Chapter 66: A Quick Defeat

Rem looked down on Andar, his fists clenched and radiated with soul energy. Andar stared back at Rem, his lips pushed tightly against each other in the dark alleyway he was scurrying through, the demon’s eyes flashed as gusts of wind surged into the air heading toward Rem but the Apprentice didn’t waver, his five fingers raised into the air.

A beam of magic shot into the air and the sky rumbled, filling up with dark clouds. The gusts of wind hadn’t reached Rem yet and as they were about to touch him, it was like they were cut in half... a massive pillar of lightning descended from the sky, accompanied by other Thunderbolts with their figures being locked onto Andar.

’That’s Tobi’s technique,’ Andar thought in surprise – he could vividly remember all the times Tobi tried perfecting it to become a dangerous technique but here Rem was, using the technique instantly without any problems... almost like he mastered it.

’This guy is a monster,’ Andar thought while turning around, there were plenty of corpses around and they had already lost their essences, without their essence, they were completely useless to him. He channeled the last bits of his magic into his arms, he already knew that there was no way to dodge the attack so he might as well push it back.

Rem kept observing the city from his height, he could see the corpses littering the streets and even the houses... his eyes were constantly searching for their essences and then they picked up on something.

Whenever a Human was killed, their souls didn’t flow upward into the air and shot into the sky, no, the souls dissipated within the human body. As a human was killed, their essences didn’t have any functions and the dissipation process would begin, it took a total of a day for human souls to dissipate entirely but of course there would always be some stragglers, linked to the Earth by a new sole purpose – some remained to watch over their loved ones, some remained to kill their killers, some even remained to watch their businesses.

The body becoming cold is one of the effects of the soul dissipating, nobody knew where the souls went after dissipating but one thing was for certain, they vanished.

Despite most of the human souls in Reifall had been deceased, a few stragglers were roaming the streets – Rem didn’t care whatever they remained on Earth for but he knew that they would ascend his level of power and that was all they had to do...

[10 Soul Stragglers have been detected, Would you like to absorb them? Y/N]

Rem quickly tapped on Y and all the soul stragglers shot into his body, Andar stared at Rem with a surprised gaze... he couldn’t believe it, he just couldn’t.

"There were souls?!"

Although he couldn’t perceive the shape of these souls like Rem, he could sense that his nourishment was freely shooting through the air and heading toward Rem. That was the main course of attraction within a human body and he fed on it, he fed on it to make himself stronger and now upon seeing all of the nourishment shoot toward Rem, it made him feel like Rem was stealing his food... all the food that he killed!

The Stragglers shot toward him from different parts of the town and even one came from the outside of Cole’s house...

They all combined with Rem and he continued gazing at Andar, trying desperately to push back against the bombardment of shockwaves – he heard Andar’s shout and that indicated that he could perceive the souls which Rem had consumed.

"If only I had arrived earlier..."

If he had arrived earlier, during the time that they had all been killed, he could have absorbed the soul of an entire town and the leap and bounds that would give him in power was already certain, he would have been far stronger.

A pulsating wave of wind attempted to push the Thunderbolts backward but they didn’t last long, Andar apparently didn’t have much Magical energy to spare but it was enough for their real purpose – to provide a route for escape.

Andar pushed Magical energy into his back and two wings sprouted out, Rem was surprised but he was unfazed. He gripped the edge of a tall building and heaved himself upward then began sprinting to where he believed Andar would cross on his way out while concealing his soul energy to the bare minimum.

As Andar delayed the strike from the thunderbolts, he propelled himself through the air and evaded them ... letting them hit the ground with incredible force but Andar never looked back, he knew Rem was still in the air and with this newly gained speed, he would be able to evade anything Rem had to throw at him.

He rounded another alleyway and suddenly a green glint of light appeared, he could barely fathom what the green glint of light was as both of his wings were instantly severed.

Blood shot out from his back as he hit the ground face-first, turning around to witness what had hit him only for a single blade, created and refined by soul energy to position itself at his neck.

"Don’t move,"

Even before he heard the voice, Andar was already able to discern who the owner of this voice was – Rem, his soul energy had dispersed but Andar hadn’t paid any attention to him then and that was his mistake, now he was regretting it.

He tried to regenerate his wounds but they weren’t able to which was surprising, his wounds usually healed instantly.

"Can you guess what’s happening to you?" Rem asked, he was chuckling as well and sounding so darn cold while doing so.

"You ever heard of a state when all the magical energy in your body ceases to function? Apparently it’s called Magical exhaustion and that’s what you’re experiencing right now," Rem informed while leaning closer to Andar, "You’ve exhausted all of your magical energy and now your body can’t even perform basic healing – Weak,"

Rem taunted him, Andar could only watch the human. Without magical energy, he was just as useless as a regular human and at that point, even Cavaliers and Magus would be able to make quick work of him.

"You want to die?" Rem asked, "Or you want to live?"

Andar’s eyes which were originally lifeless upon realizing his situation flashed with interest but Rem’s next words took everything away.

"Just kidding," Rem said with a singular slash, that slash was able to cut through his neck in an instant and his body soon lay lifeless on the ground.

Rem absorbed his soul and found out that he wasn’t a Demon shapeshifter but rather a Demon Reaper, it seemed that he was apparently stronger than Tobi. This confirmed his suspicions, someone had apparently beat the Demon before he did and whoever did that was very strong.

’At his full power, I might have had some trouble,’ Rem thought but he doubted that the guy was all-powerful in his full power, but there was one thing he was sure about and it was the fact that he was vastly intelligent, he knew how to turn the tides in his favor and knew exactly when to escape and how to use his limited magical energy to the maximum – that was one characteristic of a warrior and Rem respected that but there was one thing Rem could not ignore, Andar had looked down on him.

"So... what happened to the town in the first place?" Rem wondered while scratching the back of his head, ultimately he decided to head back to Orion and just remain stationary there – He had to visit the Black Market as well and sell his goods, plus he was to receive a reward from the Mayor sometime later and he didn’t want to miss that.

"It was probably linked to this guy," Rem said, "But it doesn’t matter, once those Cavaliers come back from the wild goose chase in the Forest of Death – they will head straight to this place and I have to erase all traces that I’ve been here and head back,"

But before Rem had to do anything else, he dragged the body of Andar away while kicking his head into the distance – he brought it to the location of two splatters of blood with grown men in them, the blood around them was dried but one could see that they were not regular humans.

’Interesting,’ Rem thought, he just saw something which would strengthen him even more, ’Visiting this ghost town reaped more rewards than ever,’
