Chapter 228: A Humbling Experience

The forest stretched endlessly ahead, the dappled sunlight casting shifting patterns on the leaf-strewn ground.

Rem led the group with a calm, steady pace, his sharp eyes scanning their surroundings for any sign of danger. Behind him, Luke and Kiara walked in silence, their footsteps soft but eager.

It wasn’t long before they stumbled across something unexpected.

"Master, stop," Luke called, his voice tinged with curiosity.

Rem halted, turning to look at the boy. Luke was pointing to a faint glow a few yards ahead, partially obscured by the underbrush. Rem followed his gaze and frowned.

They approached cautiously, pushing aside the foliage to reveal a portal shimmering in full glory.

The structure radiated an ethereal blue light, its intricate carvings glowing faintly.

"A dungeon gate," Kiara whispered, her voice filled with awe.

Rem sighed, stepping closer to examine it. The glow and markings indicated a C-grade dungeon. It wasn’t the highest level of danger, but it wasn’t a walk in the park either. 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶

"We should keep moving," he said firmly. "Dungeons aren’t something you just waltz into for fun."

"But Master!" Luke protested, stepping forward. "This is a C-grade! It’s not that bad, right? I mean, I’ve fought plenty of monsters outside. How different can it be?"

Rem shot him a sharp look. "Different enough that people die in dungeons all the time. Even experienced raiders."

Luke clenched his fists, his expression determined. "But I need this. I need the experience. You’ve been training me and Kiara to handle ourselves, and this is the perfect chance to prove we’re ready."

Kiara glanced nervously between them but said nothing. She trusted Rem’s judgment, but she also understood Luke’s desire to grow stronger.

Rem rubbed his temple, his expression unreadable.

He looked at the gate again, the faint hum of energy vibrating in the air around it. Entering a dungeon with the kids... it wasn’t something that he wanted to do right now, especially since they were on the move. His bounty was bound to increase anytime soon/

"Luke," he said slowly, his tone measured. "Do you understand what you’re asking? Once we step inside, there’s no turning back until we clear it and find the exit gate. Dungeons are unpredictable. The monsters are stronger, the terrain is harsher, and the risks are real."

"I understand," Luke said firmly. "But if I’m ever going to get better, I need to face real challenges. Please, Rem."

Rem studied the boy’s face for a long moment, searching for any sign of hesitation. Finally, he sighed.

"Fine," he said. "But you stay close, and you listen to everything I say. No heroics, no rushing ahead. Got it?"

Luke’s face lit up with excitement. "Got it!"

Kiara groaned softly. "I guess we’re doing this."

With a resigned nod, Rem approached the gate. He reached out, his hand brushing against the glowing surface.

The energy rippled under his touch, and the gate began to hum louder, the light intensifying.

"Stay together," Rem instructed, his voice firm. "And stay alert."

As the gate opened, a wave of cool air rushed out, carrying with it the scent of damp stone and earth. The three of them stepped inside, and the forest disappeared behind them.

The dungeon was dark and oppressive, the walls of the tunnel lined with jagged stones that seemed to pulse faintly with light.

The air was thick and heavy, amplifying the sound of their footsteps.

Luke’s excitement hadn’t dimmed, though. His eyes sparkled as he looked around, taking in the eerie beauty of the dungeon.

"This is amazing," he whispered.

Rem, however, was less impressed. His eyes flicked around the space, his senses on high alert. Dungeons were never as empty as they seemed.

"Focus, Luke," he said. "You’re not here to sightsee."

Luke nodded quickly, gripping his blade.

It wasn’t long before they encountered their first obstacle. A pack of lizard-like monsters skittered out from the shadows, their eyes glowing with malevolence.

They were larger than the wolves Luke had hunted earlier, their scales shimmering with a dull, metallic sheen.

"Cave Lizards," Rem muttered. "Stay back. Let me — "

"I can handle it!" Luke interrupted, stepping forward.

"Luke!" Kiara hissed, but he was already moving.

Channeling his soul energy, Luke surged forward, his blade slicing through the air. The first lizard lunged at him, and he dodged smoothly, his strike landing cleanly across its side.

It let out a guttural screech before collapsing.

Luke grinned, adrenaline coursing through him. "See? I’ve got this!"

But his confidence was short-lived.

Another lizard pounced, and though Luke managed to deflect its claws, the sheer force of the attack sent him stumbling back. Before he could recover, two more charged at him.

Rem was there in an instant, his movements a blur as he intercepted the monsters. With a single, precise strike, he dispatched them both, the sound of steel meeting flesh echoing in the tunnel.

"Luke!" Rem barked, his tone sharp. "I told you to stay close!"

Luke swallowed hard, his earlier excitement replaced by a creeping sense of unease. The lizards weren’t just stronger than the monsters outside — they were faster, more coordinated.

"Sorry," he muttered, retreating to stand by Kiara.

Rem didn’t say anything, but his expression was grim.

They continued deeper into the dungeon, the encounters growing more frequent and challenging. Each battle tested Luke and Kiara’s skills, forcing them to adapt to the unpredictable nature of the monsters.

For Luke, it was a humbling experience. The monsters within the dungeon weren’t just stronger — they were smarter. They moved with precision, their attacks calculated and relentless.

By the time they reached a small clearing within the dungeon, Luke was exhausted. He leaned against a wall, his breathing heavy.

"This is... way harder than I thought," he admitted.

"Dungeons aren’t playgrounds," Rem said, his tone softer now. "But you’re learning. That’s what matters."

Kiara handed Luke a water flask, her expression a mix of concern and exasperation. "You’re lucky Rem’s here, or we’d be monster food by now."

Luke managed a weak smile. "Yeah, I get that now."

Rem crouched near the center of the clearing, his eyes scanning their surroundings. "We’ll rest here for a bit, but stay alert. Dungeons have a way of surprising you when you least expect it."

As they settled down, Luke couldn’t help but reflect on what he’d learned so far. The excitement he’d felt earlier had been replaced by a newfound respect for the dangers of dungeon raiding.

And he was determined to keep learning, no matter how hard the journey became.
