Chapter 112: Manuscript

"I like your manuscript. It’s a well written story. Do you like to cooperate with me?" He Zeqing asked Qi Jianyi as she entered his office.

Before Qi Jianyi could take a seat, she already received his offer. It’s obvious how much He Zeqing liked the manuscript. After waiting for almost two weeks, Qi Jianyi finally sent him the manuscript. She wanted to give it to him earlier, but who let that man spout nonsense before?

Qi Jianyi took her time in replying to him. She didn’t wrong herself in the meanwhile and poured a cup of tea for herself. Sipping the fragrant tea, the young woman smiled softly as she leaned back on the couch.

Opposite her, sat He Zeqing who was patiently waiting for her. He let her take her sweet time as he continued to turn the pages of the printed manuscript.

He Zeqing still remembered how astonished he was when he first read her work. He thought Qi Jianyi’s writing could be called mediocre at most. Yet, only on the first page, he was already slapped by his wrong judgement.

Qi Jianyi’s writing and the flow of the story were impactful. It made him barely able to stop him from reading. Every word chosen, every expression, really him in the heart. He was amazed at her talents. Because her works don’t look like a novice author at all.

Only if He Zeqing knew that Qi Jianyi was never a novice author from the beginning.

"When I wrote that story, I already put it in mind that I want to make it a drama. That kind of story complements well to bring it out alive instead of publishing it as a novel. But, I don’t have any connection in this industry. Cousin, you can arrange it for me. Don’t involve me in the process. I just want to see the result." Finally, after a few minutes passed, Qi Jianyi gave her answers.

Though He Zeqing was happy when he got the result he wanted, he still felt distressed by her lack of enthusiasm for her own work. In the end, he couldn’t stop himself from giving her a piece of advice.

"What do you mean you don’t want to participate in the process of making this drama? It’s your first work after all, don’t you feel any excitement? Jianyi, listen to me. With this manuscript of yours, your drama can make it big. You will probably be sought after by many actors in the future." He patiently laid out the benefits of participating in the process.

However, Qi Jianyi was someone who already received fame and attention from all over the country. Not to mention actors, even singers came to her. They also wanted to win her favour just so they could act in her drama. Because it was well known to the public that whoever starred in her drama, their popularity skyrocketed. Even the singers who sang an OST for her drama also gained popularity.

Thus summed up the reason behind her own downfall. Because too many wished to act in her dramas, they willingly threw away money at the director. And the young Qi Jianyi, who only had one thing in mind, turned a blind eye to it and accepted whoever wished to star in it.

Unfortunately, she only did it once. And that became her biggest mistake and downfall in the entertainment industry. Because, when you adapt a drama from a novel, the readers have their own imaginations.

If you fail to live up to their imaginations, you should be ready to suffer the criticism. Hence the reason why Qi Jianyi refused to publish the manuscript as a novel and went ahead and made it as a drama. She refused to make the same mistake and let the readers have their own imaginations again.

This time, she had decided to let the director and the productions be on their own without her saying. It was different this time. There was no He Zeqing before. Now, she had a President as her backer.

No one will dare to do anything shady anymore.

"I understand what you’re trying to tell me, cousin. But I think, given my identity, it wasn’t easy for me. And not to mention, I don’t like to talk to alot of people, it’s suffocating." She deliberately gave some excuses. Anyway, it’s not like He Zeqing didn’t know her personality.

"But that doesn’t mean you have to remain in your comfort zone. You’re getting older after all. You have to start building your own networking, Jianyi." He Zeqing frowned, clearly disapproved with her ways of doing things.

"I know...But this is after all my first work, I’m just nervous. So let’s not have me included in the process. I’ll leave everything to you to handle. Next time, if there’s another opportunity, I’ll actively engage in it." She replied calmly. Her face became stoic, making He Zeqing fail to read her expression.

"Do you have any directors in your mind that are suitable for my manuscript?" Swiftly, Qi Jianyi changed the direction of their conversation.

He Zeqing said nothing and only looked at her for a while. After a few seconds, he turned away, picked up the cup on the table and drank it slowly before answering her.

"There’s one in mind. It’s Director Tang. You probably don’t know him, but he’s pretty good at his work. But the last drama he directed didn’t become a hit..." he stopped for a moment but Qi Jianyi finished it. Knowing full well what He Zeqing was getting at.

"Because of that, no actors want to work with him?" He Zeqing nodded as answer to her question.

That was He Zeqing biggest’s concern right now. That’s why he wanted her to take part in every process from the selection of the main leads to the end of its shooting. Yet, what He Zeqing was worried about was nothing to Qi Jianyi.

She shrugged and began to tell him her opinion. "You recommended him to me which means you have high expectations from him. Cousin, maybe the reason why his last drama didn’t become a hit probably due to the lack of plot. You said it yourself that my manuscript’s strength was the plot. Are you doubting your cousin’s work?" she smiled innocently while asking.

"Of course I believe in your manuscript. But, it isn’t that easy, Jianyi." Although He Zeqing understood her words, it doesn’t mean he agreed with her. He thought that, after all, Qi Jianyi was still young and lacked experience in this field.

"Who says it will be easy?" Qi Jianyi gave him a disdainful look. "With you and me behind the scenes, do you think the production will be lacking in terms of finance? No. With your recommendation of him, Director Tang is probably very good with his job. What we lack most now are actors to play as the main leads. Cousin, we don’t need to choose the most popular actors to be the main lead to attract an audience. We need talented actors." she continued, leaning in to him.

Seeing how serious she looks while breaking down all the main points to explain, He Zeqing becomes intrigued to hear the rest of it.

"Tell me in detail," he gestured to her to continue while drinking his tea with an interesting expression.

Getting his approval, Qi Jianyi smiled arrogantly before expressing her ideas. "It’s like this. When you read my story, what caught your attention the most?" she suddenly asked.

"The way your character expressed their emotions." Although he didn’t know why she asked, he still obediently answered.

Qi Jianyi nodded in satisfaction. "That’s right! It’s the way I wrote how the main characters expressed their emotions. It’s about a love story after all, it must have a lot of emotions. Do you think all actors can pull off all of those emotions? Can they act frustrated while in love? Can they act desperate, begging, kneeling, crying their heart out and let the audience cry with them? Zeqing, not all actors can do that. Even the most popular one could barely do some of those emotions." she shook her head, faking her disappointment.

"What we need in this drama is not a popular actor to create sensation. We need good talent to bring out this drama alive. To let people watch and remember it forever. We need to make it as impactful as it can be. The plot is already good, yet if the actors chosen can’t even act well, will it still be as impactful as it should be? No. Instead of choosing popular actors to make the drama well known, it should be that we make the actors who starred in this drama become famous due to our drama." Qi Jianyi patiently explained her thoughts.

"Everything is good already and we only lack talented actors. If we made the right choice. Believe me, this drama will become a hit as soon as it is released. The actor’s job will only be to act honestly. While us, the people behind the scene should do our job well in promoting the drama.

With you, the president, came forward himself to promote this drama, do you honestly believe that this drama will be a failure in the hands of Director Tang?" In the end, Qi Jianyi almost lost her voice. She sipped in her tea while raising her brows at He Zeqing. She wanted to know what he was thinking about.
