Chapter 102: Chapter 102: I Want to Give Her a Lifetime Now

Vera Yves had no choice but to call out, "Aunt Lana."

Penelope Langley quickly regained her composure, smiling in response. "Vera, come over and visit sometime."

Vera smiled, "Okay."

"The soup’s here for you, drink it while it’s hot." Penelope glanced at Miles Monroe before she left the room, closing the door behind her.

Vera breathed a sigh of relief.

Miles chuckled as he looked at her, "Why so tense?"

"I’m not."

Miles gazed at her flushed cheeks, "Vera, I know what you’re worried about. In my eyes, you’re no different from how you used to be."

Vera hesitated for a moment, "Miles, what I said this morning wasn’t just out of anger."

"I am serious too, Vera. You just need to follow your heart and decide whether you want to be with me. Leave everything else to me, okay?"

"I’m not in a position now..."

Miles interrupted her, "Vera, I’m a man too, and being rejected three times in one day really hurts my pride."

"So please, if you’re going to reject me, save it for tomorrow, and tell me in person, alright?"

Vera felt like she was punching cotton. She hung up the video call. Since they were young, anything he set his mind to seemed achievable for him.

Using that harmless-looking face to act shamelessly.

Vera felt troubled, but there was something faintly stirring inside her. She took a deep breath, pressing it down.

Vera Yves, blinded by emotions, fell twice in the same place. I’ll look down on you!

After hanging up, Miles finished the soup beside him, then got up and left the room.

Penelope Langley was waiting for him in the living room downstairs.

The attendant diligently took the soup bowl from him, to which Miles courteously said, "Thank you, Aunt Autumn."

"No need, it’s my duty."

Penelope sat on the couch, arms crossed below her chest, looking like she was about to reprimand him.

Miles sat across from her.

"I thought after you’ve been abroad these years and endured hardships, you’d settle down, but you still remain so naive!"

Miles chuckled, "Mom, I haven’t suffered abroad."

Penelope shot him a glance, "You’ve turned the household upside down for Jane Shea all these years, wasn’t that enough? Now you’re bringing trouble with Vera Yves?"

"Didn’t you often say back then that you’d want her to be your daughter-in-law when she grows up?"

"How is that the same as now?"

Miles remained calm, "It’s indeed different; my reaction was too slow."

"Her divorce from Winston Valentine was a big scandal, and everyone knows she was his ex-wife!"

Penelope looked at him with frustration, "If you really get together with her, what would people say? They’d say Miles Monroe wants a woman Winston Valentine discarded!"

Miles’ face turned dark, "Mom, she’s Vera."

Penelope softened, "Mom doesn’t dislike Vera..."

"She’s Vera, not someone else." Miles stood up, "I have only two options: don’t want or give her a lifetime. I now wish to give her a lifetime."

"Miles Monroe!"

...

Afraid that Miles would come to face rejection, Vera left early in the morning after packing some simple luggage.

Linda Young drove, Nathan Norton sat in the back seat, and upon seeing Vera, he waved his hand cheerfully, "Sis, I’ve missed you so much!"

Vera looked at Linda in confusion.

Linda cleared her throat, "We’re going to his hometown; he’s familiar with the place, and offered to guide us."

Nathan obediently said, "Sis, I promise I’ll just watch over you secretly, and won’t bother you!"

Vera looked at him speechlessly.

Linda rolled her eyes, "You’re such a creep!"

The phone rang, Vera answered.

"What do you want for breakfast?"

"I’m going out today."

"Where are you going?"

Vera paused for a moment, "Miles, from now on, if there’s nothing important, please don’t contact me again, okay?"

There was a long silence on the other end.

Nathan, hearing Vera mention Miles’ name, cleared his throat, "Sis, do you want some preserved plums?"

Vera hardened her resolve and hung up the phone.

Linda rubbed her chin as she looked at her, "Is Miles chasing you?"

Vera rubbed her temples.

Linda continued, "I knew it. It’s called ’enjoy the act while abusing the wife, chase her like a funeral drama!’ Don’t agree easily; make him suffer everything you endured back then."

Vera chuckled. Between her and Miles, it was always her unrequited love in the past, never reaching that height.

Unexpectedly, she thought of Winston Valentine. Vera closed her eyes, all because of the way he looked at her, shrouded in smoke, unclear yet irritating.

The three of them headed to a small village in Brimwell. Nathan was from the city and unfamiliar with the countryside, with navigation and a bit of groping, it took them three and a half hours to finally reach the village.

Nathan got out of the car to inquire, eventually leading them to a household at the village entrance.

Before they even entered, shouting mixed with a child’s crying could be heard from inside.

Nathan stepped forward and knocked on the door, waiting for quite a while until a woman in her thirties opened it.

The woman’s hair was a bit disheveled, her face still bearing marks of abuse. Seeing three strangers out of place here, she was noticeably stunned, "Who are you looking for?"

Vera stepped forward, politely saying, "We’re from Imperia, looking for William Warren. Here’s my business card."

Vera handed her a business card that had been photocopied at the clinic earlier, indicating that she was her grandfather’s assistant.

The woman’s face changed as soon as she saw ’The Yves Clinic’ written on it, "This isn’t William Warren’s house, you’ve got the wrong place!"

With that, she tried to close the door.

A man reeking of alcohol came out, cursing, and grabbed the woman’s hair, pulling her aside, glaring at them menacingly, "Who were you talking to?"

Vera noted the woman’s expression of pain, calmly saying, "Could you let her go first?"

"Mind your own damn business! Who are you guys?"

Seeing the woman in pain, Nathan angrily said, "Hey man, it doesn’t matter who we are, just let her go first!"

"They are just asking for directions!" The woman hurriedly tried to close the door before Vera could speak.

Linda blocked the door, "Ma’am, if you need, we can help you call the police!"

The woman shook her head fearfully, "No need!"

"Bang!"

The door was slammed shut.

Although it was just a few words, Vera remembered her voice; this was the woman she had contacted from the Warren Family.

The three of them returned to the city and checked into a hotel.

Vera thought, tomorrow she’d guard the Warren house; the woman would eventually come out.

After dinner, Linda and Nathan wanted to go to a bar. Vera felt a bit uncomfortable from sitting for too long, so she stayed in.

After the call in the morning, Miles hadn’t contacted her since.

Vera thought, it’d be best if he never contacted her again.

Her phone rang, and Vera tightened her grip. Seeing it was an unfamiliar number, she relaxed a little.

She answered it, and a trembling voice came over, "Miss Yves, I know what you want to ask. I can tell you everything I know, but you must give me money!"

Vera sat upright, "Where are you now? Money is not an issue, we can discuss it face-to-face."

The woman was in the city, half an hour later, in the hotel lobby.

The woman held a sleeping child on the couch, her face finally showing some light upon seeing Vera come over.

Vera sat across from her, "Is your husband William Warren?"

The woman nodded, "Back then, it was my mother-in-law who had lung cancer. I used my connections to find Old Mr. Yves in Imperia."

Vera asked the service attendant for two glasses of water.

"Miss Yves, back then..." The woman suddenly looked behind her in terror.
