Transmigrated as Cannon Fodder — I Rise to Female Lead Through Hard Work-Chapter 183: Up the Mountain
Li Hongying harbored resentment toward her family, but it was only aimed at the older generation and her peers. The younger ones hadn’t done anything wrong, and she couldn’t bear to see the children suffer.
"Mom, I know the person I took away," Ding Ancheng said without hiding.
Li Hongying was so shocked that she dropped her chopsticks, and Ding Weihuo stopped eating.
"Did they, did they do something again?" Li Hongying was extremely worried, "Ancheng, are you and your wife alright? What about Anguo and the others? Don’t hide anything from me."
"Before, Jing fell into the water and almost drowned. She was bedridden for many days, and it was Li Xipei who pushed her; Before Jing, Anmin, and Xia went to the town, Li Xipei and Li Xijun hired thugs to block them in the bamboo forest on the mountain, with clear intent, but Jing beat them up; When I was in the county town, I saw with my own eyes once, they cornered Jing in an alley."
"Li Xipei repeatedly tried to take Jing’s life, so I took her away," Ding Ancheng said more than he usually did.
Li Hongying’s eyes widened in shock, "What kind of heart does she have, what does Roujing have to do with her?"
"The reason is me," a flash of disgust and revulsion crossed Ding Ancheng’s face.
"Mom, Li Xipei likes Ancheng," Yi Roujing explained for Ding Ancheng.
"She, she, she... Ancheng is her cousin."
"Not by blood," Ding Weihuo sighed, "Roujing, our family has brought trouble upon you."
"Alive, but probably won’t return for a lifetime," Ding Ancheng said truthfully.
Li Hongying said with hatred, "What kind of family raises what kind of children, how can they educate their children to be like that, to harm others’ lives for something that doesn’t belong to them."
"Ancheng, don’t worry, Mom won’t speak of this, will act as if nothing happened," Li Hongying said angrily, "Eat, eat, let’s just live our own lives well, don’t bother with others."
"Mm, alright." Ding Ancheng nodded with a smile.
After the meal, Ding Ancheng and Yi Roujing took a water bottle and headed up the mountain.
Cape jasmine, Spatholobus... Yi Roujing found a lot of fresh herbs worth harvesting and picked some. They are very commonly used, and once processed, they are handy to have at home.
Though they are not worth much.
They had gone quite deep already, but still hadn’t found any valuable herbs. Yi Roujing was a bit deflated, randomly tossing some of what was in her hands.
"Awoo—"
Ding Ancheng quickly pulled Yi Roujing behind him; there were wolves, and wolves are pack animals.
"Let’s get down the mountain quick." Ding Ancheng pulled her along to run back, but after a short run, they encountered a wild boar.
"Can you climb a tree? Find a sturdy one, climb up high, and no matter what happens, don’t come down." Ding Ancheng didn’t expect today’s luck to be so bad, wolves in front and a pig behind.
He had no choice but to make a quick fight.
"Awoo—" But before Ding Ancheng could move, the boar moved first, frightening them back. Then a large, snow-white figure leapt over his head, biting that wild boar fiercely.
"Ah, it’s me, it’s me." Yi Roujing hadn’t had time to climb the tree, but seeing the familiar alpha wolf, she ran over joyously to stand in front of Ding Ancheng.
"Awoo—" A small figure ran over cheerfully from a distance, coming to Yi Roujing’s side, and nuzzled her leg affectionately.
Ding Ancheng looked on with deep, searching eyes.
After the boar gasped its last, the alpha wolf also came over, staring at Ding Ancheng for a while before approaching Yi Roujing, nuzzling her like one of its own pups.
"So healthy and strong now." Yi Roujing patted the young wolf’s head; it had grown a lot.
"Awoo—"
"Is there something else you’re hiding from me?" Ding Ancheng looked directly at Yi Roujing, his gaze shifting sideways.
"This, this was accidental..." Yi Roujing recounted the story of her and Ding Anmin encountering the wolf pack, explaining that since she saved a cub, they got familiarized; she didn’t expect them to recognize her after such a long time apart.
"Was it them who sent the venison that time?" Ding Ancheng was surprised, but grateful for his wife’s and sister’s fortuitous encounters.
"Awoo, awoo." The young wolf bit Yi Roujing’s pant leg and pulled her toward the now-dead boar, clearly indicating it was a gift for them.
Ding Ancheng frowned; this wild boar must weigh at least two hundred pounds, and carrying it back alone would be a struggle. But in the deep mountains, if they didn’t move it quickly, the dead boar would attract other animals.
He made a makeshift net out of vines on the spot, covering the boar, unable to carry it but dragging it along. The alpha wolf even helped from behind, making it considerably easier.
"With such a big target, when we reach halfway down the mountain, I’ll call for help. Our family can’t keep it all to ourselves; let’s have the team leader distribute it to the villagers," Ding Ancheng suggested.
"Mm, I’ll listen to you," Yi Roujing replied with a smile, "Though I didn’t find any valuable herbs, having a wild boar isn’t bad either."
"Awoo—" The young wolf, perhaps understanding, looked up at her as she finished speaking.
"I’ll keep watch, you go call for help," Yi Roujing said. Ding Ancheng wasn’t sure whether to feel at ease or worry with the alpha wolf there, but having seen how his wife interacted with the wolves, he obediently went down the mountain.
"Awoo, awoo—" The young wolf again tugged Yi Roujing’s pant leg, pulling her up the mountain. The alpha wolf led the way, and the young wolf pulled hard; though puzzled, Yi Roujing followed along quickly, not wanting to worry Ancheng if he returned to find her gone.
The alpha wolf and the young wolf led Yi Roujing near the wolf den. She wondered if there was yet another injured wolf, but they passed by the entrance and continued leading her forward.
The trees grew denser, and she realized this was a path she’d never taken. After manoeuvring through a thicket of vines, the view opened up before her—a mountain lake. Though the lake was perhaps only a quarter of an acre, it amazed Yi Roujing because one side of the lake was a towering cliff, and she was standing right at the base of the cliff.
Pale yellow Dendrobium Nobile covered the cliff face, and joy blossomed in Yi Roujing’s eyes. Dendrobium is a rare treasure, and it’s currently the perfect time for harvesting.
Excitedly, Yi Roujing began picking. The ones too high she had to forgo, but she picked all she could reach, both plants and flowers, which was quite a lot.
"Awoo—" The young wolf circled around her, happy to see Yi Roujing’s joy.
The alpha wolf had gone to a nearby spot and returned when Yi Roujing had gathered enough, holding a wild chicken in its mouth.
Loaded with their finds, Yi Roujing quickened her pace back, and by the time she returned, Ding Ancheng was still where she had left him, though the boar was gone.
"Did you go up the mountain again?" Ding Ancheng asked, concerned.
"Mm, the young wolf took me to a treasure trove with lots of Dendrobium, valuable medicinal herbs. I picked quite a lot." Yi Roujing replied, embarrassed, "Did I keep you waiting?"
"Let me take it." Ding Ancheng took the basket from her, also taking the wild chicken from the alpha wolf and thanking them with a smile, "Thanks so much for today, you two."
