The Monster Monarch System-Chapter 198: The Changing Ruins (Part 2)
It took two days for Rem to traverse the mountain path and arrive at the Changing Ruins, even with his speed – the mountain path was winding and long. And he decided to hold back a bit, if he arrived a little too quick, it would raise suspicions.
As Rem arrived at the Changing Ruins, he could see the irregularity of soul energy in the air... it was stranger than anything he had sensed before.
’I haven’t seen something as complicated as this before,’ Rem thought with a frown, he was standing outside the entrance of the ruins but the soul energy coming out of it felt erratic... almost as if something was controlling it from the inside, ’Is there a unique kind of Monster here?’
Rem shoved those thoughts aside for now and focused on the mission at hand, he narrowed his eyes at his side – he could perceive a person standing a little bit away from him, he didn’t even need to see their soul energy to know that.
"I’m surprised you were able to see through my stealth skill," A Feminine voice said as the soul energy cloaking her body receded, Rem sighted the beautiful woman with pink hair and golden eyes... she was clad in light armor and had a sword poised over her shoulder, her gaze was cold but it softened soon after, "You’re the one that the Mayor said he was going to be sending to assist us?" 𝑓𝘳𝑒𝑒𝓌𝘦𝘣𝘯ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝑚
"Yes," Rem said.
The woman turned to the entrance of the ruins and frowned.
"I was tasked to wait for you and I must say you’re a few days early," She said but Rem shrugged, "My name is Amelia and it’ll be a pleasure working with you,"
"I’m Rem," Rem replied and they both walked toward the entrance, "Could you give me a little more briefing about what this mission is about?"
"Glad you asked," Amelia said and they both stepped through the entrance, there was nothing strange about the opening but the soul energy that Rem had sensed earlier grew even stronger, "Our mission here is to neutralize the dungeon gates that are here in the ruins, there are a lot but most of them have had dungeon breaks already so the monsters are flooding outside, we can encounter any monster at any given time so always be on guard,"
Rem didn’t need to be told twice, ’The Changing Ruins’ was even more complicated than the B-grade dungeon he had been in just a year ago and his guard needed to be up at all times.
"There are a few monsters coming our way," Amelia noticed, pulling out her blade – Rem had already known this but he was genuinely surprised by her sensory abilities, "It’s pretty hard to sense monsters with the dense soul energy lingering in the air but I can at least pick up traces of them,"
And like she had said, several monsters walked up to them – they were Deathwolves but Rem could see obvious differences at a glance. Their eyes took on a strange golden glow, something Deathwolves that Rem was familiar with hadn’t done before and they blurred forward, their bodies moving with immense speed.
"The Monsters in the Changing Ruins are a lot more powerful than regular Monsters so be careful," Amelia said while brandishing her blade, pink soul energy surging impeccably around it’s figure as she moved to battle.
Rem took in a deep breath.
’There’s something seriously wrong with this place,’ Rem thought while taking out his Shortsword, his crimson soul energy engulfing the sword. Rem pushed off the ground and met a Deathwolf mid-air, the steel of his blade and the claws of the Monster clashed as sparks were generated.
There were only five Deathwolves which was something the duo could handle despite their enhanced power, Rem looked over to Amelia who was handling herself well despite being confronted by two monsters at the same time.
Rem pushed back the Deathwolf and decapitated it in an instant with a single slash, packed with soul energy. As he landed on the ground, he channeled soul energy into his feet and pushed toward the other two in the distance.
They growled, as if warning him to not come closer but Rem appeared beside one of them, unfazed by the warning. He dug his Shortsword into the head of the Deathwolf and slammed it into the ground, his crimson gaze landing on the other one.
The aura around him had changed, the gravity of the situation was much more different from what he had expected when he got to the Changing Ruins... it was clear that there was something sinister going on here and he was now involved in it.
Rem dealt with the other monster just as quickly, after he did that, he placed his Shortsword in it’s sheath and turned to Amelia – her light armor had several splashes of crimson blood on it, evidence of the battle she had just been in.
"You’re skilled," Amelia commented as she tucked in her own sword into its sheath, "But that’s to be expected from someone with soul energy as powerful as yours,"
Rem could see that she wasn’t a sensor like Mika, that much was obvious but she also had the ability to sense soul signatures, even though it was for a significantly shorter distance.
"You’re quite strong as well," Rem said and Amelia shrugged.
"If you think this is strong then you need to see the Main squad," Amelia said, "Captain Cecilia is far stronger than me and she has a whole lot more soul energy reserves,"
Rem’s eyes trailed off, he looked around the ruins – it looked like a regular cave but Rem knew that this was an old mine.
’I wonder what they were mining,’ Rem thought as he suddenly felt the soul energy in the air wrap around the both of them.
"What’s happening?" Rem asked and Amelia’s eyes widened in terror.
"The Chang-"
Both Cavaliers vanished, the entrance in the distance warped away as well... the Changing Ruins had begun changing.
