The Monster Monarch System-Chapter 227: Morning Hunt
The early morning air was cool and crisp, carrying with it the earthy scent of dew-soaked leaves.
Luke sprinted through the forest, his breath coming in steady puffs, the sound of his footsteps muffled by the thick layer of moss underfoot.
The pale light of dawn barely broke through the dense canopy above, casting the woods in a muted twilight.
This was the perfect time to hunt.
Luke’s eyes darted from tree to tree, his senses sharp and attuned to the faintest rustle of leaves or snap of twigs.
He had volunteered for this task, wanting to prove himself. He wasn’t just a kid who needed protection anymore — he could contribute, and hunting was as good a way as any to show it.
The forest was alive with potential threats, from smaller creatures that posed no danger to predators that could easily turn the tables if he let his guard down.
But it wasn’t just survival that brought Luke out here; it was the challenge, the thrill of the hunt.
A faint growl to his left stopped him in his tracks.
Luke crouched low, steadying his breathing as his eyes scanned the brush. A few feet ahead, he spotted movement — a patch of fur shifting between the foliage.
His heart quickened as he recognized the shape of the creature. A wolf-like monster, its sleek, muscular body bristling with dark fur that shimmered faintly with soul energy.
Perfect.
Luke didn’t hesitate. Channeling his own soul energy, he let it flow to his legs, increasing his speed and agility as he burst forward.
The wolf monster barely had time to react before he closed the distance, his blade flashing in the dim light.
The first strike was clean, slicing through the creature’s side with precision. It howled in pain, turning to swipe at him with its claws, but Luke was already moving.
Ducking beneath the attack, he drove his blade upward into its chest, the force of the blow enhanced by a burst of energy that rippled through his arm.
The monster collapsed with a low growl, its body going still.
Luke stood over it, catching his breath. His adrenaline was high, but he didn’t have time to linger. The forest wasn’t a place to let your guard down — not even for a second.
He quickly scanned the area, his ears straining for any sign of more wolves. Monsters rarely traveled alone, and sure enough, the faint sound of snarls reached him from deeper in the woods.
Luke grinned, his confidence surging. "Let’s make this quick."
Two more wolf monsters emerged from the shadows, their glowing eyes fixed on him. They moved cautiously, circling him like predators testing their prey. Luke raised his blade, his stance steady.
When the first wolf lunged, Luke sidestepped with ease, driving his blade into its flank before spinning to meet the second one head-on.
This one was faster, more aggressive, but Luke was ready. He unleashed a burst of soul energy, propelling himself forward with blinding speed.
His blade slashed through the air, finding its mark as the wolf crumpled to the ground.
Within moments, it was over.
Luke exhaled, his muscles relaxing as he surveyed the scene. Three wolf monsters lay at his feet, their bodies intact and ready to be brought back to camp. He wiped the sweat from his brow, his lips curling into a satisfied smile.
"Not bad," he muttered to himself.
Using a length of rope from his pack, Luke tied the wolves together and slung them over his shoulder. The weight was considerable, but he welcomed the challenge.
It was proof of his success, a tangible reminder that he was getting stronger.
The walk back to camp was uneventful, the forest slowly coming alive with the sounds of morning.
Birds chirped in the distance, and the first rays of sunlight began to pierce through the canopy, casting golden beams across the forest floor.
When Luke finally emerged from the trees, the sight of their small campsite greeted him. The fire pit was still smoldering from the night before, and Kiara was seated nearby, rubbing the sleep from her eyes. 𝒻𝑟𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝑛𝘰𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝘤𝘰𝘮
Rem, as always, was already awake, standing with his arms crossed as he surveyed their surroundings.
"Back already?" Rem called, a hint of amusement in his tone. "I thought you’d take longer."
Luke smirked, dropping the wolves to the ground with a heavy thud. "I work fast."
Kiara’s eyes widened as she took in the haul. "You caught all of those?"
"Of course," Luke replied, puffing out his chest. "Piece of cake."
Rem knelt down, inspecting the wolves with a practiced eye. "Not bad," he said, nodding in approval. "These’ll make a good breakfast."
Luke’s grin widened at the praise, but it was short-lived as Rem turned to him with a serious expression.
"Next time, though, make sure you’re not followed," Rem said. "You did check, didn’t you?"
Luke hesitated, his confidence faltering. "I... I didn’t see anything out there."
Rem sighed, rising to his feet. "You’re getting better, but you’re not invincible. Always double-check."
Luke nodded, feeling a twinge of embarrassment. "Got it."
Rem’s expression softened, and he clapped a hand on Luke’s shoulder. "Still, good work. Now, let’s get these cleaned up."
With practiced efficiency, Rem set to work preparing the wolves. He skinned them with ease, his movements precise and deliberate.
Luke and Kiara watched, eager to learn as he explained the process.
"Monsters like these are a good source of meat," Rem said, slicing into one of the wolves. "Their energy-infused bodies make for a hearty meal. Just make sure you drain the energy properly before cooking, or it’ll overwhelm your system."
Once the meat was prepared, Rem seasoned it with a mix of spices from his pack.
The aroma was mouthwatering, and even Kiara, who usually hated mornings, seemed more awake as the smell of cooking meat filled the air.
The three of them sat around the fire as the meal cooked, their stomachs growling in anticipation.
"Think we’ll reach the city today?" Kiara asked, her voice hopeful.
Rem shook his head. "Not quite. We’ve still got a ways to go, but we’ll get there soon enough."
Luke leaned back, staring up at the sky as the sun climbed higher. "I just hope we don’t run into any more trouble on the way."
Rem chuckled, his gaze flicking toward the forest. "Trouble has a way of finding us, whether we like it or not."
Breakfast was ready soon after, and the three of them dug in with enthusiasm. The meat was tender and flavorful, the perfect fuel for the journey ahead.
As they ate, Luke couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride.
He had brought back the food they were eating, proved his worth to the group. And though Rem’s reminder about caution still lingered in his mind, he knew he was improving.
They were a team, each of them playing their part. And together, they would face whatever came their way.
