Chapter 41: Polaris Circle (1)

Without giving much thought, he activated his [Character Sheets] skill on his supervisor first.

A faint shimmer of sapphire page crossed his field of vision, settling just long enough for the context to form.

Since Airin was a character he had never encountered in the original novel, his curiosity outweighed anything else.

If she was to guide their Circle for the foreseeable future, then knowing the kind of person she was would only help him navigate what lay ahead.

The [Character Sheet] unfolded in his vision.

The translucent data hovered before him, each line painting a clearer picture of the woman standing at the front of the chamber.

As the characters faded from view and the sheet dissolved into nothing, Ruvian let the information settle.

’She’s 2 years older than my previous life? I thought she’s younger than that.’

’And about her stats...’

Honestly, Ruvian felt a faint sense of disappointment as Airin’s Runeheart settled before his eyes.

Mainly, not because her stats were outright poor, but because they sat uncomfortably close to the lower boundary of what Velthia considered acceptable for an instructor.

’Hm, compared to the named instructors like Edvoss and Veliana... her stats feel lacking. I was hoping for something more extravagant.’

He did not need to check twice to understand what that meant.

Second-Class Magus, was the academy’s minimum requirement for an instructor, and Airin Rosvy fit that standard precisely, no more and no less.

By Velthia’s definition, she already qualified.

But by Ruvian’s expectations, she fell a bit short.

Hence, in simpler terms, she was not particularly strong as he was hoping for. That judgment lingered only briefly before his reasoning crept into his head.

’But it makes sense I guess.’

Velthia could not possibly be staffed entirely by exceptional figures, nor would those figures want to remain even if the academy somehow managed to gather them.

Anyone who advanced beyond Second-Class rank, had little reason to confine themselves within academy walls when the world outside offered far better prospects.

Adventurers, mercenaries, and those affiliated with the Magus Spire enjoyed prestige, wealth, authority, and access to resources that no teaching position could rival.

Compared to such paths, the role of an instructor amounted to little more than patience demanded in exchange for limited returns.

The stability was undeniable, but the pay was modest, they were rarely appealed to those with ambition.

That reality, more than anything else, explained Velthia’s standards.

’I mean, everyone in this world would risk their life over fame and wealth... it’s a world of adventurers, after all.’

So in conclusion, Second-Class Magus was chosen as the baseline because it represented those willing to stay as an educator.

Anyone who is strong will just opt for a better path.

And anyone who is weak, they won’t have any other path than a mundane one.

Seen through that lens, Airin’s presence no longer felt disappointing to him. She met the requirements and likely possessed the temperament needed for that position.

If anything, the fault lay with Ruvian himself, for expecting more from someone who had never promised him anything in the first place.

’Hopefully, she’s very great at teaching.’

Later, instructor Airin guided them to another section, into a room where the door automatically opened.

"The weapons you selected earlier were transferred here." Airin said, turning back to face them.

Along the curved walls stood a series of weapon racks, each slot marked with a scholar’s name.

She gestured toward the racks.

"For today, I want each of you to retrieve your weapon and perform a basic handling sequence. I will teach you some basic spells and skills that you can use while at it."

"Go ahead," Airin added with a small nod. "Noelle."

Noelle stepped forward first confidently.

Her rack responded immediately, the runes flaring softly as two slim daggers slid free from their mounts before dropping neatly into her hands.

She tested the black twin blade’s weight with a few small rotations of her wrists, then smiled satisfactorily.

Then, she moved to the other section, where a large white circular arena recessed slightly into the floor.

Noelle flowed across the arena in short, precise steps. The daggers traced quiet arcs through the air, crossing and separating with smooth familiarity.

Sometimes, her figure even vanished like a shadow.

’Hmm, isn’t that... [Shadow Phase] spell? So, she can use that.’

Ruvian quietly noted. He was familiar with that spell. After all, it was one of the spells that Zian Herga always spammed.

Finally, he decided to inspect her [Character Sheet].

’Hm. Her stats are actually not that bad for Class E. And with her Mana Resonance already at 60, she must have gone through proper training, with at least a few spells and skills in her arsenal.’

That much was obvious.

Mana Resonance did not increase on its own. To gain it, one either had to kill Voidspawn or devote time to training spells and skills.

There was no other way around it.

And that was not even accounting for one detail.

’She even has an affinity.’

’Darkness at that too.’ 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚

Before the thought could settle, Griffer suddenly dropped a hand onto Ruvian’s shoulder, entirely unprompted.

"Tch. If she can pull that off, I’ll do something way better."

Griffer said with a grin. With that, he strode off toward the weapon racks, already acting as if the outcome was decided.

Ruvian remained where he was, his eyes remained fixed on the spot where Griffer’s hand had been.

He quietly sighed and brushed his shoulder off, irritation flickering across his thoughts.

’Now I’m curious... what kind of weapon he picked that made him so proud.’

Griffer stopped in front of his assigned rack and placed a hand against the rune-inscribed frame. The markings glowed, then released their hold.

A spear slid free with a muted hum and dropped into his grasp.

’A spear?’

Ruvian watched from a distance, his expression unchanged.

It was an ordinary thing.

A standard academy training spear, forged from tempered alloy. The shaft was dark and unadorned. The spearhead was narrow and sharp-edged.

It looked exactly like what it was meant to be.

A tool issued by the academy, nothing more.

Griffer rolled the weapon once in his palm, testing its balance. Then he turned his head and glanced back at Ruvian.

’Now, watch me.’

That’s what his face was trying to say.

Griffer flashed him a crooked smirk for no reason before slinging the spear over his shoulder.

Then, he walked toward the arena where Noelle was practicing.

’Why is he smirking at me?’

That thought came quietly, without heat, but it stuck in his mind.

’Does he think this is a competition?’

Either way, it was pointless.

’Haa... whatever.’

With a faint sigh, Ruvian activated his skill.

Griffer Noktz’s Runeheart began to take shape before his eyes.
