Chapter 141: Nightroach Territory (Part 1)

Another week had rolled by quickly in the wake of the dungeon and Rem had moved a long way from where he had been – there were no demon fights so he could only fight and absorb the souls of regular monsters while slowly increasing his power.

He needed a lot of power to face the enemies that lay ahead of him, endangering his path and what gave better power than absorbing the souls of Monsters? The souls of the Hellhounds that he hunted served as a sufficient power-up but overtime, the effects of Hellhounds grew slim.

Rem stood outside the tent which had been situated within a cave, he had learned from his last mistake with the Demonic Medium and began hitching the tent within deep cave formations, after clearing them out of course... it made the chances of getting found out a whole lot slimmer.

Megan lay in the tent, hugging the air in front of her while snoring – Rem had been sleeping next to her for some time and she had wanted to get his warmth, she received it until Rem decided to step out of the tent and begin his search.

’I know it’s around here somewhere,’ Rem thought as his memories trailed back to the fourth demon, it had a unique energy to it but nothing Rem couldn’t recognize at a glance. He wanted to get his element of surprise in while he had the chance and scout a huge portion of the area he was now in, not only to find the Demon but to also get some areas for hunting.

Hunting was the only way to eat in the dungeon, life was survival of the fittest and the dungeon ensured that it showed it’s new inhabitants what it meant to survive – it was killed or be killed, if one wasn’t strong enough, the Monsters would kill them and feed on their bodies and if the Monsters weren’t strong enough, they would be killed and fed on.

It was a cycle that every survivor followed, even Captain Yokama’s group. Nobody wanted to stumble into the Boss’s room by mistake, given the state of discord that they were in right now – Yokama thought it best to attempt the Boss room when they had regrouped and seen how much was left of the Combat force... the mighty combat force that had stepped through the B-grade gate with purpose, he wanted to see how much they had been reduced to and if there was any chance raiding the Boss room seemed possible.

Rem took in a deep breath while focusing soul energy into the soles of his feet, this was a regular routine upon moving into a new area. He planned to remain here for another week and for that, he had to deal with the powerful monsters while leaving the weaker meaty Monsters like Hellhounds for hunting.

The Apprentice leapt into the air and onto a stone pillar.

’I’ll scout several kilometers around us,’ Rem thought while hanging off the stone pillar, ’If there are any powerful Monster territories nearby, I’ll kill them,’

With those thoughts in mind, Rem began jumping around.

#####

Rem landed on the top of a cave formation and looked inside, it looked dark and empty but the soul signatures Rem sensed from it betrayed the darkness. It was clear that the cave was meant to lure unsuspecting prey.

’The monsters inside are much more powerful than the Blood scorpions,’ Rem thought as he jumped down from the top and entered the dark cave. The further he moved into the cave, the more he felt the darkness swallow him whole...

Rem raised his right palm up, lighting a flame. The flame crackled as it raged on Rem’s palm, the Apprentice looked around and sighed.

’Bugs,’ He thought with disgust.

The monsters staring at him were like nightmarish versions of cockroaches, but on a much larger scale. Their crimson eyes glowed faintly, casting a grim, reddish light that barely pierced the darkness of the room. Their tough, black armored bodies clung to the walls with unsettling ease, as if they were part of the very structure. Standing a meter tall, their sharp, claw-like feet dug into the surface, anchoring them in place with a menacing precision.

’Nightroach, C-rank’

Their cries echoed around the dungeon room and annoyed Rem who didn’t waste any time, summoning several orbs of flames behind him.

"I hate bugs," He muttered while the fireballs shot through the air, colliding with each and every one of the Nightroaches in the room – they emerged from the crimson flames, their bodies unharmed from the onslaught of flames.

The closest Nightroach screeched at him and leapt off the wall, the armor at its back parting and revealing a large set of wings. It soared through the air toward Rem who stood unmoving.

Despite the back of the Nightroaches having such heavy protective armor, their underbodies had no such armor and therefore Rem found this one vulnerable. He raised his left palm and blasted the Nightroach with crimson flames once again.

The Monster let out a painful screech as it was soon incinerated into nothing but the armor that slammed into the ground, creating a small crater. The other Nightroaches trembled, remaining bolted to the walls.

As long as their armor was the only thing Rem could blast, they were relatively safe. Rem had other ideas though... he looked at the Nightroach on the wall near him, the Monster’s crimson eyes let off a slight glow and without hesitation, Rem blasted the eyes of the Monster.

The painful screech echoed around the room, leaving the other Monsters in a daze. The Nightroach that had been attacked fell to the ground, exposing it’s underbody to Rem who incinerated it completely.

’Although their armor is able to resist the effect of flames,’ Rem thought, ’They have an obvious downside – wonder what kind of skill they can give me?’

A tab floated in front of him and Rem tapped it, absorbing the souls of the Monsters that he had just killed only for his eyes to widen.

"Very useful," Rem muttered as he raised both hands up, conjuring crimson flames – the sounds of terrorized Nightroaches followed as Rem experimented the ways to kill them.
