On the Day I Was Kicked Out of the Wealthy Family, I Had a Flash Marriage with a Tycoon-Chapter 89: Silas Coldwell Is Talking Nonsense Again
"It’s about something else this time," Chloe Sterling replied. She paused, then asked, "Are you here to see Director Xavier, too?"
"Nah, the old man wanted to see me. He told me to come over." Julian Xavier sank lazily into Director Xavier’s office chair.
Chloe Sterling smiled. "I was wondering why you’d show up here on your own. So it was Director Xavier who called you."
"When are you leaving?" Julian Xavier asked.
"Tomorrow."
"So soon!"
"Mhm, two friends are coming with me."
A little while later, Director Xavier returned. His eyes went straight to Chloe, completely ignoring the grandson beside her.
"Chloe, you’re here too. Did you need to see me about something?"
Chloe Sterling stood up. "Director Xavier, I came to let you know that I need to make another trip to the countryside. I have to leave tomorrow."
Without even asking why, Director Xavier agreed as readily as last time. "Alright, go ahead."
After a moment’s thought, Chloe Sterling added, "I’ll bring back some fresh and rare medicinal herbs that should help with our current research project."
"You’re not planning to go into the mountains to gather herbs, are you?"
"I am. Some valuable herbs are ready for harvest right now, so I have to go back within the next few days."
"Then make sure you stay safe." 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦
"I will. Well, I’ll be going now. You and Julian can talk."
"Alright. The project has entered a stable phase, so you don’t need to worry about things here at the lab. Don’t rush back. If you want to stay a few extra days, feel free."
"Mhm."
Chloe Sterling returned to the laboratory and finished up her work for the day.
Before long, it was afternoon.
After checking the time, Chloe Sterling cleared her desk, said goodbye to a few colleagues, and left early.
She had just walked out of the lab building when a man’s figure appeared before her.
It was Silas Coldwell’s subordinate, Zane Stratton.
The man smiled faintly. "Miss Sterling, our boss is waiting for you. If you would please come with me."
Chloe Sterling gave him a cold look. "I’m not going."
"Miss Sterling, I think it would be best if you came. We are at The Medical College, after all. I’m sure you don’t want to cause a scene. You know what our boss is like; he doesn’t give up until he gets what he wants."
"Are you threatening me?"
"Not at all. I’m simply advising you."
"I don’t need your advice!" With that, Chloe Sterling started walking away.
Zane Stratton kept pace with her. She shot him a sideways glance and said coldly, "Stop following me!"
Zane Stratton chuckled. "Miss Sterling, I just happen to be going this way too."
Chloe Sterling stopped in her tracks. "Then you go first."
Zane Stratton: "..."
Seeing that he wasn’t moving, Chloe Sterling said pointedly, "What’s wrong? Not going?"
"Miss Sterling, the boss is waiting for you by the road just up ahead. It would be best if you came with me. If you don’t, he’ll..."
"Do what?"
"He said he’ll come into The Medical College and tell everyone that you’re his woman."
Chloe Sterling’s expression darkened, and she suddenly strode forward.
Zane Stratton: ’This trick works every time.’
A moment later, Chloe Sterling walked out of The Medical College, found Silas Coldwell’s car parked by the curb, and strode over, rapping sharply on the window.
The car door opened immediately, revealing Silas Coldwell’s smirking face. "Get in the car."
Her beautiful, sharp eyes stared him down. "Maybe I should slip you a potent poison," she said abruptly.
Silas Coldwell’s lips curled into a smile, tinged with a bewitching allure. "Would you have the heart?"
’He knew Chloe Sterling. She put on a cold, ruthless front, but in reality, she wasn’t capable of anything truly cruel.’
’She only knew how to save people, never to kill or harm them.’
Silas Coldwell got out of the car, and Chloe Sterling immediately took two steps back. He frowned slightly and sneered, "Jasper Lockwood isn’t here. Do you really need to keep this much distance between us?"
"Silas Coldwell, even a cornered rabbit will bite. Don’t think I won’t actually do something to you!"
"You won’t!" Silas Coldwell stared at her, his voice certain. "If you wanted me dead, why would you have saved me last time?"
"I only saved you so I could negotiate with you—to get you to stop bothering Jasper Lockwood."
"Wrong." A glint flashed in Silas Coldwell’s eyes. "You wanted to save me. You didn’t want anything to happen to me. You care about me. If you just wanted to help Jasper Lockwood, you should have helped those people finish me off. That would have solved all your problems for good."
Chloe Sterling: "..."
’She couldn’t bring herself to harm him, but that didn’t mean she cared about him!’
’Is this guy just overconfident, or is he doing this on purpose?’
Silas Coldwell gave a wicked grin. "Baby, just admit it. You can’t forget what we went through. You’ve always cared about me. Come with me. I have a surprise for you."
Hearing this, Chloe Sterling was even more speechless.
’What "what we went through"? He got hurt, she happened to save him, and they were in contact for a short while. That’s it.’
She was just about to call him out on his nonsense when, before she could speak, Jasper Lockwood’s voice came from behind her.
"Chloe."
Chloe Sterling spun around, suddenly understanding why Silas Coldwell had been spouting such nonsense.
’He’d said it all for Jasper Lockwood to hear.’
A smug look crept onto Silas Coldwell’s face as he deliberately provoked Jasper Lockwood. "President Lockwood, I didn’t know you had a habit of eavesdropping on private conversations. That’s not a very becoming trait."
Jasper Lockwood’s expression remained impassive, his voice cool. "I’m also quite shocked. I didn’t realize President Coldwell had a hobby of harassing another man’s wife and clamoring to be the other man."
Silas Coldwell’s expression faltered for a second before he regained his composure and smiled. "She was mine to begin with. Before she came to Crestfall, she belonged to me. President Lockwood, you’re the other man."
Before Jasper Lockwood could speak, Chloe Sterling spoke first, "Silas Coldwell! Stop spouting nonsense!"
"I’m speaking the truth," Silas Coldwell said, his lips curling into that wicked smirk. "Baby, no matter how much you deny our past, it exists. And it’s a fact that you care about me."
Realizing he was deliberately trying to provoke them, Chloe Sterling said sternly, "Silas Coldwell, Jasper Lockwood isn’t an idiot. This nonsense of yours is pointless."
Silas Coldwell snorted. "You and I both know perfectly well whether I’m lying or not. Oh, by the way, Auntie Vera was just mentioning you a few days ago. She asked when you were coming back home. You always did love her cooking."
"You..." Chloe Sterling was speechless with anger. ’She had never said any such thing! Besides, Auntie Vera was the housekeeper; she didn’t even cook.’
Jasper Lockwood suddenly wrapped an arm around her shoulders, pulling her into his embrace. His thin lips curved. "Darling, I believe you."
Chloe Sterling: "..."
Silas Coldwell: "..."
Jasper Lockwood added, "I trust your taste is better than that. No need to waste our breath. Let’s go."
The tips of Chloe Sterling’s ears turned slightly red. She nodded. "Mhm."
The two of them turned and walked toward Jasper Lockwood’s SUV.
Silas Coldwell stared at their retreating figures, his handsome face darkening. He was so furious his eyes looked ready to pop, practically fuming.
’That bastard, Jasper Lockwood!’
Seeing his boss’s furious expression, Zane Stratton stood to the side, not daring to make a peep, hardly daring to breathe.
Only after their car had disappeared from sight did Silas Coldwell grit out, "Find me one!"
Zane Stratton paused, confused. "Find what?"
"Keep looking for a top-level pharmacist. We *must* break her Enchanting Fragrance. I’ll get her back, or my name isn’t Coldwell!"
