Chapter 113: His last mission

After hearing her explanation, He Zeqing couldn’t help but feel bewildered. He had always known that this cousin of his had ideas brewing in her mind, but he never realized she could analyze everything so thoroughly and always ensure to emphasize their profits.

Based on her explanation, not only would the drama do well, but even the actors would soar higher in the future. After all, no matter how popular someone is, if they don’t know how to act properly or choose the wrong drama to star in, their work will not become a hit. Eventually, they would fall behind, giving their rivals the opportunity to surpass them.

Qi Jianyi’s analysis was spot on. He Zeqing himself admitted that the plot was heart-wrenching. The central storyline revolved around the two main characters, who struggled to overcome countless obstacles just to love each other openly. Both were treasures within their respective organizations: one was a ruthless killer, and the other an untraceable hacker.

The story begins with the female lead, a hacker on the run from her enemies, disguising herself because she couldn’t contact her organization. While faking her appearance and pretending to be a harmless, shy female student, she stumbles upon the male lead, a ruthless killer who has just received orders to eliminate the hacker.

Their organizations were sworn enemies. Despite knowing they were destined to never be together, fate had its tricks. They were bound to fall in love.

However, their loyalty to their organizations created an insurmountable barrier. The female lead could only run away from him because the male lead’s sole mission at the time was to take her life. To stay close to him yet maintain her distance, she had no choice but to continue their deadly game of chase.

The male lead, however, refused to kill her after learning her identity. For the first time since entering this dark world, he decided to fail a mission. But even then, he couldn’t stop entirely, as the organization would simply send someone else.

The only way to protect her was to remain her pursuer. Thus, he continued his mission, yet each time he had the chance to kill her, he turned a blind eye and let her escape. Of course, he never forgot to steal a kiss whenever he could.

Eventually, his superiors in the organization noticed something was wrong. Their silent love was uncovered. When questioned, the male lead denied it emotionlessly. But to prove his loyalty, he was ordered to kill her and bring back her body as evidence.

How could the male lead comply? How could he kill the woman he had tried so hard to protect—the only person he loved in this cruel world?

Unfortunately, the male lead underestimated his organization. He believed they trusted him after all his years of service. Yet, as he planned to fake the female lead’s death, news leaked that the organization had dispatched ten assassins to kill her.

Realizing he had fallen into their trap, he rushed to save her. Meanwhile, the female lead, knowing her time had come, fought fiercely to defend herself.

In the end, understanding that neither of them would survive, she smiled and pulled the knife in the male lead’s hand into her own heart, sacrificing herself in the name of love and to protect him.

That moment severed the last string of loyalty in his heart. Watching the woman he loved die to save him, he sought revenge, slaughtering everyone in his organization as retribution for her life.

Each one of them died at the hands of their most ruthless killer, all because of one mistake.

That was his final mission.

Thus, Qi Jianyi named her first work in this world His Last Mission.

Because killing his beloved was his very last mission. He was known as the killer who never failed his missions.

The story conveyed a whirlwind of emotions: ruthlessness, heart-wrenching sorrow, vengeance, joy, comedy, and so much more. Only truly talented actors could bring such complex emotions to life.

Since He Zeqing personally vowed to invest in the drama, funding wasn’t an issue. He recommended Director Tang, an award-winning talent in the industry, whose credibility was unquestionable. With a strong story, sufficient funding, and a skilled director, they were well-prepared. And when it came to promotions, they had He Zeqing’s company—renowned as the biggest entertainment company for a reason. Its public relations team would handle promotions flawlessly.

In the end, the only thing they were missing, as Qi Jianyi had pointed out, was talented actors.

"Are you sure you don’t want to start your own company? You really have a knack for this industry," He Zeqing couldn’t help but suggest. He truly felt it would be a pity for Qi Jianyi if she refused to step into the business world.

With her keen sense of optimizing profits, he believed she would excel if she ever decided to establish her own business.

Qi Jianyi frowned as she heard his question. What was wrong with him? Here she was, seriously analyzing her future projects, and he still found time to persuade her to start a business.

"Cousin, I’m an economics student, you know that, right? I study both business and economics. Of course, I know a thing or two about business," she replied disdainfully. Not to mention, what she had just analyzed was something anyone could come up with if they thought hard enough.

"That’s exactly why I’m saying you really have the talent for business," he insisted.

Qi Jianyi shook her head. "I don’t want to think about that now. I just want to focus on my manuscript for the time being. Business? I can deal with it sooner or later. Let me enjoy my youth first." She neither agreed nor rejected him outright. After all, if she refused again, He Zeqing would probably keep trying to persuade her.

He Zeqing glanced at her and then shifted the conversation back to their earlier topic. "What you said is correct. Since we have everything we need and only lack talent, let’s focus on hiring skilled actors. Normally, with such a good manuscript, we would send it to popular actors who’ve won countless awards. But since we’re looking for pure talent, I’ll spread the word and give everyone a fair chance to compete for the roles. Are you sure you don’t want to participate in the recruitment process at all?" he asked again for confirmation.

Initially, Qi Jianyi had been firm in her decision because she really didn’t want to be involved in this messy industry anymore. Though she longed to see her work appreciated by others, she couldn’t find the courage to step forward herself.

The hateful words and backlash she’d endured from the public before still cast a shadow over her life. After all, it had only been two years since then. No matter how hard she tried to forget, the pain remain fresh in her mind.

Even though she didn’t want to participate in any aspect of the process, a part of her felt reluctant to let others decide which actors to cast. She worried that someone might end up choosing untalented actors solely due to personal connections.

Of course, Qi Jianyi trusted that He Zeqing wouldn’t allow any shady individuals to interfere in the recruitment process. Still, the anxiety lingered. After much thought, she swallowed her hesitation and changed her stance.

"I won’t get involved in the production process. But, cousin, let me choose the actors myself," she said, her tone resolute this time. Her determined words made it clear that nothing He Zeqing said would change her mind.

Seeing how strongly she felt about staying out of the production, He Zeqing nodded in understanding. As for her request to select the actors, he had no objections. After all, Qi Jianyi was the author, the one who knew her characters best. It was only right for her to choose the actors who caught her eye.

He Zeqing’s agreement brought a fleeting sense of relief to Qi Jianyi, though she kept her face impassive. She couldn’t let herself appear too eager—especially not when she had a very specific request in mind.

"Cousin," she began, her tone measured, "I’ll need a separate room during the auditions. Somewhere I can observe the actors without being seen."

He Zeqing wasn’t surprised by Qi Jianyi’s request to attend the auditions, but he did arched an eyebrow in mild curiosity. "Why be there in person? Wouldn’t it be easier to watch from a monitor?"

Qi Jianyi shook her head, her expression firm. "Watching through a screen doesn’t give me the same sense of their presence. I need to observe them properly—how they carry themselves, their body language, the subtleties in their expressions. A monitor won’t show me all of that."

"You realize this means the actors will have to perform twice," He Zeqing pointed out, folding his arms. "Once for the director and production team, and then again for you?"

"I know," Qi Jianyi replied without hesitation. "It’s unavoidable. I can’t make a decision based solely on someone else’s impressions or through secondhand observation. The characters are mine—I created them. Only I can decide if someone truly embodies them."

He Zeqing nodded thoughtfully. He understood her reasoning; Qi Jianyi wasn’t one to compromise when it came to her work. Still, it was an unusual arrangement, and he wanted to make sure she understood what it entailed.

"Alright, I’ll make the arrangements," he said. "But this means the auditions will take more time. The actors might find it exhausting to perform twice. Won’t that put unnecessary pressure on them?"

Qi Jianyi considered his words for a moment before replying, her voice calm but resolute. "If they can’t handle that much pressure, they’re not right for the role. I need actors who are resilient, who can deliver consistent performances even under scrutiny. If performing twice is too much for them, then they’re not what I’m looking for."

He Zeqing couldn’t argue with her logic. Her standards were high, but they were rooted in her deep understanding of the characters and the story she had poured her heart into.

"Fair enough," he said with a shrug. "I’ll let the team know. And I’ll make sure the process is seamless so we don’t waste too much time." novelbuddy-cσ๓

"Good," Qi Jianyi replied, her tone softening slightly. "This isn’t just a story to me. It’s a part of me. I need to make sure it’s in the right hands."

He Zeqing smiled faintly, admiring her quiet determination. "I’ll make it happen. Just don’t scare the actors too much with that sharp gaze of yours."

Qi Jianyi smirked but didn’t respond, already mentally preparing herself for the auditions ahead.
