Chapter 48: Chapter 48 Red Zone

The mutated tree shuddered before collapsing completely. The tree’s trunk fell onto the road with a loud noise.

Everyone finally breathed a sigh of relief, looking at the fallen tree.

"Oh my God! That mutated tree was feeding on zombies," Dylan said, panting hard.

"If we hadn’t come..." Serena said.

"It would’ve grown even stronger," Major Kyle said with a grave expression.

Leo hurriedly helped heal the injured team members while others kept watch. Maybe it was because the mutated tree had consumed all the nearby zombies to strengthen itself. There were no zombies in the vicinity.

"Sylas, show me the mutated tree’s energy stone," Major Kyle said, walking towards Sylas.

Sylas took out the energy stone from his pocket and handed it to Major Kyle. Even though he wanted to keep it for himself to upgrade his space, he couldn’t, as everyone present saw him taking out the energy stone.

"Why didn’t you keep it inside your space? It would be much safer," Shuan suddenly said. 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖

A few pairs of eyes immediately landed on Sylas.

"I tried, but couldn’t store the energy stone in my space, so I kept it in my pocket in a hurry," Sylas said, making up an excuse.

No one would know anyway whether he was lying or not, so he was not worried about others finding out.

"Why is that?" Serena asked, confused.

Major Kyle and the others also had the same question.

"Maybe because of the clash of the two types of energies," Major Kyle said after contemplating for a few seconds.

"Just like how we cannot absorb energy stones of different abilities other than ours!" Shuan said.

Sylas didn’t comment on anything, he simply let them think whatever they wanted. He was not going to tell them the truth.

"Apart from Serena, who has a plant ability, no one will be able to absorb this mutated tree’s energy stone. So I suggest giving this energy stone to Serena. I know all of you worked hard to take down the mutated tree, but this is the only solution I can think of. It would be a waste in our hands. So what do you guys think?" Major Kyle said, seeking everyone’s opinion.

"I agree with Major. Since it’s of use to us, why not give it to Serena? If her strength increases, it would be helpful for all of us," Dylan said, nodding his head.

"If her strength increases, it will elevate our team’s strength, so I don’t have a problem with it too," Shuan said.

Sylas also agreed. Even if he wanted the energy stone, he wasn’t that greedy or in a hurry to upgrade his space. There would be other opportunities in the future. Instead of exposing his secrets, it was better to give it away.

Seeing everyone agree to it, Major Kyle handed the mutated tree’s energy stone to Serena.

The energy stone of this mutated tree was a bit bigger than the size of a marble, and it was a deep, darker shade of green. It looked like an emerald, very different from the energy stone of the Devil’s Trumpet Flower.

"Thank you, everyone. In case we come across other mutated beings with abilities the same as yours, I will do my utmost to help obtain it," Serena sincerely thanked everyone, holding the energy stone in her hand.

This was already the second time the team had given her an energy stone. Both times, she didn’t help out much but ended up benefiting the most among all. She felt a little guilty and ashamed at the same time.

"Don’t worry too much about it and just absorb it. In the future, we will all rely on you to get food," Dylan patted Serena on her shoulder to ease her guilt.

Everyone nodded their heads. Food would become scarce sooner or later, and at that time, people with plant abilities like Serena would be in an advantageous situation since they could grow their own crops. All they needed was a seed, and they would be able to produce food. So no one said anything, as they all wanted to get on the good side of her.

Seeing everyone willing to give the energy stone to her, Serena was finally at ease.

"Okay, let’s go. Serena, you can absorb the energy stone in the car," Major Kyle said, getting into the car.

"Those who were sitting in the damaged cars adjust into the trucks for now," Major Kyle said.

Sylas looked at the energy stone in Serena’s hand one last time before getting into the car.

He knew that the energy stone of the mutated tree seemed to be of a higher level. It was even higher than the energy stone of the mutated bleeding heart vine he had obtained the other day.

The road ahead was clear without any zombies, and they soon reached the convenience store in a few minutes.

"Looks like the mutated tree had indeed consumed all the nearby zombies," Leo said, getting out of the car.

The area they were currently in was marked as a red zone, but because of the mutated tree, there were no zombies. This was both good and bad for them.

"Everyone stay alert. Just because there are no zombies here doesn’t mean we can relax. There are other mutated creatures too, so be alert," Major Kyle warned them in a stern voice.

"Dylan and Shaun, you guys are responsible for guarding the area with the other soldiers. All of you listen to them. Serena and I will accompany Sylas inside the convenience store to take the supplies," Major Kyle instructed before leading Sylas into the convenience store.

Because of Sylas’ space existence, there was no need for them to transport goods to the truck manually.

Serena and Major Kyle dealt with a few zombies inside the convenience store, while Sylas focused on storing the goods inside his space.

After filling his space, he made a trip outside to load the goods into the truck and went back to the store to fill his space again. At the same time, Sylas discreetly stored many goods in his space for his own use, too.
