Chapter 57: An Untimely Confrontation

Emerging at the top of a high building, the masked man in a suit stared below at the town – he sighed as he began tugging on his tie.

"It’s hard being a private detective," He muttered under his breath and dusted his clothes, that woman... she was on the verge of pulverizing him but he had escaped with his ability to submerge into shadows, although her words seemed to vibrate with truth.

"You don’t trust what people say in this line of work," He muttered, "Besides the mayor told me to investigate everyone including the surviving apprentices – they weren’t suspects as their soul energy hadn’t been honed to such heights, besides they have no traces of magical awakening,"

"But that mansion... what the hell are they feeding those kids?" He wondered, he saw very capable displays of soul energy usage, especially from the beastkin who seemed to have a vast amount of it but there was truth to Maybel’s words – they couldn’t have done it, not clear out an entire graveyard at night.

’I need to get the whereabouts of the other two,’ The Magus thought as he jumped down from the building, his figures melding into the shadows below and vanishing.

The Shadow Detective was well-known around Orion town, a Magus that decided to take on the role of a detective shortly after graduating from the Magus Academy – no one knew how much he graded or why he never decided to tread the path of a Battle Magus but they knew his skills were formidable. There were few Magus that had the ability to control shadows and the Shadow Detective was part of the few people capable of wielding it.

The masked man emerged from the shadows, next to an inn which accurately seemed to be the one that Rem was sleeping in yesterday.

He didn’t become a Combat magus, because his abilities were not suited for Combat, despite being a Shadow magus – his abilities were strictly leaned toward support, he only had two abilities: The first one was to merge with the shadows to hide as well as move his body, as long as there existed a lot of shadows – he could easily jump from one shadow to the other and maintain his momentum.

The second ability was shadow constriction which was a multi-purpose spell, by utilizing shadows, he could create a tendril or multiple tendrils of shadows to attack as well as defend himself.

But even his Shadow Constriction ability required immense shadows and couldn’t extend it’s reach during the daytime, so unless he fought in an area which had a lot of darkness, there was no way his abilities would actually help him – but they worked extremely well at night time, the darkness that pervaded everywhere during the night worked to the Detective’s advantage.

Pushing open the door to the inn, the Magus entered... everyone seemed to stop what they were doing instinctively as they stared at his figure, it wasn’t a bulky adventurer but rather that of an average man, but they were still afraid of him – his dressing, everything about him seemed strange and out of place. Especially that mask, depicting that of an owl.

With each step he took, the darkness in the room seemed to pulsate outward until he arrived at the counter, staring the receptionist dead in the eye.

"You know a kid? About this big," He said while descending his left arm to Rem’s height, "Black hair, gray eyes, emotionless face, the list is endless – should I go on?"

The receptionist shuddered and nodded her head.

"He came here yesterday and left this morning," She said, "I can show you to the room he stayed if you want,"

The man nodded and described Cole but she had not housed or seen Cole either, soon they were led to the room where Rem slept and both noticed it was clean... clean and arranged, The Man stepped into the room and sighed.

"If this kid was the one, he made sure to clean his tracks quite impressively," The Magus said but he instantly shut the windows and drew down the curtains, covering the room in darkness.

’But! He can’t hide anything from the shadows,’ He thought while bringing his arm up – the shadows morphed forward like bubbles, covering the ground by their ethereal black figures. Shortly after, the Magus dropped his arm and sighed once again, the bubbles dissipating like they never existed.

’Nothing suspicious here,’ The Detective thought, ’Maybe I should drop the investigation on Rem,’

The detective gave a nod to the woman and soon submerged into the shadows, causing the receptionist to take a step back in surprise.

’Where do I start from?’ He thought as he was on the rooftop once again, this time he was sitting with his palms on his knees – the whole case seemed so eerie, there shouldn’t be a probable reason for exploring kids in the first place. There weren’t supposed to have...

His eyes suddenly widened within the mask, he began moving across the buildings, leaping from building to building with precision. Despite being a Magus, he had competent physical abilities. It took him three minutes to make his way to the outskirts and there he noticed a crimson haired boy walking alongside a younger girl with crimson hair.

’Cole!’ The Magus recognized the boy within an instant – he had seen him once or twice but this Cole looked different, no not only did he look different but he felt different... more dangerous.

Cole pulled his hand into his pocket and stared at the Detective.

"Who are you?" He asked.

"I’m just here to ask you some questions," The Magus replied as he reached into his own pocket, hoping to feel his identification card as a detective only to see that the boy had propelled forward at such an amazing speed.

’He’s fast,’ The Magus thought as he leapt back, dodging the strike with a sigh, ’My abilities don’t work in the sun,’

The obvious disadvantage left him bitter on the inside, this was one of the reasons he didn’t want to become a battle-oriented Magus. Cole withdrew his hand from his pocket and pulled out a Soul Pistol.

’Oh Fuck!’ He cried out inwardly.
