Chapter 53: Chapter 51: Let’s Watch the Meteor Shower Together!

"People nowadays really have issues."

While keeping an eye on Hilia during the fight, Rose couldn’t help but sigh again.

"Relying on Magic Puppets to store magic, skipping the whole learning process—when the puppets break down, they’re screwed. How is that any different from asking an AI for help with everything and never actually using your brain?"

But I have to admit, this thing does make it easy to learn magic quickly.

Give it a few more decades, and mages might not need to study magic at all; just leave it to the Magic Puppets—pull what you need from them when the time comes. And once you lose your puppet, no matter your tier, you’re basically just a regular person with a bit more muscle.

Still, Rose was only sighing—didn’t actually deny this method. It’s sort of like those doomsayers harping on about what you’ll do if you lose your phone, run out of battery, or have no signal. So far, it’s just needless worry.

After all, if your Magic Puppet—which is stronger than you—breaks, there’s no way you’d be safe and sound either.

"This girl is pretty sharp, already knows how to adapt and improvise."

Watching Hilia take down the enemy’s Magic Puppet with a combo like it was nothing, Rose smiled a little and, with a casual stroll, dismantled all the enemy puppets involved in the fight.

As for the puppet operators, Rose didn’t kill them—just knocked them out and drained all their magic power. These were Hilia’s spoils, after all; there’s a big difference between rewards for killing and capturing people alive.

Rose checked everyone’s puppets, shook his head, and murmured, "All artificial Divine Formats. Good—natural ones aren’t as common as I worried."

Maybe they just couldn’t afford them.

After scavenging a bit of slightly valuable material from the dismantled puppets, Rose took his time heading up to the platform.

Right then, Hilia was standing up there, staring at the eye of the Sea Siren enshrined before her.

It was a massive eyeball, easily as big as two fists put together.

The eye was radiating an intense, polluted magical power, making Hilia certain about one thing—most of the pollution magic power here was being emitted from this Sea Siren’s Eye.

"It’s way too intense—there’s no way I dare touch it..."

Hilia hesitated, then heard a sound. She turned her head and, delighted, saw her Magic Puppet approaching: "Mr. Rose, you’re here! The pollution in this Sea Siren’s Eye is too much for me; I can’t touch it."

Rose nodded. "That’s because of the runes the heretics carved onto the Sea Siren’s Eye. The eye itself isn’t polluted. They did this so, after summoning the Sea Successor White Whale, they can use the Sea Siren’s Eye to control it."

With that, Rose stepped forward, concentrated his spiritual power at his fingertip—turning it into a carving blade—and started inscribing runes onto the Sea Siren’s Eye.

"Let your teacher know. Have them come here. They’re in Deep Red Town right now."

"Oh, okay."

Hilia opened her bracelet but then put it down again. "We’re too deep in here; I can’t connect to the Star Spirit Network."

Rose tossed her a bracelet pulsing with pollution. "Use this."

Hilia took the bracelet, resisting the urge to purify it, activated it with magic power, and found—to her surprise—it was actually connected to the Star Spirit Network.

"So it even has a dedicated Star Spirit Network port?" Hilia said, amazed.

Rose didn’t reply; he was busy inscribing runes at lightning speed.

"The ones who escaped have already alerted others that we broke into the ritual hall. It won’t be long before their higher-ups show up. Get ready—we just need to hold out until your teacher arrives."

"Roger!"

Hilia quickly connected with Ms. Alina, told her everything, and shared her astral location coordinates.

"Don’t do anything stupid. We’ll be there soon." Ms. Alina replied, then hung up.

Hilia snuck a glance at Rose.

Heh—already did something stupid.

Call ended, Hilia was just wondering if she could be of any help when Rose suddenly said, "Now, put up ten layers of ice walls to shield us."

"Huh?"

"Just do as I say."

"O-okay."

Hilia didn’t ask more questions and started putting up ice walls, one on top of another.

After ten layers, Hilia could feel her magic power was just about tapped out.

Sigh, still can’t save magic power the way Mr. Rose can...

When she was done, Hilia asked, "Why are we stacking ice walls, anyway?"

"You’ll find out in a second."

Hilia had just gotten curious when a loud noise erupted from the ritual hall’s entrance.

Bang!

The entire main door was smashed from outside, and dozens of people burst inside. 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺

Not Alina.

It was people from the Deep Sea Mutual Aid Association.

They spotted Hilia and the Magic Puppet on the high platform and rushed over immediately.

"Put down the offering!"

"Damn it! Trying to steal the offering? Tired of living, huh?"

"Kill them!"

"..."

Without even looking up, Rose said flatly, "Twenty people charging in. Five Tier Two Mages, the rest are Tier One."

"I’ll try to hold them off," Hilia tried to hype herself up.

Except, she sort of lacked conviction.

After all the fighting, plus the magic power she’d burned controlling the Magic Puppet for Rose, she was just about out of juice. Her spiritual power was nearly drained, too—no way she could really fight now.

Not that it mattered. Even at her best, she couldn’t take on that many by herself...

"Don’t bother—you can’t win. Just do exactly as I say."

"Okay," Hilia instantly gave in.

Rose tossed over a scroll.

"Wrap this scroll up with ice spikes, aim for the center of the hall. Activate it right before throwing, and once it lands, tear it open with Mage’s Hand."

"Is this that Tier Four magic scroll—Meteor Fire Rain?" Hilia’s eyes went wide. "We’re really using this?"

"Yes, hurry up."

"Alright!"

Hilia decided to trust Rose and immediately understood why he’d told her to stack those ice walls in front of them earlier.

He’d planned to use this scroll the whole time.

Using a Tier Four scroll against a bunch of Tier One and Tier Two mages... that’s just overkill...

But right now, it was the only choice.

Doing exactly as Rose instructed and with precise control by Mage’s Hand, the ice spike successfully enveloped the magic scroll and shot toward the center of the ritual hall.

Bam—

The ice spike silently shattered, and under Hilia’s control, her spiritual power turned into two threads that tore open the falling scroll.

Terrifying magical power erupted from the scroll, Pandora’s box cracked open—the whole ritual hall was flooded with blazing firelight.

On the room’s domed ceiling, countless fireballs instantly formed, and in the blink of an eye, flew out in all directions like a meteor shower.

The blast covered the entire ritual hall!

Ten layers of ice walls rose over Hilia and Rose, shielding them from the flames raining down above.

Thankfully, their spot at the edge wasn’t at the heart of the blast—the spell’s area-of-effect fireballs were only Tier Two in strength individually, so ten ice walls barely held up.

The heretics who’d just charged straight to the center weren’t so lucky.

At ground zero, countless fireballs pummeled out like artillery, exploding again and again around and on their bodies!

In an instant, the crowd transformed from ferocious attackers to a chorus of terrified screams.

It didn’t take long for even the screams to fade away.

Once the spell ended and the hall dimmed, the only ones still standing atop the platform were the girl and the Magic Puppet. No other living thing was left standing.

The girl stared at the scorched, pitted ground, and at the ice wall whittled down to just a single layer, utterly dumbfounded.

"So—so terrifying."
