Chapter 217: Chapter 217: The Last Survivor

The bus was headed straight for Ying Baiyi, with hordes of bird people diving down at it, many already clinging to the roof.

Ying Baiyi saw that the person in the driver’s seat was Chen Ke, and there were a few people inside the bus.

He was surprised that Chen Ke was still alive, but he couldn’t be sure if he had made it back to the Rumi Hotel.

As the bus neared Ying Baiyi, it slowed down, and with a “bang,” the side door swung open.

“Get in! Quickly!” Sam, holding an M14 by the door, shouted as he tried to prevent bird people from taking the opportunity to enter.

The three survivors behind Ying Baiyi didn’t hesitate like he did, immediately running towards the bus.

Driving at night attracted many bird people, but it was better to hide inside the bus than to be torn apart on the streets. Ying Baiyi sighed and followed suit.

Sam grabbed the survivors’ hands and one by one pulled them into the bus. When he grabbed Ying Baiyi’s hand, his facial muscles tensed.

“Is everyone on board?” Chen Ke asked from the driver’s seat.

“Everyone is in,” replied Sam.

The door closed with a “bang,” and the bus accelerated again. Those standing clung tightly to the handrails.

Ying Baiyi looked around at the people in the bus, two children and two women sitting in the middle, and two male survivors holding M14s, guarding the front and rear of the bus.

To his surprise, he found Diana, her body wrapped in bandages, sitting at the rear.

Ying Baiyi had thought Diana was a goner for sure, with injuries so severe, in such a dire situation, she wouldn’t have survived without help.

It seemed Chen Ke had gone back…

The survivors who had narrowly escaped death slumped into the nearby seats. Although many bird people were pounding on the roof, creating a “thump thump thump” sound, they felt much safer, no longer needing to run for their lives.

They wept with relief, dropping their guns at their feet, each one having lost the will to fight.

Sam moved away from the door and went towards Chen Ke, who was driving. At the moment, he was not in the mood to speak with Ying Baiyi.

Ying Baiyi, aware of the current situation, didn’t initiate a conversation either, and with his Spiritual Bullets running low and feeling extremely tired, he found a nearby seat, sat down, and closed his eyes to rest.

Having everyone on the bus didn’t mean that the ordeal was over. The bus was like a mobile target, relentlessly pursued by bird people in the sky.

“Sam, we need to find a way to shake off those bird people. Do you know if there’s a tunnel nearby?” Chen Ke asked.

“I don’t. This is my first time in Carefree City…” Sam shook his head.

“Oh… Okay,” Chen Ke replied, shaking his head and then sharply turning the steering wheel to head towards the city center.

Although there would be more cars in the city center and the roads would be more difficult to navigate, there were also places like tunnels and culverts. If they got on the freeways and viaducts, they’d really stand no chance.

“Excuse me! Is there anyone on the bus who is a local from Carefree City?” Chen Ke called out, looking back.

Ying Baiyi and the three survivors he was with lifted their heads upon hearing Chen Ke’s shout.

“I need a navigator. Who’s familiar with this place?” Chen Ke asked again.

Ying Baiyi thought for a moment then stood up and walked toward Chen Ke.

“Go forward two streets, then turn right. There is an underground tunnel there, under the pedestrian street and the city center garden.” Ying Baiyi said, grasping the handrail and standing next to Chen Ke.

Chen Ke didn’t speak, turning the steering wheel to direct the bus toward the city center garden.

“Up there, they’re coming in!” two children shouted in unison.

Upon hearing this, everyone in the bus looked up and saw several bird creatures had managed to pry open the ventilation hatch in the roof, leaving a large hole.

Sam and a few armed survivors immediately started firing at the opening. A series of crisp gunshots erupted in the bus, and the children quickly covered their ears and scrambled to the back seats.

Diana shielded the two children with her body, positioning them in a corner while she crouched down with her back facing outwards. If the bird creatures breached the bus, she could act as a human shield to protect the children for a time.

Ordinary bullets could hardly stop the bird creatures’ movements completely as they continued to charge into the bus despite the gunfire, with half their bodies already squeezed inside, not stopping even as they were hit and splattered with wax.

Chen Ke pulled out a spiritual power M1911A1 with a loaded magazine from his holster, gripped the barrel, and handed the butt end to Ying Baiyi. After hesitating for a moment, Ying Baiyi still took the gun.

“Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!” Four terrifying gunshots rang out, silver casings falling to the ground. Blinding white brilliance burst from the bodies of the two bird creatures, their heads and chests exploding into fragments, which were then consumed by the light.

The power of the Punishment bullets was astonishing and could suppress most monsters—indeed, they were the strongest Spiritual Bullets.

Chen Ke handed two more magazines to Ying Baiyi, who received them and moved to a position directly below the opening in the roof.

With the addition of spiritual power weapons, the bird creatures on the roof were quickly eliminated, and just as the bus entered the underground tunnel of the city center park, the tunnel was long, extending under a lake in Carefree City, leading to another district within the city.

After dealing with the trailing bird creatures, they had finally escaped the crisis.

Chen Ke drove further on, and Ying Baiyi returned to his seat. No one in the bus spoke, as there was a rift in their hearts, and no one was yet willing to break the silence.

“There’s a traffic jam.” Chen Ke clicked his tongue.

Earlier, only a few abandoned vehicles could be seen, but now, the path ahead was completely blocked, seemingly due to a severe rear-end collision.

In the tunnel, the traffic was neither fast nor slow, but when people turned to ash in an instant, the vehicles at around 50 mph crashed into each other like weights, and it was easy to imagine the pile-up stretching beyond the tunnel.

Chen Ke had to stop the vehicle. The sound of the diesel engine, which had filled the air just moments before, now abruptly went silent, leaving the passengers somewhat unaccustomed to the sudden quiet.

Chen Ke glanced at the tunnel sign next to him—they were 9 kilometers from the exit. He then leaned against the window to look back; no bird creatures were in pursuit. He took a deep breath, relieved that they could rest for a while.

There were now 13 people in the bus, perhaps the last survivors in the world.

Diana, sitting at the back with the two children, was relieved she didn’t need to become a shield; her injuries were severe enough, and a few more hits and she didn’t know how much more she could endure.

Ying Baiyi and the three survivors he brought with him sat together. After facing certain death, they now found themselves with a chance at life, each wearing a different expression—some of surprise, some of fear.

The two armed survivors stood by the two women, seeming to comfort each other, with a look in their eyes that suggested something remarkable, akin to love.

Chen Ke left the driver’s seat and found a place to sit, looking to Sam beside him.

Ying Baiyi had been found; now what?
