Chapter 47: The Gym

A blue haired girl who looked just about 12 years old trembled as she saw a Blue portal appear directly atop her house – a dungeon gate.

The phenomenon of dungeon gates was directly after opening, they would suck anything within a meter’s range of them and that was what happened, Mika witnessed her house as well as her parents get sucked into the dungeon... their bodies flailing in the air helplessly, she clenched her fist and dashed toward them.

"Mom! Dad!"

As they crossed over to the other side of the gate, Mika heard her Mom’s distant screams vanish immediately – drowned by the dungeon, never to be heard again.

"Mom? Dad?" Mika muttered beneath her lips as multiple gates appeared in the sky, It was hell on earth... slowly the gates began shaking and monsters emerged from their ethereal figures but Mika could only focus on the gate where her Mom and Dad went into.

Her breathing turned haggard as monsters emerged from the gate, Hellhouds... and their black snouts were painted with blood.

’This isn’t real... is it?’ Mika thought while gritting her teeth, the markings on her shoulder began glowing dangerously, a fierce scream escaped her mouth as she began charging to the Hellhounds, eager to settle it once and for all.

A blur of black, as silent as the night itself picked her up and began moving in the opposite direction, jumping from building to building ever so fluently. She was hung over his shoulders and upon realizing that they were going away from the Monsters which had killed her parents, she hit the man’s back but he didn’t stop moving.

"Why?! Why did you keep me away?!" She cried out, tears rolling down her azure eyes as she pursed her lips.

"Because you would have died... if you want to exact revenge then there’s a different way to do it," The man said without facing her, "Instead of trying to kill Hellhounds with your miniscule strength, how about training and honing your skills then killing all hellhounds in the world?"

"Everybody loses their families when a Dungeon break happens, and you’re no different," He said while continuing his silent movements, "But do you see them charging to face Hellhounds like an idiot?"

Mika was silent, her gaze unclear but she remembered one thing that this man said.

"Mark it..."

"Mark what?"

"C-rank gates are Blue, on the inside, you’ll see Hellhounds," He said, "So if you’re planning to exact any revenge, you better do it in a dungeon,"

The strange man’s words after that were unclear and Mika remembered waking up, slumped against a tree but the man was nowhere to be found – she was questioned a bit on how she managed to escape, but after the interrogation, she had learned that the town had been destroyed by the Monsters.

"Why do you want to know?" Rem asked, his expression still remaining resolute – he was uninterested in anything she had to say.

"Did you see any hellhounds?" Mika asked, clenching her fist tightly... the memory of those beasts would forever be engraved into her heart.

’Hellhounds?’ Rem thought while pondering deeply, ’Oh... Yes, I think that monster might be called a Hellhound – it was similar to the Death Wolf after all, albeit more powerful though,’

"Yes," Rem said, "Big monsters with black fur and amazing speed, they hunt within the dungeon but I wasn’t a target,"

"Huh?" Mika asked.

"I hid away," Rem replied, becoming annoyed at the fact that everyone kept asking him, how did he emerge from the dungeon? How else did he do it... by clearing it!

"You know that’s impossible right, if you saw a Hellhound then it’s impossible to hide from their sense of smell," Mika said, doubtful of Rem’s words.

Rem sighed while preparing his pillow.

"I doused myself in the blood of a dead Hellhound and hid away from their sense of smell, in an area most smelly – I’m not an idiot to think I could defeat them," Rem said and rested his head on the pillow.

"I thought boys didn’t admit that they were hiding cowards," Mika said with a little bit of surprise.

"And I thought boys liked to survive," Rem shot back while pointing to the door, "You’re disturbing me,"

Mika nodded silently and walked out the room, reaching for the door knob, opening the door quickly.

"Rest well," She muttered quietly and the door clicked, closing behind her as soon as she stepped out.

Once she had left, Rem got off the bed and to his closet – grabbing his black tracksuit and putting it over his clothes in an instant.

#####

During the briefing of the entire place on the first day, Instructor Martinez had told of a room which could be used to improve and hone their physical abilities – Rem was curious about it, besides it wasn’t like the room was restricted or anything, it was open and free for use at all times.

As Rem stepped into the room, he witnessed Cole – his face as steady as ever as he threw punches toward a punching bag, although it wasn’t a regular punching bag... it was one enforced by Magic steel.

His knuckles were bloody and his punches weren’t getting through but Cole persisted, each punch sending a resounding crunch through his fists.

’I have to go stronger,’ Cole thought as he remembered the mocking smile Cynthia had on her face – he wanted to make sure that she acknowledged him, during his battle with Tobi, something within him had snapped and more power followed along with it... if he could stimulate that feeling again, he could grow stronger.

Cole’s eyes suddenly snapped to the right as he noticed Rem, staring silently at his figure before walking to the side – going to a single item that looked like dumbbells on the ground

’These actually look heavy,’ Rem thought, he would use the System to analyze the properties but that would take the fun out of it... Rem grabbed it up with a single hand and raised it a bit, throwing the dumbbell aside a moment later.

This was what he had expected after all, what if they weren’t up to the standard? What if he had gained stats that had passed all of them? What if this was a waste of time?

Well, he began to try the rest of them nevertheless.
