Chapter 103: Chapter 103: Don’t Hide from Me Anymore

Vera Yves turned around and saw a man in a black cotton coat charging at her with a menacing look. π•—πš›πšŽπšŽπ°π—²π—―π—»πš˜πšŸπšŽπ—Ή.π•”π¨π•ž

The woman picked up the child, ready to run, but was kicked down onto the sofa by the man, unable to stand up.

The child in her arms woke up in shock and began to wail upon seeing the man, immediately drawing the attention of those around.

"Where the hell do you think you’re taking my son?"

Vera Yves stood up, trying to intervene.

The man suddenly pulled a kitchen knife from his coat and swung it at the woman.

Vera Yves instinctively stepped back, shouting, "Stop!"

The man noticed Vera Yves for the first time and sinisterly asked, "Are you the bitch who convinced my wife to run away from home?"

Seeing the murderous intent in his eyes, Vera Yves’ mind went blank. She turned to run, but fear left her legs powerless.

The man caught up in a few strides, muttering under his breath.

Ear-piercing screams erupted around them.

Just as the man was closing in with no path left for Vera Yves to retreat, someone pulled her away.

"Squish!"

The sound of a knife penetrating skin, the scent of blood spreading.

Before Vera Yves could gather her thoughts, that silhouette had already grappled with the man.

"Clang!" The knife fell to the ground, kicked far away.

The security guards finally arrived and quickly subdued the now nearly insane man.

Vera Yves finally came to her senses. Seeing the silhouette and the blood on the ground, her heart was pounding.

She rushed over, "You’re hurt!"

Miles clutched the wound on his abdomen, smiling as he looked down at her, "Just a small injury."

Vera Yves tried to stay calm and took out her phone to call emergency services.

Blood continued to flow through his fingers.

The hotel staff hurriedly took them to the hospital.

Vera Yves unbuttoned his shirt, seeing the gaping wound, and nearly fainted.

Miles pressed her hand, "Vera, don’t worry, I’ll be fine."

With so much blood, how could he be fine?

Vera Yves untied the scarf from her neck, pressing hard against the wound, the blood quickly soaked and reddened the scarf.

The staff member ahead turned back, looking at Miles’ almost bloodless face, hurriedly said, "The hospital is nearby! We’ll be there soon! Hang in there!"

Miles tried to touch Vera Yves’ face, finding his hands covered in blood.

"Vera, don’t cry."

Vera Yves just realized her face was covered in tears.

"Why are you here?"

"I was afraid you’d run away with someone else." Miles smiled at her, "Good thing I came, that pretty boy is so unreliable."

Vera Yves wanted to smile, but her lips wouldn’t form a curve.

Miles suddenly leaned closer, resting his forehead against hers, "Vera, can you promise me not to hide from me anymore?"

Vera Yves looked into his eyes, "How could you do this?"

Miles smiled, "You know, this is who I am."

After saying this, he seemed exhausted and closed his eyes. Vera Yves held him, tears falling again helplessly.

Linda Young and Nathan Norton arrived at the hospital more than half an hour later.

Miles had lost too much blood, though he was rescued, he remained unconscious.

The hotel staff nearby said, "It’s a good thing the hotel is near the hospital. If it were half an hour later, not even a god could save him."

Linda Young thanked him, then walked to Vera Yves, "Vera, I brought you a change of clothes. Go wash up and change. You’re covered in blood."

Vera Yves finally came to her senses, "Where’s that woman?"

"The police should have taken her away."

Vera Yves went to the bathroom, washed the blood from her hands, changed clothes, and called Zoe Monroe.

Miles woke up during the transfer to another hospital.

Penelope Langley saw him awake and finally sighed in relief, her eyes red, "Do you know you almost died?"

Miles gave a pale smile, "Not as dramatic as that."

"Does it still hurt?"

Miles shook his head, "Where’s Vera?"

Penelope Langley’s expression changed, but she didn’t answer.

Zoe Monroe poked her head out, smiling, "Vera said she had something to do, and the earliest she can return is tomorrow."

Miles’ eyes dimmed.

Zoe Monroe continued, "Vera stayed by your bedside. It was Aunt Penelope who said to transfer you back to Imperia’s hospital, so she left."

Penelope Langley frowned, "That’s enough. Let him rest."

Zoe Monroe exchanged glances with Miles before sitting up straight again.

Vera Yves went to the police station to give a statement and brought the woman out, taking her to the hotel room this time.

The woman was clearly also very frightened, bursting into tears when she saw Vera Yves and the others, "He used to have a bad temper, but he wouldn’t hit people. Ever since we got money a few years ago, he changed completely, drinking, gambling, and hitting people."

"Your mother-in-law had lung cancer. Treating her at home must have cost a lot. How did you suddenly get money a few years ago?"

The woman looked nervously at Vera Yves, "Miss Yves, you promised to give me money. I don’t want much, just two hundred thousand, enough for my daughter and me to start over."

Vera Yves did not immediately answer.

The woman anxiously said, "Even if you ask others, they won’t tell you!"

"Why not?"

"I may not understand the law, but I know this must be illegal!"

Vera Yves slowly clenched her hand, "Tell me everything you know, and I’ll give you the money."

"I remember Old Mr. Yves only prescribed formulas without dispensing medicine, and he only prescribed a seven-day supply, telling us to return for a follow-up. But you know, so many people seek his treatmentβ€”it cost over a thousand just to get an appointment."

Vera Yves was puzzled. Indeed, many people sought her grandfather’s treatment. He only saw fifty patients a day, accepted walk-ins only, and follow-ups were registered with no need to re-book.

Since she went to college, she wasn’t with her grandfather. Simon Warren handled these matters.

"Later, Mr. Yves’ disciple found us, recommending a herbal store where we could get our medicine, giving us a two-month supply at once for fifteen thousand."

"What’s the pharmacy called?"

"Something Hall, I think."

"Wellspring Pharmacy?"

The woman hesitantly nodded, "I think that’s it. We trusted Old Mr. Yves and stopped chemotherapy, switched to herbal medicine. But after two months, during a hospital recheck, the tumor grew back. William Warren couldn’t take it and called Mr. Yves’ disciple."

The woman sighed, "Who knows what they discussed, but more medicine was sent to us, costing another ten thousand. But within a month, my mother-in-law passed away."

"We went to Imperia to seek justice. Our initial aim was the pharmacy since all the money went there, but Mr. Yves’ disciple stopped us."

"He insinuated the pharmacy was fine, but the formula was problematic, and told us that the waters here are deep. Old Mr. Yves was supposedly experimenting with new formulas on poor people, and the medicine was too strong this time, leading to my mother-in-law’s death."

The woman paused, "He claimed a crisis of conscience, didn’t want to aid the evildoer, and even gave us a sum for burial."

"How much?"

"Three hundred thousand."

Three hundred thousand for burial?

Vera Yves coldly laughed, "What conditions did he propose?"
