Chapter 504.3: Survivors!

At the same time, 10 armored trucks rolled out from the camp, carrying soldiers and expedition representatives heading straight for the now-secured industrial building.

The remains of the space elevator were nearby, a massive curved metal shell embedded in the ground like a hangar roof.

Word was, this colossal fragment was just a single ‘tile’, a mere piece from the original space elevator.

Just looking at these shattered remnants made it hard to imagine how magnificent that tower that passed the clouds must have been before it fell.

All four factions gathered at the foot of the building.

The towering Wislanders, clad in heavy armor, were led by a stern-faced officer with a high nose bridge and deep eye sockets. At his side stood his escort, an unusually handsome man with a distinct sense of style. It was none other than Pangolin, his trusted aide for the mission.

Wally cast a smug glance at the New Alliance soldiers, those same troops who had supposedly given his people so much grief.

He felt the Governor-general Cohen had likely appointed Pangolin as his guard just to flex on the New Alliance, but what puzzled Wally was the indifference from their side. Not a single person looked in his general direction. 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺

Did they not recognize their famed warrior?

Or were they so intimidated that they didn’t dare make eye contact?

The thought made Wally smirk.

So weak.

Well... Unlike him, Pangolin, or rather, Battlefield Cheerleader, looked extremely uncomfortable as he stood at the very front. He curled his toes into the ground.

Damn it.

This is so awkward!

Unlike the Army, the Academy kept a low profile, only a single female researcher with long black hair had shown up.

She was accompanied by a four-legged robotic dog, half her height, its broad back carrying a fully-packed bag.

She hadn’t spoken to anyone since disembarking, standing alone in a self-designated safe zone.

Academy researchers usually acted like that in the field.

Historical trauma and costly gear made nearly every Academy member suffer from a sort of persecution complex.

Not that it was unfounded, out in the Wasteland, explorers from the Academy were basically walking treasure troves. Everyone knew it.

Most of them chose to hide their past after leaving the Academy, a sharp contrast to the boastful Enterprise staff.

Survivor factions often had to weigh the risk of getting blacklisted before going after Enterprise employees, especially in the Among Clouds Province, where too much attention could get one doxxed on Endpoint Cloud and even hunted by Enterprise allies or special ops teams.

While confirming her assignment via holographic interface, Jiang Xuezhou suddenly frowned.

She felt like someone was staring at her, and she was right.

But it wasn’t a person, it was an android from Enterprise.

Staring directly at the girl from the Academy, Frost grumbled.

"Eclipse... Why aren’t we going down there too? Strictly speaking, androids shouldn’t count as people, right? Wouldn’t bringing more personnel help?"

Eclipse’s pupils flickered slightly. "They say it was the Academy’s request."

Frost frowned. "But didn’t they bring a robotic dog with an AI core too? What’s the difference?"

Eclipse was silent for a moment. "That... probably doesn’t count as a person."

Frost’s face twisted with frustration and indignation as it clenched its fists.

"Damn it... Just because it walks on all fours? It’s not like I can’t crawl!"

"...?"

As everyone waited, the corridor linking the building's main entrance to Shelter 0 had just been cleared.

Exiting the first-floor lobby with his team, Captain Yun Song of the 26th Assault Team happened to bump into Yunyi, who had just arrived.

The Enterprise had sent two representatives into Shelter 0, Yunyi, and his top scout, Su Ming.

Seeing Yunyi approach, Yun Song’s face showed rare hesitation and awkwardness. He asked in a low voice, "You... Are you sure you're okay with this?"

Yunyi gave a small nod.

"I’m fine. We’ve reached a ceasefire with the Army. Besides, they only sent two people."

"I still think the danger isn’t just from the Wislanders..."

Looking back at the abandoned building, Yun Song glanced at Yunyi again. Seeing no change in her expression, he sighed and gave up. "Just be careful in there."

Yunyi nodded succinctly. "Understood."

Nearby, watching Yun and Yun Song standing together, Night Ten leaned toward his NPC teammate and asked curiously, "Hey bro, what’s the deal between your captain and that Endpoint representative?"

He had been wondering about it for a while.

Both of them had the surname, but their vibes were completely different, like they weren’t even from the same generation.

Su Ming gave a mysterious smile. "Take a guess."

Night Ten shot him a side glance. "Stop being cryptic... I bet they’re not siblings."

"Smart guy," Su Ming gave him a thumbs up. "Keep guessing."

"... Mother and son?"

Su Ming shook his head like a rattle. "Nope. Not even close."

"Not even close in seniority? Aunt and nephew? Grandpa and grandson? Damn it, what is it?!" Getting annoyed by all the teasing, Night Ten cursed out loud.

Su Ming chuckled, "Told you you’d never guess it."

Seeing his teammate ready to explode, he leaned in and whispered, "Technically speaking... she’s our captain’s great-great-great-grandmother or something like that."

Night Ten froze. His worldview shattered instantly. "What the fuck?!"

Su Ming shrugged. "This kind of thing’s not that rare in Ideal City. One day you’re at work, and suddenly you find out that one of your ancestors who was frozen a hundred years ago and just woke up. Now they’re sitting in a hospital room, flipping through nonexistent security camera footage, thinking they’re on some hidden camera show. Everyone’s lying to them, or so they think... You get it?"

"You go to sleep, your terminal illness gets cured, and when you wake up, your retirement fund and the world you knew are both gone." He paused, then added, "For those who suddenly inherit an ancestor, it’s another kind of nightmare. Now you have to figure out how to help them adjust, and explain who you even are."

Night Ten raised his eyebrows in shock. "... Damn."

He’d never thought about it that way. Cryo-sleep into the future always sounded cool to him.

Maybe he would wake up with a cybermaid like in a game. Maybe his savings would double.

But thinking about it... that fantasy assumed that the future was better.

What if it became worse?

That was kind of terrifying.

"Anyway... I’m just using that as an example. Our captain and Ms. Yunyi have a unique situation of their own. She’s from the Prosperity Era. Her knowledge is incredibly valuable to us, make sure we protect her well."

Seeing the signal to assemble, Su Ming patted Night Ten’s shoulder with a grin. "Let’s go, bro. Time to work."
