The Monster Monarch System-Chapter 122: Monsters In White (Part 1)
*Slash*
Rem slashed a Spider Beetle for the umpteenth time upon entering the territory, his blade split the monster in half and left it’s corpse splattering on the ground. The opening of the Spider’s territory had been similar to a Cavern opening and it had led the party through a network of rocky paths, the party was yet to find the treasures that they were searching for.
’Seems like they won’t be that easy to find as I thought,’ Rem thought.
The more intelligent a Monster was, the more enlightened their treasures would be but it wasn’t only about that, the harder it was to find it. If Rem had anything of value, he’d instantly stuff it in his Inventory since nobody would be able to find it from there but the same couldn’t be said for Monsters which had no access to the inventory – they needed to hide their treasures from the eyes of prying raiders or even fellow monsters, and for this reason, their intellect comes in handy.
There were different routes in this cave and the Channelers would have been excellent for sensing the true path ahead but they were dead, in the end, Yokama had to split the group into two to embark through the two different openings in the Cave and it seemed that this opening was infested with Spider beetles.
They were being led by the Vice captain of the entire squad and the Cavalier was surely one of the most powerful people in the Party – after walking for a few more minutes, the group found themselves at the entrance of a room, the entrance covered in thick webs that Rem suspected would be hard to even cut through. Their party only had the four members of the defensive force, the Vice captain and the Apprentices. It wasn’t too strong but there wasn’t anything too strong appearing after the Boss of this place had been killed.
"Stand back," The Vice Captain said as she took a step back, a golden gleam of light flashing as soul energy enveloped her sword with practiced ease, the golden soul energy sent shockwaves around the room – making the clothes of the Apprentices flail as their hair kept blowing in the forceful wind.
’Her soul,’ Rem’s eyes gleamed, ’It’s powerful,’
Something vibrated within him, and he was well aware of the nudges that the title [Soul Hunter] gave him – he wanted the soul but he quickly ignored the slight nudge, if he stole her soul right here and now, he would become an enemy to the entire party, he couldn’t risk his future for something so minor.
The Vice captain thrusted her blade at the door full of webs, ravaging past the webs with the intensity of her soul energy. Soon the entrance of the cavern that was once filled with webs was instantly blown open, the soul energy around the blade vanished as the Vice captain tucked it in her sheath and began walking through the opening.
The walls in the room were adorned in beautiful webs, each web representing a design – It was dimly lit and even the ceiling was wrapped with webs, the Vice Captain gathered soul energy in her palm and brightened the room up, there was indeed a pile of treasures although there was one problem, several humans surrounded the treasures – their bodies engulfed in white garments which covered their heads as well.
When Rem focused on their souls, his pupils shrunk – the weakest one here had a massive amount of Soul energy, the strength of his soul energy was similar to Captain Yokama... a truly valuable feat and if that wasn’t enough, each of them was capable of using magical energy.
Rem glanced at the Vice-captain and it seemed that she had realized that as well, yet she held the hilt of her sword still tucked in it’s sheath as a golden glint surrounded her eyes.
"Step away," She said menacingly, there wasn’t supposed to be anybody else in this dungeon as they were the only party to have entered – even if another entered after them, it was impossible for them to progress so fast unless it was a group of A-ranks.
One of the people in hoodies turned to her, his two long black horns visible. His face was obscured within the darkness of the cloak he wore over his head but they could still see his crimson eyes gleaming.
"Begone," He commanded in a low tone while releasing his magical energy, his magical energy reacted with their shadows and everyone in the room felt themselves being consumed by their shadows, teleporting them to different parts of the dungeon – well all except one person.
"Monster Monarch, did you really think we wouldn’t notice you?" He asked as all of them turned to him, their eyes glinting with malevolence – each and every one of their horns visible to Rem who swallowed a bit. His weapon was clutched in his palm and his gray eyes began to shine, enveloped with green flames.
He was silent, observing the energy of each and every one of his opponents while determining his chances of victory.
"Like I expected, he hasn’t reawakened yet and that means he’s an easy kill," One of the hooded figures said.
’Reawakening?’ Rem thought, the word sounded foreign. The System had said nothing of the sort.
"His soul energy is still weak," Another figure said, "Why don’t you go ahead and end him?"
The figure had suggested the idea to the one that had controlled the shadows and the figure nodded, taking a step forward and locking eyes with Rem. Rem could feel his presence as shadows protruded from his body and if anything, he knew that this battle would be unlike anything he had ever faced.
Rem entered a combat stance, his sword flowing with soul energy as he followed his Adversary’s movements, only for it to vanish into the shadows below. It emerged from Rem’s shadow and gave him a kick, sending him shooting across the room toward the Hooded figures who stood beside the treasure – crimson tendrils of magical energy protruded from the ground, impaling Rem at all sides...
