Chapter 140: A Peaceful Day

"Rem,"

"Yes?"

"Aren’t we going to find Captain Yokama or the rest of the party?" Megan asked as they sat in the warmth of the tent, her head was on his lap and he stroked her hair aimlessly – of course he was just honoring her request.

"We will," Rem said, "I’m sure we’ll find them one of these days, although I’m not sure there’ll be anything left of the formerly strong party,"

"Why do you say so?" Megan asked, looking at his gray eyes.

Rem didn’t want to say that there were several demons lurking in the shadows and that he believed Captain Yokama as well as the others wouldn’t stand a chance against them.

"The dungeon... the monsters in this dungeon are really strong, aren’t they?" Rem asked and she nodded.

"Very strong," Megan replied to his question, "And they attack us so randomly,"

"Yes, the rest of us were separated – I don’t even know how the other Apprentices are faring in the dungeon," Rem said, trying to fake as much worry as possible.

Honestly he didn’t care how the other Apprentices were doing although he was sure that they would survive, at least most of them would.

"But if they’re lucky, Captain Yokama as well as the others will be able to survive," Rem said, "If they aren’t, we have each other,"

Megan’s cheeks turned bright red as she contemplated Rem’s words.

’We have... each other,’ Megan thought, her mind whirring as the possibilities. Steam floated out her ears and her feelings were only intensified by his constant caressing.

Rem stared at the side of the tent, his Shortsword lay at the corner and it seemingly called to him. He was reminded that there were still two demons out there and he needed to kill them as quickly as possible, their thriving existences only endangered his life by the second.

He soon sighed.

’I don’t know what kind of abilities they have,’ Rem thought, ’But I do know that both of them are the strongest out of the five, especially the one that attacked me after I killed Aegi,’

If he had remained there after finishing off Aegi, he would have surely died... that tendril had sailed through the air at the speed it had taken him to glance at the System interface.

’But I’m stronger now, I’ve absorbed the demons and increased the power of my soul as well as my Magic,’ Rem thought, ’I should be able to defeat them,’

His eyes flashed as he let go of Megan, much to the girl’s protest.

"Where are you going?" Megan asked with worry in her eyes.

"We’ll have to eat, don’t we? I’m going to kill some Hellhounds," Rem replied while reaching for his Shortsword, "Just do me a favor and don’t leave the cave, if you don’t, when I get back, I’ll stroke your hair again,"

The worry in her eyes was replaced with determination as she gave a nod.

"Just come back safely," Megan said and Rem left the tent, she sighed and hugged herself for warmth, "Being in love is... hard,"

"I would have brought her along," Rem muttered as he perched on a rock pillar, "But she doesn’t have any use in combat, she’s a healer after all,"

The tent had been set deep in an empty cave, which resulted in the slight cold but it was nothing she couldn’t handle for some minutes.

’Hellhounds are one of the only sources of meat in this dungeon,’ Rem thought as he observed a pack of them beneath him, ’Death wolves are rare to encounter,’

There were a lot of Hellhounds and their meat was not only sweet but it gave the person eating it energy. Rem held his Shortsword while pouring soul energy into the blade, engulfing the black blade in a green flame of power and without wasting a breath, Rem jumped off the pillar and onto the back of a Hellhound.

With a single slash, Rem cut the Hellhound in half and flipped in the air, his feet pressing against the sides of the pillar as he shot through the air and slashed a Hellhound’s head off with the help of his accumulated momentum.

Rem spun in the air, there were only six of them in this pack and he had already dealt with the two powerful Hellhounds with relative ease. The others witnessed his strength in action and made a wise decision, they fled.

Rem didn’t give chase, these two had enough meat to last them the entire day.

The Apprentice reached into his inventory, pulling out a big bowl and then he began skinning the Hellhounds before cutting off the meat – he created slime clones to assist himself and the whole process was hastened.

Megan found herself bored in the tent, rolling around while waiting for Rem’s voice... she trusted that he wouldn’t be hurt during hunting, Hellhounds were well within his range of killing but she couldn’t help but feel worried.

"It’s been like thirty minutes already, he should already be done hunting," Megan muttered to herself while looking around in the tent, finding her Magus cloak... even though she had been strictly told not to leave, her worries overpowered any other feeling and she soon raced out of the cave.

"I’m not stroking your hair," Rem said emotionlessly as he watched her pass by him, he was sitting next to the cave – roasting the meat over the heat of crimson flames, "You didn’t listen to me,"

Megan pouted cutely as she hugged herself again.

"I was feeling cold and worried about you," Megan said, "You’ve been gone for over thirty minutes,"

"Not even those big monsters that attacked us that day I left you in the tent could kill me," Rem said while flipping over the meat in the flames, "And you think Hellhounds could?"

Megan didn’t say anything although she could feel the disappointment in his voice, he soon threw her a can and she caught it.

"I found water," Rem said, "And don’t worry about purity, it’s already been boiled many times over,"

Megan nodded thankfully while opening the lid of the can and drinking down the contents, making sure to remain some for Rem as well.

’This is how a regular day in the dungeon is,’ Rem thought, slowly but surely getting used to the peace that these days brought.
