The Monster Monarch System-Chapter 155: The Glacian’s Territory (Part 6)
Both Apprentices sat on the rocky ground, stretching their arms forward and warming themselves with a fire that Rem had conjured upon some dry wood they had found – fatigued by the battles that they were faced with, the duo decided to rest here today.
"There is something surprising," Tero said, "You’re a fire mage yet you don’t behave like one,"
Rem raised an eyebrow questioningly and Tero continued.
"Mages which have awakened the fire affinity are usually hot-headed," Tero said, "They rush into battles, they love the feeling of battle within their veins – they harbor a desire to grow stronger than ever but Rem, you don’t act like one,"
Then Tero looked at Rem, his gray eyes focusing intensely on the flames that kept them warm in the chilly cave – the more they navigated through the caverns, the more colder it got.
"I’m different," Rem said, "I grew up in situations regular people can’t survive in for many years, so containing my inner emotions isn’t much to do,"
In truth, Rem didn’t have such tendencies...
"I see," Tero said, "My childhood was somewhat disastrous as well,"
Tero took a deep breath, inhaling the cold breath into his lungs as he prepared to tell a tale – this was of course to pass the time, Tero didn’t see any harm in telling someone who he had been fighting alongside with in a Life-or-death battle a little more about himself.
"Orion Town, a massive town full to the brink with Cavaliers," Tero said, "That’s what you probably thought upon setting eyes on the town – Sure we have a few Magus but most of them are appointed to the forest of death, keeping up with the appearance of new dungeons, the only ones the town can afford to keep within are the Channelers, Magus granted with the abilities to peer at the souls of individuals, although they have a few attacking spells, their combat power cannot be compared to that of other Magus,"
Rem listened to Tero’s words, feeling the meaning behind every single one he spoke.
"But within this united setting lays politics and other complicated matters," Tero said, "The Mayor is the most powerful figure in the vast region, his strength standing at the unrivaled S-grade but he’s a retired Cavalier, Sure if there’s any high-level threats like A-grade – he raids it but that doesn’t change the fact that he’s retired so his power has substantially weakened,"
"There are mansions – you’re from one, the Amber mansion if I remember correctly," Tero said, "All of the Apprentices that came on this raid are from different mansions, only official mansions accepted by the Mayor are allowed to train Apprentices,"
Rem was surprised but he kept his surprise to himself, he never knew the mansion he came from was called Amber Mansion, neither did he know the Mayor was controlling the number of Apprentices...
"There are two reasons for pushing the Apprentices, us into this B-grade dungeon – the first one was to unlock the dormant potential within each and every one of us, everyone was brought here because they had something that intrigued the Mayor... a hidden skill? a hidden power? Who knows what the mayor sees in people but despite his strength decreasing, his eyes are still as sharp as ever," Tero said and took a deep breath, "The second one... to weed out the strong from the weak, Orion town needs strong Apprentices to become Cavaliers that will be able to fight against the Monsters in the Forest of death, mutations and the ones that exist within the dungeon, even if one has hidden potential? What’s the use of it if they can’t bring it out?"
Tero threw an enquiring gaze at Rem, waiting for an answer.
"They aren’t of any use," Rem replied while Tero nodded.
"Exactly, they don’t have any use," Tero said, "And that’s what this is, a chance to dispose of the weak-willed ones that have no potential of surviving while keeping the strong ones,"
’It’s not much of a bad idea,’ Rem thought, the Mayor didn’t have to get his hands dirty and he had sent his own daughter down – confident in her abilities to survive.
Rem pulled closer to the crackling fire, his legs crossed over each other.
"Where would they get the chance of separating us like that?" Rem asked.
"The Elite attacking force led by Captain Yokama – they’re an expert in their field, disappearing from the Apprentices is an easy task for them," Tero said, "The monster that sucked us to different parts of the dungeon just made their job easy or is it normal that a professional rescue team like Captain Yokama and his party won’t be able to scout out the positions,"
Rem also thought about it, the more he remembered the words – the more his eyes widened, confusion spiking within his being.
"Aren’t you from one of the mansions?" Rem asked.
"Yes as a matter of fact, I was born in one," Tero replied with a small chuckle, "My training was far more different than any other Apprentice in my mansion,"
"Why?" Rem asked, he was curious about this although he already had the gist of it.
Tero pointed to his eyes, smirking pridefully.
"Ever since my birth, I’ve been more powerful than anyone my age," Tero said, "And that’s because of these eyes – these unique set of eyes are much different from regular eyes, and right from even Orion was created, they had been rare between my ancestors,"
"Just say I have the ability to see things that your eyes can’t see," Tero said, "Beyond human apprentices, there are much smaller lifeforms floating in the air – if I focus hard enough, I can see these molecules, they are what trigger my explosions – I just need to find a destructive molecule and channel my magic into it making it further unstable before it explodes, it’s pretty handy right?"
"Yeah, if you put it in that way," Rem said.
"Every heir or heiress of the Mansions in Orion town have something unique about them," Tero said, "Take Olivia for example,"
