed. "Isn’t it Bright Alley? The location is good and close to the factory."
"That’s the house bought by the son-in-law’s family; it belongs to the in-laws. It’s one thing for him to live there alone, but how can all three brothers dare to stay there as well? If people knew, they might say something about how the younger sister provides for her maiden family," Weng Hefeng sneered.
"And I heard that city houses, no matter how big, are like bird nests compared to rural ones. If you have a spacious house, you should be happy."
Now that Weng Hefeng knows her husband’s job is secure, she’s committed to supporting Yi Roujing fully. In her heart, she’s also set herself a task: not to let Pan Kexia stand out, because if her husband’s job falls through, who could she turn to cry?
With Weng Hefeng acting as a strong and sharp deterrent, Pan Kexia’s lunch was quite unpleasant, while Yi Roujing felt much more at ease.
After taking out a tin of barley malt, a piece of pork belly, and a pig’s trotter from the net, Yi Roujing and Ding Ancheng prepared to head to the Dingping Production Team under the scorching sun.
Liu Huilan, feeling sympathetic, gave them two bamboo hats before they headed out.
"Let’s go through the mountains; it’s cooler," Ding Ancheng suggested to Yi Roujing as they took the mountain path.
"Do you know the way?"
"Yes, I do," Ding Ancheng replied, guiding Yi Roujing around the mountain’s outskirts. Although the route was longer, the shaded trees along the way made it more comfortable than taking the main road.
Additionally, they came across a nest of wild bird eggs and a wild rabbit along the way, allowing for a special dinner.
"Aren’t the medicinal herbs mostly sold out? Should we go into the mountains tomorrow?" Yi Roujing suggested to Ding Ancheng, receiving his agreement.
