Chapter 52: H... How Does One’s Finger Slip Again?

Kuzunoha’s tails curled gently around us both, not touching us, but more like air hugging or something.

"And now... you both plan to marry soon?"

"Hm? Uh. Yeah. Something like that." The lie tasted strangely sweet on my tongue.

Kuzunoha let out a long, trembling breath, then she smiled; so wide, so bright, so achingly happy that it now hurt to look at her.

I’m such a monster! I don’t deserve to live!

***

And so, I began to ad-lib the tales of our love story; how I was almost killed by monsters, and Sakura who was just visiting the human kingdom saved me in the forest. We fell in love ever since, which was a year ago, and plan to get married soon.

Kuzunoha truly was just like a big kid, clapping her hands and thrashing like a high schooler hearing a friend’s love story.

Her nine massive tails whipped back and forth behind her, each one looking thick enough to knock over trees, yet she moved them with pure, giddy excitement.

Ah, please watch where you move those, ma’am!

The massive beanbag-like thing beneath her groaned under every joyful bounce of hers, and the bluish mist around us swirled faster when she flailed, as if catching her happiness.

"Ah, this all reminds me of my own love story with Leorin," Kuzunoha smiled, but it was somewhat distant compared to before, her emerald eyes softening with memory. "Well, Benjamin Mark, you totally have my blessings. Go forth and make babies with her!"

"H-Haha-ue?!" Sakura finally spoke, shrieking in embarrassment, as her face turned a shadier red I had never seen on her before.

She waved her hands frantically, trying to shush her mother, but Kuzunoha only giggled louder.

It made one wonder: was this that same person I first met in the human kingdom of Gihon? The one that brazenly kidnapped me?

What happened to her?

Or maybe it’s just my imagination.

At that juncture Kuzunoha looked upon me again. "You... You’re a god-touched, right?"

"?!"

Both Sakura and I got surprised from her observation.

And my heart skipped a beat, while Sakura’s mouth fell open, her amber eyes wide.

"Haha-ue? How could you tell?" Sakura asked. "I hadn’t said anything about it?"

She giggled cutely and spared me an intelligent glance, with her emerald eyes sparkling with mischief. "We fellow god-touched have strong connections to each other, didn’t you know? I’ve been speaking with my best friend, Kurosawa Ren, for years now. But he’s been out of touch these days."

Ah, so she was also a god-touched? Maybe we could start a small fellowship with Ren. And why is he ignoring her?

Sakura’s mouth was still dropped from the shock, and honestly, I found it immensely adorable; the way her ears twitched in disbelief, the little furrow between her brows, the way her lips parted like she couldn’t believe what she was hearing.

"Well, yeah, I’m from Ken’s world," I responded to Kuzunoha. "Earth."

But she tilted her head, her tails pausing mid-sway. "Earth? Not Diana?"

Who the hell is that?!

And did Kuzunoha suddenly mention something odd?

She asked me if Ren was also from my world Earth, and I said yes. I mean, that was what Ren told me himself.

Then my heart sank as Kuzunoha brought her big hand and took hold of me, like I was a little puppy compared to her size.

Her palm alone was wider than my shoulders; her pink claws curved gently around my torso without piercing skin, but the sheer scale of her made my heart hammer. She lifted me effortlessly until I dangled in front of her face, my legs kicking uselessly in the air.

And just like that, my life was in danger.

"Muuuu! You’re not making fun of me, are you, Benjamin-kun?" Kuzunoha pouted, her cheeks puffing out like a child denied of candy. "Ren-chan had never once said he’s from Earth... Though, he also never said he was from Diana too."

Please, just drop me down slowly, ma’am! I don’t know what Diana even means.

[Sakura, help!] I sent a desperate cry for aid to Sakura.

[Please, forgive her, Benjamin. And please, bear with it for a while. I promise she won’t drop you] Sakura replied.

Ah!

Just after saying that, Kuzunoha missed a finger and I dropped. My stomach lurched, freefalling for a terrifying second, before she caught me again by my leg, dangling me upside down like a caught fish!

"Ah, sorry, my finger slipped," Kuzunoha brought her tongue out in cheekiness, those emerald eyes sparkling with mischief.

"H... How does one’s finger slip again?" I asked, still dangling upside down, feeling as if blood was rushing to my head.

"Well, it’s your fault! Secretly speaking with your lover while I’m still here!"

Eh?! She knew we were talking telepathically?

{Answer: it is possible. Telepathic messages are mental magical signals. The one Master and the individual Sakura shared was very precise, so normally, individuals should have no perception of it. Nevertheless, it appears the fox spirit still grasped it. But she holds no information whatsoever on the content of your messages, rest assured.}

"Ara? Is that your Spiritual Ego Partner speaking to you now?"

Sys!! She’s hearing even you!

{Apologies, Master. I have zero understanding of how she is managing to achieve such a feat.}

And with the beans spilled, I explained to Kuzunoha who Sys was and how it got sentient recently.
