Chapter 32: Call of the Night

Immediately they left the restaurant, the first thing Wise did was to get Rosa a mask. He still knew little about her circumstances and to make sure she was safe, at least for now he had to conceal her identity.

Her mask was not as large as the one he had tucked in his shirt, it was a simple domino mask with shimmering jews and light blue vine like patterns on its body.

Rosa did not argue, she simply put on the mask when he told her to, she was pretty excited by the idea of wearing one since many people still had masks on.

"Are we going to the bathhouse now?" She asked as she walked by his side, her eyes lingering on every single thing they went by.

...Like everything in her own city was strange to her.

Wise grabbed onto her hand. "Not yet, we have far too many things to do before then," he said, just before he suddenly pulled her along with him.

Rosa let out a yelp as she hurried up to catch up to Wise. Her hair was billowing in the wind and she was using her free hand to shift the stray strands that flew in her face.

"W-wait, slow down!" She screamed just before letting out a giggle as they ran past multiple people.

Wise turned to glance at her, winking just before he increased his speed.

By the time they arrived at their destination, Rosa was hunched over, her hands on her knees as she took heavy breaths while laughing.

"Y-you are r-really fit." She managed to say to Wise who was still standing, not even breaking a sweat.

After catching her breath, Rosa raised her head only to see that they were in front of a wooden shack.

Wise smiled and pointed at the shack, They sell the best beef skewer I’ve tasted in this city, and they open right about—"

Clack!

The large window of the shack had suddenly opened and out of it came the most lovely aroma they had perceived all evening.

Rosa’s eyebrows were raised in surprise while Wise was rubbing his hands together. "You have to get here on time or else..."

When Rosa turned back, she realised. That a long line had formed behind her, over twenty people lined up to have a taste of the mystery meat.

Immediately the chef saw Wise, he smiled. "You’re first again today? The usual, right?"

Wise nodded. "Make it two servings this time." He took their food from the man and they both began to stroll down the street.

"Come on, try it."

Rosa eyed the meat. She knew little about food like this but from the scent, she could already hear her stomach rumbling.

She lifted the meat by the stick and watched as a dark sauce dripped down the meat.

"Here goes nothing!" Rosa took a tiny bite of the meat and chewed...

She took another bite, and then another until the meat was halfway gone.

"Mmmmmm, how is it this good?" She asked, staring at the meat before she took another bite.

Wise laughed, he watched as she devoured the meat skewer within seconds, and when she was done she turned to face him.

"Can I have some of yours?" Rosa was showing a tiny level of greed that he didn’t not know she had.

"You want my meat?"

’Wait... that doesn’t sound right.’

Before Wise could give a reply, Rosa grabbed a meatball from his stick, stuffed it into her mouth and ran away.

"Hey!" Wise exclaimed before giving chase, he let her have the upper hand for some time, watching as she giggled and playfully ran right up until he caught her.

"I’m sorry, I’m sorry." She said, but Wise had a feeling she was anything but sorry.

They had gone a bit deeper into the city. By his left was a woman roasting corn and some other food over a fire while at the right was a clothing shop.

Wise glanced at what Rosa was wearing, they were clothes on a fast track to becoming rags.

"Want to go shopping?"

Rosa looked herself over and frowned. "I can’t let you go so far for—"

Before she could finish her sentence, Wise had already grabbed onto her wrist and pulled her into the shop, causing her eyes to widen in shock.

He walked up to the woman in charge and placed four silver coins in her hands. "Fit her with the best clothes you have, there are two more silver coins waiting for you if I’m very pleased."

The woman’s eyes glistened with greed and before Rosa could protest, she pulled her into the next room.

A few seconds passed and Rosa came out donning a new fit. It was a long winter coat, paired up with fitted trousers and a leather handbag.

It was far better than the rags she had on earlier, but—

"Too formal."

The shopkeeper adjusted her glasses once again and pulled Rosa into the room.

They emerged a minute later in a new set of clothes. Wise winced the moment he set eyes on her, the first thing he noticed was the colour... everything was pink.

A pink flowery skirt that went down to her knees, a pink jacket with white highlights and black shoes.

It was not bad, but still—

"Too... cute."

Rosa yelped as she was once again pulled deeper into the dressing room only to emerge later.

This time, Wise coughed immediately when he saw her. She wore a black body hug gown that clung to her figure, accentuating her curves.

The gown had a dark intricate pattern strewn across the chest as though to draw notice to her cleavage. It was short, a few centimeters above her mid-thigh and showed off her flawless skin.

Adding to that, a stylish split was cut upward, as though it wasn’t provocative enough as it was.

And to crown it all, Rosa innocently did a twirl to showcase the clothing.

Wise looked away from the scene. He could already hear the quiet buzz of the system’s presence.

"Too hot..."

In a low moment of pervertedness. Wise then quickly added, "Actually, this might be perfe—" Before he could finish his sentence, Rosa was once again pulled back into the room.

***

After shopping for clothes, Wise took Rosa to a place he had heard of on his first night here. But when they arrived, all that met them was a wide open field.

There was a short fence blocking intruders from entering but Wise easily jumped over it.

He reached from over the fence and to Rosa’s surprise lifted her above it as though she weighed nothing more than a piece of paper.

"What is this place?" She asked, letting her curiosity get the best out of her.

Wise began to walk towards a large building not too far away from them. "Do you know how it feels to fly?"

It was a strange question for an Ork, but it was the only way wise could describe the feeling.

Rosa chuckled. "I’m not a bird am I?"

Wise noticed that she had gotten far more lively, even throwing in jokes every now and then.

He stopped at the building and pushed the doors open. "Well, this is the closest to flying you can get."

Inside the room were several rows of horses, each lined up according to their height.

Rosa stared at them with childish curiosity. "Are we going horseback riding?" She had seen horses pull carriages before and had probably been on some in the past but she had never ridden one.

"But isn’t this place closed?"

Wise shrugged as he freed one of the horses, a black stallion with a majestic presence. A devious smile appeared on his lips, "Who is going to tell them?"

He pulled the horse outside, underneath the star-filled sky and lifted Rosa to sit atop it.

Then he sat behind and stretched his hands in front of her to hold onto the reins.

"Ready?" He asked, his voice reassuring, but Rosa looked down at the height of the drop if she were to fall.

"I guess, Woah—"

Rosa screamed as the horse charged forward, charging through the empty field. The wind was rushing past her face and ears swiftly, creating a whistling sound in her ear.

She had unconsciously closed her eyes out of fear. After a few seconds, and realising she was still atop the horse, she opened them, starting with one eye and then the next.

When Rosa saw the scene in front of her she gasped.

The world was speeding past her at breathtaking speed, the wind was blowing against her and forcefully permeating her clothes, caressing her skin and creating a feeling of lightness.

It was... as if she was flying.

She screamed once more, but this time it was not a scream of terror but one of excitement.

Tears of joy streamed down her face but at the same time it, was tingled with a certain degree of sadness.

Rosalind could not recall what would cause such a pronounced reaction and frankly, she did not care.

Not now...

She leaned backward onto Wise’s chest, comforted by his warmth—

As they raced into the night.
